  1. Big buy for me in this world of comics i left in the 80's. Now i am addicted and i want all the key comics that are so important to me!!

I used to collect comics way back in the 80's (i am 40 years old) i was into Superman, Spider-man, Silver Surfer, Thor and a bunch of other comics. I remember seeing Superman #1 sitting at behind glass at this comic book store for $2000 and thought that was ridiculous. Boy was i wrong. now look what it is worth. The most i have spent on comics was 40 bucks.

I stopped collecting around 1987 and got into martial arts etc..girls...blah blah.

it wasn't until i finally saw comic book men this year 2012 that i rediscovered my long lost interest. I ended up being so succumbed by this very addictive hobby that i ended up getting Amazing Fantasy #15 6.5 signature Series Restored, Tales of Suspense #39 6.0, Nick Fury #1 9.2, Silver Surfer #1 8.5, Spiderman #5 7.5, and wolverine Special Edition Series #1-4 NM (still awaiting CGC rating) all this in 1 week) i am not rich either so it was a big deal for me to get these. Putting these in a bank vault and won't take them out for another 20 years at least.

  2. I love auctions.....

With all the hype surrounding the latest Heritage Auction, I decided to tune in on the internet. I am amazed at the prices, but I am glad that collectors are putting money into something that they hopefully love.

Admittedly, I did have one impulse purchase - The Walking Dead #1 CGC 9.8.

    What?

Well, it seemed that the price was reasonable considering what I had seen on EBAY lately. Admittedly it isn't as much of a good deal when you add in the buyers premium, shipping, and sales tax. However, with so many premium lots of older books, I am hoping that folks just overlooked it in favor of getting to the older books.

I know that many of you think that TWD is in a bubble, but I love the story and I think with the TV show, it has far greater legs that many give it credit for.

If I had to do it all over again, I think I would have bid on the Thor #337 CGC 9.9 signed by Stan Lee. This is one of the first books I ever bought as a kid and it remains one of my all time favorites.

Thanks for reading and happy collecting.

  3. ...and a major thanks to CGC.

I finally got my final shipment in from C2E2 2012. I was really excited to get these back because they were from a Geoff Johns' signing.

At every convention we go to, my brother and I will choose an item or two to both get to be a sort of remembrance gift of our trip. One year, we bought a set of the FullMetal Alchemist pocket watches. Another was a set of zombie figures. This year, we decided to grab a couple comics and get them signed by Johns. I thought it'd be interesting to get them graded so that they'd branded with the date. I grabbed a set of Aquaman #1 and Green Lantern #1 at a vendor.

We got up to the table and talked to him briefly. I'd said thanks for giving us "Aquadog" since my brother stole my thunder and thanked him for making Aquaman so enjoyable. He had a stack of first print Justice League #1, signed a couple and said thanks for being a fans and that it was why he does what he does.

After debating for a minute or two, I decided to include the JL #1s. I mean, they were free gifts, why not? Even if they came back a 9.4 or 9.6 (they were just in a pile, from a box DC gave him), they'd still be an awesome piece as part of the set.

Fast forward about 4.5 months, and the shipment arrives.

Honestly, highest grade I expected was a 9.6. The Aquaman/Green Lantern set was bought on the fly from a random vendor. I just wanted to have something for him to sign, really. You can guess my surprise when I open the box to see the top comic is one of the Justice League #1s at a 9.8! Keep going and going, 9.8 after 9.8. All 6 books submitted for the Signature Series grade came back in a beautiful 9.8 yellow banner.

As such, comes the close of my first adventure submitting anything to CGC. The turn around time not withstanding, it has been fun. All the books I submitted came back what I thought (the Ultimate Spider-Man #160 1:100 variant) or far better than I'd hoped (these books). And the packages seemed to be timed to come in on days that I could have really use the pick-me-up.

So, for that and the awesome overall experience (especially with me calling to check the status of my books like an obsessed zombie), thank you, CGC. And thanks to this awesome community for finally making me jealous enough to take the leap and start buying and submitting.

