    Unslabbing the masses

    Well,

It has come down to this.

The collection I have lovingly put together, book by book has has slowly and unsuspectedly created a monster of it's very own, a demon spawn all comic collectors will have to face, the issue of long term storage.

Soon, need to have the boards and bags changed out, as we do with all raw books every 3 years.

    Then there your CGC and PGX books;

The life of a CGC or PGX slabb has come up in the small circles I travel with.

CGC states that books should be "reholdered" every 7 years, to change out the deacid sheets,...the fee: $11.00. Yet one would have to add another $20.00 min to cover transit back and forth. Now, it's $30.00. Add to that the fees originally paid to have the book graded,...Yikes

So, lets look at the 7 year spann at a first time grading of a modern comic 1980 to now.

The basic fees with shipping add about $25.00 to $30.00 to the cost of a book, more if you are dealing with rare HG books. So, for the sake of math let's use the sum of $28.00, divide by 7 years that equals aprox $4.00 per year.

That is not too bad, yet the avg book is slipped into a basic board and bag costing about .20 each, and is swapped out every 3 years, at about .07 per year.

Yikes! that is a lot to think about,...

    Yet, there is more.

Many collector's are going to be face to face with the slabb issue in the next few years. Some collector's have the majority of their collection in slabbs from either CGC or PGX. and at the "reholder" fee along with S/H 10 books would cost ya $300.00, 100 books $3000.00,...and so on.

In thinking of the future, what is going to happen to these "expired" slabbs? Yes, they will clutter the landfills and hopefull will be recycled before that happens.

But, what will happen to the books that are trapped in their plastic like coffins, rotting in their own acid gas?

Here is something to think about, your slabbed books will "expire" and like a skunky beer have to be, replaced, or tossed.

So, owners of these "expired" slabbs will need to sell them adding the burden to the new owner.

Yet, in the future, it has been whispered that these "expired" slabbs will be carefully opened, the old deacid sheets removed and replaced with new ones then the book will be gracefully, and tenderly put into a 2-4 mil Mylar® longterm storage sleeve with thick acid free backer board. The original slabb cert will be in with the book (The date of the books removal from the slabb should be noted on the cert) and these books after being liberaited from their "expired" slabb will be held in collections.

All of us know of the major companies who sell archival products for longterm storage. Their higher end storage products combined cost aprox $3.00 per book for the first 7 years.

After that you will need to then swap out the boards and deacid sheets for new ones at the cost of about $1.50 per book, at todays prices.

This form of long term storage comes from two major dealers, well all know of them and their fine products..

    YET, this pardoned book will.......

Year later, when the time comes, more than likely many years after it's pardon, these books will be traded with the seller noting the third party grade, OR "reholdered" before they are sold, if the seller wishes to gain the highest value for their book.

    TIME MARCHES ON,....and the time to sell comes;

The owner would send the book to a third party grader with the original cert, years from the expiration of the original 7 year life the slabb.

    OR,....

they would rec the "expired" slabb with the book encased, years after the the expiration,...

How will either of these factors effect the regrading and "reholdering" og the book?

Third party grading fans (myself included) have to be quietly hopin' that their slabbed books will be safe in their plastic like holder and continue to sell at a % that will justify the costs of dealing with the soon to be here "expiration" date looming over their heads.

But, face it either way,...the need and costs of storage for your treasures is something that has to be faced and at the end paid for.

The need to sell or store will come into play with the future and the "expiration" date issue as the years go on. This may or may not have an effect on either the third party grading market or the companies who provide the services.

Yet, I have pondered not only these issues but the fact that this hobby is, or can be, an investment.

It will be interesting to see how collectors' will deal with this fate, and how the hobby reacts.

Hope I am around to see it.

    T.

    2 Weeks at "Graded"

3 weeks at "verified" & 2 weeks (so far) at "graded". So much for 20 business days - unless there was a convention last month. At any rate, just trying to get a realistic turnaround time. Five weeks and counting so far.

As to my previous journal, I had sent 16 comics to be graded, which were also signed at the NY Comicon on feb.

when I received them, I was so exited that they were finally here, opened the box and the first thing I saw was a 7.5 which I was very disappointed. there was also some 8.0,8.5,9.0,9.4,9.6,9.8.

what I should have done was take pictures of every corner possible, or any visible mishap. When I was going through my collection I checked the comics thoroughly. but I have no evidence that some of my comics had bent corners, or anything else. I will be posting pictures of the graded comics with some comments on them. once I receive the notes from CGC for the errors that were found on my comics starting with the 7.5.

I'm sending in my first submissions to CGC. ASM 20, 24 and 32

Hoping that I get a decent grade on these. I haven't taken them out of the mylar in years and they have been stored out of all light, so we'll see. Looking forward to seeing the final grading!

