  1. Continuing my journey in my grandfather's name

This marks my third year walking in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. I lost my grandfather after a 30+ year battle with prostate cancer on September 9th, 2011. He has been one of the biggest inspirations in my life and continues to inspire me to this day.

Last year I raised $2550, although this year with a new job I have not been able to do as much fundraising, not to mention I have been on the committee for my event to help plan everything so that's been taking up my time as well.

I know cancer has touched just about everyone's life in some form or another and really this link is just for anyone interested in helping me out.

    http://main.acsevents.org/goto/mikelutes13

That is the link to my personal donation page on the American Cancer Society's website. Also, if anyone is interested in any comics I have, I'd definitely consider selling some in return for donations as opposed to money. I did this on the boards last year and it did really help raise some money for this great cause. As much as I love my comics I am more passionate about this cause, so no matter what kind of support you can give, whether its a kind word or a passing on of the message, thank you. Every ounce of support does mean a lot to me.

  2. Just thought i'd share what i did last year on FCBD and give credit to a great comic store owner named Earl.

Last year i was in the Army living in Killeen TX, my local comic store was Americas Heroes and the owner's name was Earl. He told me about a month out that he was trying to get Sam De la Rosa for an in-store signing on FCBD, I was excited. Yeah he was no Mcfarlane or Lee but at least he tried to get someone. I went home, went on eBay an secured me a NM copy of Venom LP #1. All the other bigger chain stores in Austin had some of the hotter current names in the business, but me being a vintage collector i was excited about Sam.

Earl would tell me for the next four weeks every time i came in his store, that he was trying to get a CGC rep or to have them authorize him to be a witness. It never happend, but hey at least he tried. FCBD was upon us, I didnt get to the store at 10 right when it opened, maybe an hour or two into it. When i got there it was a pretty good turn out, I was proud of Earl.

Sam had a little set up in the corner of the store, he didn't charge anything for his signature and had some original artwork and pre-signed stuff for sale at reasonable prices.

I got my comic signed and bought an 18 x 30 pic of Venom that he signed for free, which i put in a black frame and it looks AWESOME. Of course I'm envious that Kaholo got his Venom #1 SS'd but hey, I was happy with what i got.I currently live in Chula Vista CA now, everybody is waiting for the SDCC. Big city, lots of comic stores, but it doesn't measure up to my small town comic store back in Texas and my boy Earl who tried his best to do something special for his customers. Thanks for reading.

a brief bit about my comic collecting history

My first comic was 1st comic was Amazing Spider-Man #173. It was given to me by a friend of mine, most likely in early 1978. It was his older brother's. I still have it. I've bought a few more since then.

My first major collecting period was between 1986-1993(bought some good books and a lot of ). I infrequently bought comics between 1994-2006 and sold about 1/2 my collection in 1997 after a drunk ran his truck into my house. He hit the wall where my long boxes were and ended up parked on my bed. He missed the gas meter by about 2 feet. Surprisingly, at least 95% of my comcs remained unscathed. They were packed fairly tight, and most were boarded or two in a bag with a board between them. I mainly sold the ones I did because I didn't want to re-bag them. Most of the sleeves had an icky feel to them. So all the low value books, that didn't have any potential went to a friend of mine or HPB.

I started seriously collecting again in late 2006. I slowed down a bit in 2011, as I was more focused on the the Topps giveaway program, but I've pretty much been going full steam since. My current collection has 8,000+ individual issues with 3,000+ extras that I have in a consignment store.

accident pic below - it happened around 2AM, and I was watching Murder by Death - being a nite owl paid off in spades!

Won a supposed 9.8 comic that did not live up to the seller's promise...

I won an auction on eBay of one of these limited comics... 1/150 Marvel books advertised as a 9.8 perfect comic. Received the comic... all was good until I noticed that the entire left edge of the spine, the color had been rubbed off. Never in my 35 years of collecting have I seen a comic that had this uniform of a problem... All the corners were perfect, nice gloss, not color breaks or creases... interior pages were fine. Back cover as well. The only problem was the entire left spine the color was rubbed off. Might have happened when this comic was shipped to the original comic shop it arrived at. Anyhow, can anyone hazard a guess of the possible grade range... Somehow, I do not think it would be worth grading. Long story short, I contacted the seller after checking his posted picture of the comic. Notified him that he had obviously trimmed his picture he posted for the auction and removed the rubbed off spine. After having to get eBay Resolution Dept. involved, he has offered to refund full amount. Crazy huh... Thanks

    Loving comics on vacation!

COI loves Spider-Man. COI has never owned a Spidey 1 or AF 15 and that makes COI sad. Not Sadfan sad, mind you, but still sad.

    Looking for any recent revelations.

Found a few threads on this matter, the more current one being a year old. Just wondering if there are any updates/changes or what folks are doing these days for removing partial sticker residue on slabs.

