“The start of convention season for CGC has been better than ever!,” comments Steve Borock, CGC President and Primary Grader. “At Wizard World L.A., Paul Litch and Shawn Caffrey, along with their Modern tier grading and encapsulation team, worked non-stop all weekend to certify an on-site record breaker of over 2,700 modern comic books. A surprising 40% of those books were submitted for the prestigious CGC Signature Series label, showing that in the past year alone, more and more collectors appreciate the fact that the signatures they are collecting are authentic. All CGC Signature Series certified comic books are signed in the presence of a CGC authorized witness.
“The Emerald City Comic Con was amazing as well! Jim puts on an incredible fan-friendly show and we amazingly quadrupled our submissions from last year,” says Steve Borock. CGC held a signing at their booth with Ed Brubaker, writer of Captain America, Criminal, Uncanny X-Men, Immortal Iron Fist, and Daredevil, giving many fans a chance to get their books signed by him and submitted at the booth for the CGC Signature Series label. “He and his wife were so fan-friendly. Ed loves reading comics as much as I do, and that says a lot!” says Borock.
The CGC forum dinner in Seattle had less “forumites” than usual, but the quality of collectors with an amazing knowledge of comic books and a love for our hobby in a private dining room at McComick & Schmick's was an unforgettable event! “There was Greg Loey, Steve Nelsen, and Ray Castle, wonderful guys from the CGC boards, super collectors; Dave King, Steve Bailick, Dave Melvin, Ron Murry, Steve Sibra and his lovely wife Stacey, as well as such great comic sellers as Harley Yee (Harley Yee Comics), Terry O'Neil (Terry's Comics), and Steve Wyatt (Super-Con). Sitting next to me was System of the Down drummer John Dolmayan. John loves comics as much as he loves music! It is always a pleasure to hang out with him,” adds Borock.
And next was the NY City ComicCon, which left Steve Borock with much to talk about. “The CGC forum dinner was a little different than usual, as we were spread out at different tables around the restaurant, so if you wanted to talk to other hobbyists, you had to get up from the table you were sitting at and sit at their table for a bit. The legendary Frank Brunner showed up to the forum dinner and was, as usual, just a great person to talk comics and just about anything else. All in all, it was a great night with about 40 people there. Our biggest surprise, though, was that usually our largest submissions come from San Diego ComicCon, but in NYC, we took in more submissions than any show we have ever done!”
Steve adds, “Our crew worked non-stop all weekend! I talked to so many collectors over three days that when I returned to Florida, it took me a full day to get my voice back! This show could become the East Coast equivalent to San Diego ComiCon and I sure hope it does!”