  4. any aussie collectors out there?

hi everyone, im looking for some aussie collectors to chat with.

i dont know anyone around my town that collect comics, let alone involved with CGC, so im throwing it out there! talk to me people!?

  5. What to send next?

Now that I've spent my free Express coupons, I'm going through the rest of my collection to try and decide what to submit next....All of these books of course, will all be submitted under Modern; hell my first submissions weren't worth being graded under the *free* Express coupons...The 3 of them only totaled $150 before grading, I think.

My collection isn't all that rare or impressive, but I enjoy it, and I have some books I'm proud of...I don't think I have anything worth more than $300, though, and that's already finished and graded.

But anyways, below is my list of possible candidates. I went through my long boxes, and I think these are all of my highest worth books. These are all the books I would wishfully thinking get graded over the next year; not in my next submission. I am but a humble warehouse flunky :-D. But I digress, onto the list:

    Astonishing X-Men (Vol 3) #1 - Variant Edition Gabriele Dell'Otto Cover

Hulk (Vol 2) #6 - Variant Edition Michael Turner Cover

New Avengers #3 - Variant Edition Oliver Coipel Cover (Wolverine)

New Avengers #4 - Variant Edition Jim Cheung Cover (Ronin/Iron Man)

New Avengers #5 - Variant Edition Adi Granov Cover (Cage/Spider-Woman)

New Avengers #6 - Variant Edition Bryan Hitch Cover (Iron Man/Captain America)

    Uncanny X-Men #157

    Uncanny X-Men #158

    Uncanny X-Men #159

Uncanny X-Men #500 - Variant Edition Terry Dodson 1:30 Color Cover

Uncanny X-Men #505 - Variant Edition Greg Land 1:10 "Villain" Cover

Wolverine (Vol 2) #131 - Recalled Racial Slur Edition (initial release, I didn't go searching for it, and I never knew it was recalled until years later as I had read it in a stupor back in college while exhausted from studying, and didn't realize I had read a racial slur)

Wolverine (Vol 2) $145 - Silver Foil Cover signed by Erik Larsen (which unfortunately will get "Qualified" since CGC doesn't accept photos for evidence; oh well - my own fault :-D )

Wolverine (Vol 3) #26 - Variant Edition Marc Silvestri 1:15 Cover

Wolverine (Vol 3) #27 - Variant Edition Joe Quesada 1:20 Cover

X-Men (Vol 2) #200 - Variant Edition Humberto Ramos Wraparound Cover

    X-Men (Vol 2) #207 - Variant Edition Jim Cheung 1:10 Cover

X-Men: Deadly Genesis #1 - Variant Edition Wolverine on fire cover

Young X-Men #1 - Variant Edition Brandon Peterson 1:20 "Red Bricks" Cover

I entered my first graded comic yesterday.

I have always referred to my wife as "Wonder Woman", even before we started dating some 20 years ago. I've also always liked to watch the Wonder Woman tv show when it was on. Though I have never been a real comic reader, I decided to persue this comic as my entry way into CGC. I entered a 9.8 copy of the 2006 edition of issue #21 in my registry yesterday. I now have two more graded issues on the way and have purchased dozens of raw books for my collection, hopefully at some point to send in for grading.

I'm stunned at the going price for some of these comics. I saw a CGC 8.0 copy of the first issue (#1) from the first run sell for $24,000 the other day. I don't even have graded coins that will sell for that much!

Anyway, I've made the leap. Let's just see how far I can jump.

  7. Best Champions set EVER

Well i finally did it, after 2 and a half years of wheeling and dealing I completed the finest set in the world of Marvel's Champions series from the Bronze Age. It feels somewhat bittersweet because this mission has been consuming my collecting for a while and now I don't know what to do next...

You can check out the set with descriptions & pics.

I have many interest, but comic art is the one that I treasure the most. I have something from every collection of comics read from the 1950's to Present day

    Super Duper Journal Entry.

    Dear journal,

It has been a long time since my last entry....

Oh, wait a minute, I don't keep journal entries. Never have.

And if you are reading this, shame on you, reading other peoples journals. I thought I could trust you to stay out of my computer.

If you are still reading this, the proper authorities have been contacted and dispatched to your residence.

Bet ya think twice about snooping in other peoples journals now huh?

and that may ring a bell to any one who has bid on any comics books or art work recently on Heritage Comics because I've have already sold most of my comic book collection on there site ( there is an auction that will end tonight which has not yet made my break even point of $25 which includes CGC grading on everything .. )

and so if you are able to sign on to their website and bid on anything that you make want that would be great..

