Congratulations, 2012 CGC Registry Award Winners

Posted on 7/13/2012

We would like to thank all of the participants in the CGC Registry, and congratulate everyone on their individual accomplishments in every set.

The CGC Registry has grown to over 35,000 registered sets in more than 2,600 set types. Requests for new set types continue to come in and we look forward to watching the progress made by collectors as new books are added each day.

Our Mission was to choose three sets each in six competitive categories — Best Golden Age, Best Silver Age, Best Bronze Age, Best Modern Age, Best Copper Age and Best Presented. Additionally we had the task of choosing one winner for Best Magazine set, three outstanding message board contributors and just one registry participant for Overall Achievement in Comics Collecting.

Our team of judges reviewed all of the top sets across every category in the Comics Registry and after much deliberation, selected the following winners. Congratulations to all!

CGC 2012 Award for Achievement in Comics Collecting

CGC is proud to award the 2012 Achievement in Collecting Comics to Tempus Fugitivus! Tempus Fugitivus took the Registry by storm this year! Although not a newcomer to the Registry, in a whirlwind of activity this year he quickly dominated point totals (currently ranked #1 with 3,403,713 points) and set rankings (31 first place rankings). His sets are primarily Gold and Silver Age comic and are some of the most stunning examples of vintage material. Congratulations Tempus Fugitivus!!! Tempus Fugitivus' homepage

Best Golden Age Sets

starman221   KILLER BAT'S - Batman #1-#100
Although this technically is the same set that won in 2008 it has gone through major overhauls with numerous additions and upgrades. It is practically a new set; a new set that blows away its predecessor. Please help starman221 fill the last 7 spots in the run!

cheetah   Planet Comics!
This is a beautiful collection of Planet Comics. A majority of these copies are in high grade, which are not easy to find and nearly every copy has stunning eye appeal. These Planets are out of this world!

TLong    Avon1shots
This is a fun and eclectic set full of many Spokane, Bethlehem and Church copies. This is a collector’s set in progress with some holes and some room to upgrade. It is such a neat collection of oddball books; we are excited to see it develop.

Best Silver Age Sets

Rosland   Solar Valley - Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom (1962)
An amazing set of hard to find in high grade books...all Pacific Coast copies! With the newer additions over the past year, it doesn't get any better than this.

clarkkentdds   Off to the Museum... - Superman #1-#423
With jaw dropping Superman books already in Golden Age in this set, the Silver Age run is the icing on the cake. Hard to find issues in 9.0 and better make this set a jaw dropper.

Peter in Portugal   Premiere Issues - Marvel Silver Age 1st Issues (1965-1969)
Peter in Portugal has managed to put together quite the set of Marvel 1st issues, and though there are some holes, most of the issues in this set are in an amazing 9.4 or better.

Best Bronze Age Sets

Rude Badger   ATLAS COMICS ALL NEW NO REPRINT - Atlas-Seaboard
Atlas/Seaboard, although it lasted a very short period of time during the Bronze Age of Comics, published many interesting books and attracted many of the well known names of the period to work for them. Though this publisher may be obscure to some today, this year a few of the characters returned to publication, published by Ardden Entertainment.

Rude Badger has been working on completing his Atlas/Seaboard set for many years and finally this year completed it. His registry set contains some of the highest graded examples of these books. He also has added a front and back cover scan of every book as well as a description of each. Rude Badger's dedication over the years to his Atlas-Seaboard registry set has been quite impressive and that is why he is the winner this year. Congratulations Rude Badger for finally completing your set and for being the winner of the Best in Age Set for Bronze Age Comics!

Ghost Town   Framed! - Marvel - Picture Frame Marvels - Complete Set
One of the more popular cover gimmicks of the Bronze Age by Marvel was the Picture Frame Cover. Ghost Town's collection of them is amazing containing 369 of the 388 needed to complete this set. He also has scans of every single book that he has added! This set every year just seems to improve and improve. It deserves its own picture frame.

vane0326   Curses! It's The Justice Society Of America. - Justice Society of America (Complete 1976-1999)
Earlier this year Vane0326 added to his Justice Society of America set a complete collection of All-Star Comics #58 through #74 all in 9.8 condition. The Justice Society of America, loved by many during the Golden Age of comics, received a resurgence of popularity during the Bronze Age with the return to publication of All-Star Comics which quit publishing in the early 1950s. Vane0326's registry set also includes many other Bronze Age appearances of the JSA in high grade! Very Impressive!

