The great dilemma, buying raw comics vs CGC graded!
If familiar with any of my previous journal entries, you may know that my interest is in Fantastic Four pedigree's. And I'm certain most comic collectors are aware that high grade CGC comics and especially pedigree CGC copies can be astronomical in price. This is where my dilemma has begun! Should I purchase raw graded pedigree comics and submit to CGC or purchase CGC graded pedigree copies off open market?
The biggest problem that I h
Finally got me another Avengers CGC. Issue 502 coming in at 9.8 Not a bad purchase got it fairly cheap like the other. I am really surprised that I have been getting the avengers so quickly rather than Sgt. Rock . Although I did win a CGC Sgt. Rock the other day so am waiting for that to come in the mail. Looking forward to that as well as a couple more avengers, go figure......
Journal entry with guns, sex, lies, and deciets with a splash of harsh ultra-violence and comic book collecting? Sounds R-rated, eh?
So, I may have "over-stated/over-exaggerate" the topic of today journal entry... maybe a just a tad-bit?
So heres where my journey starts off... Its August 11th or 12th.
(It is the day before the "new release" of the new "modern comics" and I called my local comic book shop on the pho
My first cgc.
Well I finally received my first CGC comic, an Avengers 500 in 9.8 condition. Started my set and come in at rank 20. Got alot of work to catch up to the top boys. Got it at a good price so I can't complain. Will have more Avengers soon so perhaps I will move up a little more in the ranks.
I sent two books to CGC to grade. They are: Conan #1 3rd Print, Dark Horse & How to Draw Eastman & Lairds Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Solson Publications.
They have them right now. Now I just have to wait 20days for their grades & return. The books looked above NM, but we'll see what they'll give 'em.
Just getting started!!
Hello everyone, this is my first journal entry and wanted to say hi and hope to get to know a few people that have the same passion as I do with comics. I am in the military and have been stationed overseas for the last 5 to 6 years and was dying to get back to the states and visit a comic store to get up to speed on what's going on in comics these days. My only source was Wizard magazine and then it was always a couple of months behind.
But to my surprise, I got stat
The origins, plot twists, secrets, discovery, and even revelations with past/future predictions of my life in the "comic fast lane"!
Now I bet your wondering... "Whats with the title?" You usually have your JOURNAL ENTRY tell about your exploits/journey to your "local comic book shop" and what been installed into your ever growing comic collection of mainly "DC titles".
I have been doing alot of thinking and reading (Whether it be in the community forums of "Collectors Society" or th
I?ve been having a lot of fun with my registry set lately and wanted to share my experiences, but then I thought why not make this a recurring event? So if you?re reading this, welcome to issue #1!!
Quick about me- I?m a Christian family man who enjoys collecting high grade Bronze Age appearances of the X-men and Silver Surfer. If this sounds like someone you have no interest in hearing from please stop reading now, otherwise proceed.

"BIGGER BETTER FASTER MORE!"
Stop the Registry, I want to get off. I have been addicted to the Registry. I know it. As a collecting resource it holds no equal, but it has turned into something else entirely. The old adage of, "BIGGER BETTER FASTER MORE!" comes to mind. Add this. Move that. This is right. That is wrong. Enough is enough. It isn't fun anymore. I am not interested in a competition. I am not interested in an award. It isn't supposed to be a chore. I am waiting for the day when I c
great books & even greater frustration
Just added Thor 221 & 222 in 9.4. And I have bids on Thor 225 9.6, 226 9.4 & Journey Into Mystery 125 9.0. Found an Avengers 42 in 9.4 which is high on my interest radar. And found an auction for Avengers 48 9.6 which I will most probably end up bidding way too much for and still get sniped at the end. So is the life I suppose....
Actually this might be a good time to vent about a very frustrating thing that happened a few weeks ago. I
Comic-Con is a must for any fan.
My family and I just drove back home to Arizona after spending five amazing days at the San Diego Comic-Con. Everyone had a great time and the weather was nice. If you go next year though, be prepared to spend a lot of money because hotel ($120/night), gas ($75/tank) and food ($12-25/person/meal) are expensive. Taking the trolley from the hotel (we stayed in Hotel Circle) to the Con helps because it?s only $15/person for a four day pass and you don?t have to pa
Whoa! I bet you wondering where have I've been up to... intrigued?
Long time no journal I must say, so let me catch you up on my collecting life...
Long, long time ago (Ok, maybe like July 23rd)... I was in deep trouble with my super arch-villian called, "bills". Car note bill was creeping up on me and also a storage fee (In Michigan) that I would soon have to deal with at the beginning of August, which was "coming around the block soon"("Sotospeak").
