Comicpedigrees.com Announces the 45 Pedigreed Golden Age Collections for Upcoming Book
This week, Comicpedigrees.com has posted the 45 Golden Age collections
included in their upcoming book, entitled "The Guide to Comic Book
Pedigrees, Volume I." The list includes summaries of each collection,
and includes a sample of graphs, pictures, and charts that will appear in
the book. "We've spent countless hours discussing which collections
will make this list," says Matt Nelson, who is co-authoring the pedigree
book with Stephen Ritter and CGC Graders, Mark Haspel and West Stephan. "Many
were obviously going to make it, like the Mile High, Larson, Allentown and
Pennsylvania. These collections have been around for decades, and became
part of the hobby's landscape a long time ago. Others were more difficult
to agree on, because they were either too new or the collections were never
disbursed into the hobby, such as the Chinatown, Williamsport, and Northern
Cal pedigrees. There were also a few that have never received the attention
they deserve. We feel they deserve inclusion based on their size,
depth, and quality, like Cookeville and Toledo."
Stephen Ritter adds that they were careful to assess each collection
by the four criteria generally expected of a pedigree — quality,
size, presence of key issues, and market acceptance. "Because
some collections were never assimilated into the hobby, it's impossible
to gauge market acceptance on every one. In these cases, we had
to rely on the other three criteria to determine whether those particular collections deserved
inclusion." In addition to the story behind each collection,
the original lists will be published in the book, as well as detailed
charts and graphs that reveal genre, publisher, and grade trends
within each pedigree. The 45 collections will also be ranked by
grade, page quality, size, scarcity, and value. "There will
definitely be some eye-openers once readers see how the pedigrees compare
to each other," says Ritter.
The list of 45 pedigreed collections can be found at comicpedigrees.com/pedigrees.htm. The
Web site also discusses the four criteria for pedigreed collections,
as well as updates on the forthcoming book, which has a tentative release
date at the end of 2007.