  5. Perez is a Machine

So I went to the NY comic show today. It was a one day show and it turned out great. It was a small venue and although there was not a lot of guests each one that was there was very accessible. I ended up getting about 30 books signed by George Perez as well as a 40.00 sketch of Adam Warlock. Chris Claremont signed another 40 or so for me as well as a couple more by Mark Texiera, Alex Maleev, and Bill Tucci. I also had 3 books sent for SS CGC. They were GI Joe 48, Tales of the Teen Titans 44, and Ghost Rider 6 and I sent them in fast track for the first time. It was a light show but I am saving up for Philly, Baltimore, and 2 for NY. I might try to sneak in a couple more like Chicago and Boston but only if it is worth it and the creators don't overlap.

My son loves comics too and is quite the artist! Hello...DC, Marvel you guys hiring?

Okay a little self serving journal being a gushing parent. My son has been helping me go through my collection and re-board and bag everything as we prepare books for sale. He is 20 and is an actor who was a lead in a kids TV show for one season and the funds ran out so he is back home auditioning (the life of an actor!) and helping his old man when he is able with his huge comic obsession turned garage sale :)

He is an artist through and through and though I knew he has been drawing for years and have seen snippets of his recent work and thought wow, he actually might have talent, I really never gave it that much thought given his acting career. Then he hands me this drawing and asks if I will scan it for him...

HOLY ..... Wow. I told him he should consider being a comic artist for a career along with the acting. He claims that he isn't fast enough at this point...I don't know, I think with the ability to do this kind of thing out of his head (which he did) speed will come....

Anyway just a cool part of my day today, thinking that my son might actually be able to fit into this industry that I have delved in for many years...

Yeah, I know...I hate listening to gushing parents too so thanks for listening.

    grading/quality control?

Well after getting one modern order of about 15 books back in a flash for CGC standards (4 months) we are back to the normal 6 month wait. I hate a lot of the books lose that initial value rush while you are waiting. I know you can do the fast track but for modern it better be like a 1:150 or 1:200 and be fore sure a 9.8 to be worth $30 for grading. I have had one in since 11/9 and reached graded about a month ago but then went into a new catagory called grading/quality control and has been there over a month. I now have 4 orders sitting in either graded or this new catagory. My shipment from early feb is now scheduled and will probably hit graded before they ship out the one from 11/09 of 2012! if they hired more graders, which is great dont get me wrong, it stands to reason you need more encapsulators/shippers.

  8. Ok,I'm not that great a writer but what do you expect from Math major.

Yes, it's been a longtime since I posted anything. I must admit I've had some other events in my life that have caused this but that's no excuse. I like to write if someone is reading and for those that follow me . . . I'll try to do better.

I lost my job awhile back and between interviewing and looking for a new job I did some collectng of some great books. I was shopping craigslist, ebay, flea markets and small conventions. I found some great books, and some not so great books. Not the smartest move for someone who has no job but I love my comics.

Well, I found a job back in November and have been working to prove myself and make a name for myself at a big company that I really wasn't sure I would ever get into. I would say my dream job but more my dream company. The new boss is great, and the job, while a step down from where I was before has great potential. I have much to learn and I'm happy for the chance to make it work.

Back to the books, I found things I thought I could not ever find. Captain America 100 in really nice shape from local comic shop owner at a local small convention that happenes to be a good friend and cut me a great deal on the book. I'll be helping him out on Free comic book day again this year and hopefully many more to come.

I found an Incredible Hulk 181 at a small convention that while far less then perfect still had the value stamp and was in decent shape. I have a better copy but when you see one of these at the price I got it for you grab it.

I also picked up a couple copies of Conan the Barbarian 1. I love this iconic cover. It was again at a small convention and I got a great deal.

Next I got a couple copies of Iron Man 1. I'm not the biggest Iron Man fan but over the years I've picked up a few issues and at least one of the two copies is in decent shape.

These are the four comics I submitted with my coupon this year. I know they are not perfect and will come back with lower grades then I suspect or hope for but that's fine because they are mine from a time in my life when I didn't know where I was going to land and I will always remember them as such.

    Worth the memories.

  9. The World's Best collection of Amazing Adventures 11-17

Amazing Adventures 11 was one of the most memorable comics of my youth. I was a fan of the Beast, a wise-cracking scientist and I had a very negative initial reaction to the change in his appearance. I remember thinking that Marvel had ruined the character.

I like to write and I hope others will read this

So far my experince on the Collecters Society chat boards has been a pleasant one, the one post where I asked for my fellow collecters opinions is already up to three pages!!! I went to the Comic preservation forum and learned those ultra pro boards I've been using in the long run will hurt my comics "oh " so Im looking into E-Gerber for my bad/board solution. On my days off I'll be taking all my backing boards out. I've also seen by the registry sets that I might have a chance to compete with my favorite female character. Come payday I'll be buying my first slabbed comics on Ebay and I've check all the numbers their legit.

