Hurricane Sandy Collection in ComicConnect May Auction, Event Auction Previewed

Posted on 5/7/2013

Britta and Brick Wenzel, live and work in Lavallette, N.J., and own Salty’s, a restaurant and gift shop near the shore. After Hurricane Sandy, Salty’s was left under six feet of flood water and the Wenzels were forced to move out and cease business operations. Much to their surprise, and with some help from ComicConnect, the couple was about to find a bit of hope.

ComicConnect, which had previously broken records by selling an Action #1 for $2,161,000, graded the Wenzels’ comics from low- to high-grade and noted that there are many medium-grade comics in the mix — and they feel that this may be the spark of good fortune the family needs.

“We’re very fortunate to have the opportunity to help this couple begin rebuilding their lives. Besides being an incredible collection of comic books, it’s an opportunity to help the Wenzels get a fresh start,” Stephen Fishler of ComicConnect said about the auction.

The Hurricane Sandy Collection auction began Monday, April 29, 2013, at noon.

Young Allies #1 CGC 2.5, All-Star Comics #18 CGC 8.0, Marvel Mystery #32 CGC 4.0, Young Allies, #2 CGC 7.0, Captain America #53 VF-, America’s Best Comics #7 CGC 6.0, Donald Duck Four-Color #9 G+, Mystery in Space #1 CGC 6.0, Action Comics #34 CGC 4.0. The auction ends Tuesday, May 14, at 6:00 p.m. EDT. The Spring Event Auction preview has begun, and the company is showcasing an original owner Fantastic Four run in the auction.

High-grade Fantastic Four Run in ComicConnect Event Auction

Hidden away for decades, this original owner Fantastic Four collection has survived more than 50 years of tempting offers, with the most recent in the six-figures. The comics were stored in a simple shirt box in the closet and survived several moves, including a stint in the Air Force when the owner's mom threw out the rest of his collection.

“When I was a kid in the neighborhood, my friends would all share and swap their comics, but not me. I wouldn’t let anyone even look at them. After 50 years, I hate to see them go, but I’m ready for other collectors to enjoy them as much as I have.”

The consignor personally delivered the Fantastic Four collection to CGC for certification and then flew them to the ComicConnect offices in the heart of New York City.

This showcase collection includes the first 24 issues of the seminal series with highlights including #1 CGC 7.0, #5 CGC 9.2 and #12 CGC 9.4, as well as the first two annuals. Every comic in the collection has at least off-white to white pages and near-perfect registration. “I hid these comics away for two generations. They were the only comics I saved from my childhood and I’m happy to offer them in this auction.”

The Event Auction begins in May and can be previewed here.