    Until next time, happy hunting!

Be proud of who you are and what you find enjoyable!

I grew up with a coach for a dad, so needless to say athletics were the expected norm of my activities for his son. The problem was I loved comics! I was a standout athlete in football, baseball, and wrestling, but my true passion was girls and comics. To my friends, girl were an exceptible and encouraged norm, but comics were for the geeks. So I always hid the fact from friends that I loved comics.

Out of high school I attended college and got into a fraternity, the whole while hiding my passion for comics. Four years later I'm commissioned an Infantry Officer, charged with the welfare of my rifle platoon...many of which were rabid comic fans. I would often hear them engaging in conversations after missions about Wolverine, The Punisher, and the Avengers (my favorite). The whole time being a fly on the wall, just listening. I could have trumped them any time in there knowledge or who would beat who, but I chose silence.

Fast forward 5 years and my son is born. Now I have an excuse as to why I'm collecting comics...they're for my son! Only partially true! Yes I do enjoying the bonding and shared experience of collecting with my son, but now I can say those are my sons and not own up to the fact I'm a comics book geek.

When I obtained the rank of Major it must have been the breaking point or my mid life crisis, but I finally came out of the closet about this love of collecting and it feels great! What surprised me was the number of my peers that share the same passion and were me 20 years ago...too afraid to man up about this incredible love of collecting and reading comics.

BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front): be proud of who are and what you love to do! If you're friends don't except it...find some new ones like I have over the past few years and now on this forum. Thanks for listening to my rants and I'll step off my soap box now.

  4. Upgrades and registry set fine tuning

I've recently upgraded many issues on my Ghosts registry set. Now only 5 issues remain: 1 (I sold my 9.4 because I want a 9.6 or better), 47, 50 (upgrade my 9.2), 57, 81.

I've recently uploaded all images to the registry set and made my descriptions easier to read. Hoping 2013 will be the year I can close this one out!

How much is this comic book really worth? I recently saw one sell for $455.00 graded at a 9.8....was that just a one time thing or is this comic really worth that much?

Thanks for any help with this!

  7. Midnight box breaks

Alright, this was a nite to remember! So, i get the news my friend is feeling a lil blue, i tell him to come over so we can open some star wars galaxy 7 cards. I had bought two boxes for $20 apiece at this flea market i frequent. He gets to my house about 12:30 am, and by 1:14 ish we get a big hit out of our what was supposed to be a one box break. Well as luck would have it i pulled a luke skywalker sketch card, or so we thought! Turns out its 1:231 packs ratio sketchagraph card not only is it an original sketch of mark hamil,l but its also signed by mister hamill himself and the artist sarah wilkinson! Well this journal is less about my big hit, but more about the ferver that insued shortly after. So high on foil wrappers, and cardboard glory he starts suggesting we open more boxes! At first i was reluctant, but i soon caved in because his magic is undeniable. So i tell him i have two clone wars widevision retail boxes, and i explain to him taht retail boxes are not like hobby boxes the ratios are double the odds, basically hobbies have 1:24 packs odds and retails 1:48 packs odds ( for sketches). Well at 24 packs per box our odds were low..... Or so i thought out of the two boxes we got two sketches one of which i like the other bein so-so. So still not satiated my friend says whats next?!?!?!? I tell him he's crazy! He tells me 1 more...so i break easier than the boxes we just cracked...i admit to having 3 topps transformers rots boxes....he proceeds to "read" each box, and settles on 1 in particular....i tell him autographs are rarer, 1:91 packs! Seeing how i opened two boxes previously, and did not get a hit i figure our odds are good....i tell him also that some autos dont command big bucks like peter cullen and shia lebeouf...close to the end he pulls a shia lebeouf autograph, well im not a fan of shia and i was happy to pull it, but i was dyin for an optimus cullen card....but still it was better than nothing. All in all it was a goodnite and opening packs of cards is reinvigorating and exciting brings me back to my youth....thanx for reading..... Oh yea just in case some people say this is comic collectors site well one weekend my contact wasnt there at the flea market so i ended buyin y the last man's 12-18 for 50 cents apiece so there nyah!