What goes into narrowing and expanding a collection all at the same time.

    First journal entry:

So I have way too many books - both CGC & raw. I have unloaded a good amount of books over the past 3 months and have acquired some really nice books over that same time period. I have also come to realize THE books I really want in my personal collection. Now I am in the process of fine-tuning that list and sticking with it. Any pointers on anything to do with this are more than welcome. Also, I will be inventorying my collection here and books that I would like to add to the individual collections below (not yet acquired). I enjoy the research and chase, but there may come a time where I ask you all for help in finding issues (e.g., Black Panther appearances that I have not identified).

    My collection(s):

    X-Men #1-66, 94-141, Variant covers thereafter

    Significant Black Panther Appearances: FF #52, 53; Avengers #52, 62, 73, 74, 78, & 87 (list to grow)

Batgirl (Barbara Gordon): TEC (and other early) issues featuring her first appearances and her solo stories

30c Variants - I started collecting, heavily that is, with modern variants. Lost interest with many of those. I have, however, started to really enjoy the thrill of tracking these down.

Jungle Comics - I'm collecting this set raw (for some reason). The journey that took me here is rather odd. I started buying GFT books, fell in love with the art of Dave Stevens and similar artists, and then found my way to Jungle Comics. Love the vivid colors, the action depicted, and the GGA art style that that era is known for, in part.

Take care and thanks for reading.

    Until next time,

    Andy-

  10. Image books!

Well, Im getting ready for my next submission and although Ive now collected nearly all the Daredevil Vol 2 newsstand issues ungraded (ready for submitting) I feel like a change. Recently Ive been reading and collecting a lot of Image books so I thought I would send some off, there have been so many good ones but I always limit myself to no more than 10 books at a time to CGC, so Ive plumped for Saga#1-#3 and #7, Bedlam #1 - Third Eye, Phantom, Unsigned Forbidden Planet, 2nd print and #2 phantom variants ((and also Secret Invasion #1 - 1:50 Leinil Francis Yu Cover to make it to ten !)(Im sure if I hold onto to it any longer it will disintegrate))

My collecting habits have really grown since first joining CGC 7/8 years ago when I only collected Marvel, I now have a full run (so far) of Batman (2011), runs of about 9/10 different Image titles and even a Dark Horse book, Colder which is very quirky.

Im still looking to finish my Marvel graded sets and have 8 Pressman variants, 13 DD newsstand variants, three other DD issues, a whole slew of Secret Invasion books and even Der Tod Von Captain America a German version of The Death Of Cap limited to 999 with a cracking Marko Djurdevic cover that I love - it should grade highly (fingers crossed)

I will let you know how I get on, Good Hunting

    Phil

  11. Wolverine #35

As a die-hard Wolverine fan,I wanted to get all the Wolverine books in CGC 9.8 SSs in my Wolverine Registry Sets.

    But there was a setback.

Apparently, there was never a CGC 9.8 copy of Wolverine #35.

The book was infamous for having printing defects that kept it from getting a 9.8 grade.

So,I took the challenge of being the first one to get a CGC 9.8 SS copy of #35.

    In Dec,I achieved the impossible.

I want to thank 2 people for helping me achieve my goal.

Bosco685 for letting me buy the book from him.

And Rich Henn for getting it signed & graded.

I just today received my Devil's Rejects #1 comic from IDW and was a little disappointed at the grade of 9.0 but I can't list it here because there is no category for The Devil's Rejects. Makes me wonder, am I the only one to send in a copy for grading? Who knows?

  15. The never ending collection...

As a Harvey collector there are a vast number of items that Harvey produced along with comic books. From promotional posters, games, toys, and just about anything you can imagine Harvey put out many items in the effort to sell their line of comic books. Most of the items in my collection are in what I would refer to as being in 9.8 condition and the rest are pretty close. I have taken a photograph of all my items to display here and strive to replace any that don't hit my 9.8 criteria and add many more in the future. Thanks for looking and enjoy!

    The quality never ends...

As many may know, the publishers of Dingleberry Comics printed several promotional flyers titled "Parké" & "Finghé". Sadly, due to the complete and utter lack of interest by anyone at all, only one copy of each still exists. The only extant copy of "Parké" grades a 4.5 Restored, with extensive pieces added, color touch, and tear seals abundant throughout. The extant "Finghé", sadly, is missing 1/3 of the sheet, and what remains is heavily worn and aged. A must for any collector!

Father and son journey to find or get S.S. superman comics

My son and I found Superman 75 and 76 on eBay. We are now going to find and certify the whole death of superman collection. We are planning on going to at least two comic shows a year to help accomplish this. We are excited to do this as father and son and I am hoping that he will continue this with his own kids.