Best Copper Age Sets

worldsbestcomics   Still The Best At What He Does - Wolverine (1988)
worldsbestcomics is the best there is at what he does, and what he does is put together an incredible run of Wolverine's 1988 series! Including 14 books in 9.9 condition, this set includes books like the recalled #131 (in 9.8), the Nabisco variant #145 (in 9.8) and the 2nd printing of #41 & #42 (in 9.8), along with images for almost every book. Now if he could just get #35 in 9.8, he'd be the talk of the town!

mschmidt   m's sandman - Sandman (1989)
mschmidt obviously spent much time, care and effort putting together his set of Sandman from DC's Vertigo line! A collection that other fans can only dream of, this set has every regular issue from #1-75 in 9.8, including such rarities as the error versions of #18 and #19! Helping this set stand out is the image and description that every single book has. Well done!

Tnerb   My First Comics - New Mutants (1983)
An 80s staple, New Mutants was a fan-favorite that gave the mutants of Marvel their first series outside of Uncanny X-Men. Tnerb starts his set off with a bang with #1 in 9.9! From there, every issue up to #100 (except for one) he has in 9.8 condition. His descriptions for all the books are also worth reading, and often made me chuckle!

Best Modern Age Sets

dhurley1125   Jersey Walking - Walking Dead (2003 Complete with Variants)
Walking Dead is one of the most popular modern comics out right now. The prices for key issues keep rising, which is the reason dhurley’s complete run including second printings and variants is very impressive. This set even has 9.8 copies of the books Walking Dead was previewed in before its 1st issue hit the stands. Combined with images and descriptions for each book makes this a great example for people looking to create a winning set.

Raphael Loh   The Best Run In Years - Captain America (2005)
Raphael Loh has put together an excellent run of this recent Captain America series. All of the books are high grade and are complete with images and descriptions. This story has gone through numbering changes and one shot comics which could get a little complicated. It shows a level of determination and follow through that would make Steve Rogers proud.

RecalledComics.com   Nude Microwave Scandal - Recalled Editions
Recalledcomics.com is great website for anyone looking to find out more about recalled books from the modern era. It now also has a great registry set of all 9.8 copies of the well known recalled books. This is no easy task to complete. From the mundane Phonogram: The Singles #5 printed with the wrong bar code to the scandals such as Wolverine saying a racial slur, they are all represented in this set.

Best Presented Sets

Professor Pecora   Against All Odds! - Wolverine (1988)
While many comic enthusiasts like the character Wolverine, the Professor shows his passion for this character through the use of his set introduction and slot descriptions. Using both front and back scans for each book we are able to truly appreciate his collection while the descriptions give a brief overview of what to expect in each issue.

Crazy Canuck   The Zenn-La Collection - Silver Surfer (Silver Age)
The detailed descriptions and extensive pedigree selection of this collection really make it eye-catching! Including information about both the pedigrees and the issues, this set appeals to a variety of collectors and interests. The completeness of this set demonstrates the owner’s commitment to this series.

GAM   Seduction Productions - Seduction of the Innocent Comics
Since the creation of the Comics Code Authority there has not been a better presentation of the books from Frederick Wertham’s Seduction of the Innocent. This user really shows his enthusiasm for this topic with the descriptions of why each book was included and also an image in the #2 spot showing the “offensive” material from each comic listed. His hard work researching this topic is evident with this set.

Best Magazine Set

Shauer   First 11 Playboy Magazines:"Dressed to the Nines" - Playboy Volume 1
There’s not much one can say about this set that it doesn’t already say for itself. A beautiful group of Playboys from the inaugural run, all with white pages and not one below 9.2! The first issue in this set has been designated a 9.4 and features a well rendered signature from Hugh Hefner himself! And with three issues in 9.6 and both the July & August 1954 issues at 9.8, this set leaves little room for improvement. A very impressive collection of books that are closing in on the 60 year mark!