  8. General questions about how others go about building their sets.

Being new to the CGC community I was wondering how the more seasoned set builders approach their collecting. I just started with a few sets with only a couple issues, knowing that I have more to add when my books arrive graded from CGC.

When you collect, do you pay attention to completing a set or to points? Or do you just collect what you want and if you build a nice set, more power to it...

Also, since page quality doesn't appear to be calculated into the set scoring from what I can tell... do you concern yourself with getting the best possible page quality? I've noticed that higher page quality can fetch a 10% to 50% premium - worth it? The same can be said for pedigrees as well.

Also wondering if anyone out there lets the point value of the book influence what price they'll pay for a book. Take for example a Captain Marvel 9.8 offered for $350, but only scores 120 pts - would you still pay that price?

I'm new to this, so any advice from seasoned set builders would be appreciated - thanks for reading!

    wolvie

well i had sent out my own comic to get cgc'd back in march, and i recieved it today. Most of the time i buy books that are already cgc'd. This is the first book of my own collection that i sent out to get graded. A good friend of mine purchased wolverine: origins #2 canadian variant (1 for 100) for me as a wedding, new house, bday gift. Which was pregraded by cgc with a 9.6.. I had already owned the same issue with the original cover so i thought it would be a neat idea to have this one graded as well to display them both. I was hoping to get the same grade as the canadian variant. I got the issue back today and it was a 8.5.. Not a big deal. It is still very cool. Least now the issue will be 8.5 forever haha, it wont get any worse. It still was a very good experiance, and i hope to send more of my own collection to get graded. At least now i know what to look for in my seems, corners etc before sending them out. thanks for reading

  10. First submission in a long time and pleasantly surprised!

Got my coupon books graded and the turnaround time has been spot on thus far. Kudos to CGC for a job well done!

The 4 books I submitted were:

Strange Tales 115 (Early Spidey app and Sandman 2nd app)

Strange Tales Annual 2 (4th app of Spidey)

    Amazing Spider-Man 43 (1st full MJ)

    Amazing Spider-Man 49 (beautiful Vulture/Kraven cover)

I expected the following grades/(and got these):

    ST 115: 6.5 OW /(7.5 OW) SWEET!

    ST AN 2: 4.0 OW /(5.0 OW-W) SCORE!

    ASM 43: 8.0 OW-W /(6.5 OW-W) BOO!

    ASM 49: 8.0 W /(8.0 OW-W) Pretty spot on!

Been so long since I submitted I forgot how much fun it was to finally get word on them. I stupidly let last year's coupon expire so I missed out on submitted 3 free books. Wasn't going to let that happen two years in a row.

Now the wait for the shipped books to get here!

  14. Will he ever find his grail signers? Will he ever afford them if he finds them? Tune in next time, true believers....

I have a handful of Signature Series books. Most of them were purchased online, nearly all of those on eBay. But, one thing that I'm not likely to find online is a Doctor Who book signed by a member of the cast, or writing/production team. Many of those folks are in England, and not that many witnesses go "across the pond" to begin with. But, many of them don't do many public appearances. Perhaps I'll be able to get some of these done in the future.

Another thing that I'd like to have done is a copy of the Flash TV Special signed by the main cast members and Mark Hammil. I think one of my favorite parts he ever played was of the Trickster. Of course, the first appearance of the Trickster would be great, but I'm not likely going to be able to afford it anytime soon in good enough condition to make an SS worth doing. But, I can dream.

