Defects Caused by Improper Pressing: Mirror-Like Surface

Posted on 3/11/2014

The use of excessive heat can result in a "Mirror-Like Surface" pressing defect.

Similar to the pebbling effect caused by humidification, improper heat pressing can result in a mirror-like surface on color areas of a cover. Excessive heat in conjunction with certain material against the color area of a cover will alter the color and gloss into a very smooth, reflective surface. This process can also lift off color, which leaves behind a speckled appearance. Some colors and issues are more susceptible, particularly the reds on Timelys. In some cases this side effect can be minimized or eliminated, but usually the defect is permanent.