I must say that I hate being o
Well, it took a lot longer than I thought it would, but I've done it! I've bagged/boarded all my old Incredible Hulk books. I now have a clearer sense of my inventory...
It took a lot longer than I thought it would. Given the fact that I physical limitations, the task probably took longer for me than it would for anyone else. Also, I was taking the time to scan the covers into my PC as I bagged/boarded, which slowed things down. This became too tedious, however. In the interest of finishing th
Collecting the Prince of Power
With his recent surge in popularity in Incredible Herc, I decided to go for early appearances of Hercules. Man, who thought collecting such a secondary character would be so tough! I have managed a reasonable assembly thus far: JIM Annual 1 9.0, JIM 124 9.4, Avengers 38 9.0 Green River, Sub-Mariner 29 9.6 and my latest, Champions 1 9.6 Pacific Coast. I am desperately seeking out high grade Avengers 39 to 50 but the prices are getting ridiculous!! A 9.4 Avenger
Now not only is my set currently at 100% completion, but now I also have grades of 9.8 for every single slot in my registry set!
The last two books I needed were 9.8 copies to regular cover and variant cover to #6 of the series. I was always satisfied with having 9.6 SS copies that were both double signed, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to getting 9.8 copies of those issues since they were available online!
As a result of getting these final books in hand and registering them, now not
Well, I haven't updated my journal in over 18mo... so, I guess I'm due.
Well, my last (and 1st) journal entry was back in the fall of 2006... so, I guess I'm well overdue. During that time, my Righteous Rojatt's, Human Fly registry set was brand new and I was eager to share it. In that entry I expound on my "goals" for 2007: finalize my individual issue write-ups , add pictures , find a HG #3 and a #15 for submission. Well, that makes me 50% effective with my goal-making, eh? Well, mayb
You know... trying to balance your life with bills and comics is a hard task to consistently keep up with or even for one to accomplish. Add economic woes of holding down a job in the picture with high food and gas prices... you are stuck between "a rock and a hard place", you know?
So yesterday after coming back from work... I did some number crunching and some intense "outloud one-on-one conversations" of... "How can I pay my bills in two weeks and have enough money for gas and affor
It's not mint, so it probably isn't worth a lot, but...
Okay, it isn't in mint condition. There are some creases around the staples. The back cover shows wear, too. Also, I realize foil isn't popular. But the pages are off white, almost white and that cover...well, just look at it!
I had to put this one in a mylar bag. Maybe I'll get it graded someday. It is, without a doubt, one of my favorite covers in my collection.
You know whats the worst thing about not finding the comics your looking for for the past 2 weeks? Them telling you either you might have to wait for a second printing or not having enough money in your budget to get all your comics. Wait... isnt that a tie?
You would not believe the "heartaches" and "near passed out moments" that almost occurred to me yesterday on my way to my local comic book shop!
First things first though... I ended up going to my local comic book shop not
I finally got the grades on the last group of comics I submitted.
I've been checking 2 times each week and I finally got the news.
The grades are as follows....
Sandman (Gaiman series)#2--9.2
Locke & Key (all first prints) 1-3 are all 9.8
I sent in 2 comics Friday 11 July
Fantastic Four Annual #2 1964
Tales From the Crypt #46
I can't wait to see how long these take.
Hopefully, I'll be able to meet my goal for the year with those 2. I wanted to reach 15,
High grade or Complete set
I do believe that I will be changing how I am trying to collect certain comics. Like take my 30 cent price variant set for example... The only ones I have at the moment are either highest grade or second highest grade in exists minus one I got graded on my own. Now high grade comics are quit expensive and unfortunately with a new kid on the way and with the way the economy is going I can't afford to keep it all going with straight up high grades. So for the time be
Another great addition to my comic registry!!
I am happy to report I just won a great CGC graded 9.6 Batman: Year One Part 2 by Frank Miller on ebay. I should be getting the comic next week sometime and am looking forward to adding it to the registry.
I think parts 2 and 3 feature the best cover artwork ever seen on a comic, and the story line is fantastic throughout as well.
I am very excited to have obtained this great addition, and look forward to adding parts 3 and 4 as well.
Back from CGC!!
I sent off 16 comics from my personal collection and I got the back today. 14 of 16 comics at 9.8 and 2 at 9.6. I sent in 11 variants of Gen 13 #1 and all came back 9.8, but of course there is no place for me to add them in the registry. The other 9.8 are Aphrodite IX preview, Fathom Black & White, and F5 #1 Bikini variant. Overall I am very pleased and it shows that I take excellent care of my collection. I am also very picky as to what goes into my collection, hence