Another book that would be great would be the Dell Movie Classics of Doctor Who and The Daleks signed by surviving cast members. I think Bernard Cribbens would be great on a book too because he's been in the new series, and was in Invasion Earth : 2150 A.D. A majority of these actors don't do public appearances either, or are older and are out of "the scene", as it were. But, hopefully I'd get the chance to get a witness to secure a book or two for me.

    introduction.

Back in my early teen years, i was a comic book reader, pretty avid one. really enjoyed them. i was a marvel kid for the most part.

i wish i would have kept my books. i got rid of literally all of them. did not hang on to one. that being said, now as an old man, i dont have much desire to read comics. its the collecting addict in me that has me wanting to pick up CGC Graded copies.

i am in an interesting position now since i own not one comic. i have a clean canvas, totally blank which i can "color" as i please with.

kind of like starting fresh, all over again.

ive put together a list of comics that i loved as a kid and bought when they were released, or could not afford at the time, but loved via staring at them on various comic book store "walls" (where the "money" books were always displayed) here is the list ...

    Always drooled over...

    Giant Sized Xmen #1

    XMen #94

    Amazing Spiderman #129

    Hulk #181

Bought these when they were released ...

    Amazing Spiderman #252

    Secret Wars #8

    Web Of Spiderman # 1

    Secret Wars #1

    XFactor #1

    New Mutants #1

i THINK i'd ike to own these in CGC form. what grade is the question. i have to be honest that i am having a hard time deciphering how CGC goes about handing out their assigned grades.

i have my eye on an 8.0 XMen 94. and to look at the scan of it, it looks really nice, not all that much different from some 9.0's that ive seen. the price differnence between the two is nearly double.

i wonder if this really is for me. id really like to settle on a FOCUS (ring a bell?). id really like to do so because with this literally fresh start, i can build from the ground up, something i wish i had the chance to do when it came to the card slabs

    Digital Comics Collector

Hi, everybody. I'm new in the comic world. I'm crazy about digital stuff so I collect digitally distributed arts like comics and games. It's quite different from traditional collection, while it's still a kind of collections, right?

Here is my collection on ComiXology, as the image shows. Batman and Superman are my favorite superheroes.

I spend much time on ComiXology and Steam, hoping to make new friends here.

I became a member last week and Submitted my first books to CGC at Boston Comiccon

I have been lurking about the CGC site for a few years now. I finally decided last week to join - knowing I was going to Boston for the convention helped push me in. I submitted 28 books at the con. Now, I find it exciting to logon everyday and check to see if my books have been received and entered into the system. Of course, I am anxious to see what grades they get. Professionally graded comics is all very new to me. Off and on, over the years I have managed to collect some pretty nice books - all of which I have gently read, bagged, boarded and boxed. My first step has been taken and I am interested to where it will take me...

    I am addicted again

Just like in the hay days of the 90's I am addicted to comics again thanks to Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Image comics. AMC's show helped as well. I am on my way to have a 50% complete CGC registered set and hope to complete someday. I remember in the 90's as a kid going to the comic shope every Wed. to pick my holds up. Now its hard to find a shop to do that because the economy and so many customers don't pick up their orders. Now I am left with the internet and primarily ebay. Grading is a whole nother story. I love seeing those 9.8 beauties incased and ready for display, reading...that is what trade paper backs are for! More to come...

    & Next submission

I just recently received my Walking Dead 27 and my Wolverine 1 back from CGC. To my surprise the grades exceeded my expectations, which really shows i was just guessing. My walking dead 27 i thought i might get a 9.2 but came back 9.6! Uggghh that close to 9.8! Maybe ill have it pressed in the future see if i cant get that 9.8. Wolverine 1 i guessed would be a 9.4 and that one came back 9.8! Super stoked about that one as it was my first comic i ever purchased. Still waiting for my Green lantern 40 and Action comics 304 to be scheduled for grading. I aslo have sent in a second submission of modern comics(9 of them). This submission includes my walking dead 35 error variant that im hoping once graded will be the highest graded copy in the census. And with where WD prices are now, I can not wait to get this one back!
