A very appealing copy of the first appearance of Batman in Detective Comics #27 will be auctioned at the Heritage Auctions event on Feb. 21–22, 2013. The auction will be at the Fletcher-Sinclair Mansion, 2 East 79th Street, New York. The book will be sold without reserve.
This copy previously changed hands in the June 1995 Sotheby's auction, at which time the cataloger noted the "very bright colors to the front cover." The sale price of $68,500 seems modest now, but at the time, Comic Book Marketplace proclaimed it "surely a record for a mid-grade comic."
Steve Borock, senior consignment director at Heritage, commented, "I was a bidder on this book when I was at the Sotheby's auction, but at the time, the price seemed too high for me to keep bidding it up. Sure wish I had the foresight to win this copy! I loved the look of this book back then and still do!"