And the way that you find my items is to go to the Heritage website click on the comic link and when you do the search enter in my handle Fantastic Frank, it must be with a space in the search all descriptions and you will find my books, make sure however if you do that ine and that if you truly want a book from my collection that you check in their desciption to see if its states from the Fantastic Frank collection because as you know that the words Fantastic Frank while are mine to use that it may pick up some one else use of the words,

    Fantastic Frank more later..

    Looking for silver!!!

    Hello Everyone,

I am very interested in all superhero titles published by Marvel and DC comics. If you are selling on e-bay or outright please do not hesitate to contact me. Best regards, Dan O.

  9. The grading is done.

Well, it took almost a month before the CGC got to grading my comics and let me tell you that was a very long month. Since these were my first ones the anticipation was building every week I would check on the status and there they were sitting in the verified status. Finally, the grading part was done this week and I do say for my first ones I did good.

The comics I sent were a set that I remember reading when they came out and that I had forgot about until just recently. The series is Shogun Warriors and it only lasted 20 issues. This was a series that I wished they would have kept going, but for unknown reasons they stopped. I decided it was time to get a good set that I could pass on to my sons. After looking around and trying to see what was out there, I purchased 12 issues from someone that had said they had been put in storage when they first came out and have never been circulated. I was a little skeptic, but believed these could be in good condition and paid a little more than what most people would for raw comics. When I recieved them I could tell that they were in very good condition and decided not to open them or anything, just send them off to get graded.

Well, the initial grading is done and if these grades are finalized, I couldn't be more happier, especially since these are my first ones ever to get graded. I recieved 4-9.8's, 7-9.6's and one 9.4 and Issue #1 is one of the 9.8's. I was very surprised and delighted, because I have never seen a 9.8 or even a 9.0 in person, so I would say for my first comics I think I did very well.

Now I have to wait until they get shipped so I can see them for the first time with their new covers. I know some people say that its best to buy comics already graded, because it's so hard to tell the condition, but here is one instance that buying raw actually worked in my favor.

Now, if I can only remember the guy I bought these from so I can get more. Thanks for letting me share my expereince.

    Marc

Richie Rich Richies #50 CGC 9.6, Richie Rich Dollars and Cents #66 CGC 9.6

I bought both of these issues off someone on E-Bay. I thought they were in very good shape, so I sent them in to CGC and was completely shocked when they both came back 9.6's!! Thats what a Modern Comic would get right off the shelf!!!! These Comics are both over 20 years old. The main reason I'm writing this is to just say "You can find great comics on E-Bay!" The person who was selling these had FULL PAGE SCANS, so it was easy to see the condition the comics were in. I'm no expert at grading, but its amazing to see what some people consider Near Mint or even Very Fine!

  10. Arriving earlier this month, the final piece to the puzzle... my graded Human Fly #15!

As mentioned in my previous journal entry, after a long search I finally found a solid-looking Human Fly #15 for my "Righteous Rojatt's set" which appeared ripe for slabbing. As mentioned previously, the Toronto Paradise-Con once again rolled into town and north of the boarder I headed, 9 raw books in tow, including the #15. I certainly didn't want to set my expectations too high, but was moderately hoping for another CGC 9.4, similar to my previous #3 submission. Upon it being slabbed, that #15 would be the ONLY (and obviously highest) graded copy and will complete my "Righteous Rojatt's set" 100%!

Well, recently those submissions finally returned from CGC! Upon tearing through the well-packaged bundle, I finally revealed the linchpin of my set... my Human Fly #15, in a 9.2 (NM-) grade with Off-White/White Pages. Of course, I was hoping for at least a 9.4, but the #15 is arguably the most difficult one to find in high-grade with its black cover. Certainly as with most submissions, there are some disappointments, but for the most part I was very pleased with my overall results. In fact, I was more surprized with the results of some of my OTHER submissions from that batch, scoring 2 Bronze-Age 9.8's and 2 very nice 9.6's from the era too!

With that, collecting friends, I conclude this recent tale... seeing my Human Fly set now 100% complete. Naturally, I'll continue to expand and upgrade this set when possible, but for now I'm content with the final results. Shortly, I'm hopeful to add photos and perhaps tweak my individual descriptions a bit.

Coincedently, here are the other results of my recent submission:

    Black Goliath #3 = 9.2, OW/W

    Black Lightning #1 = 9.4, OW/W

    Green Lantern, Vol.3 #1 = 9.6, WP

Further Adventures of Indiana Jones #1 = 9.4, WP

    Kull #22 = 9.8, OW/W

    Nova #1 = 9.6, OW/W

    Ragman #1 = 9.4, OW/W

    She-Hulk #1 = 9.8, OW/W

Not too bad, for only my 2nd submission! What will I try next time... hmmm?

Thanks again for looking and allowing me to share my addiction with y'all!

  11. So maybe I have been a little lazy and probably have no excuse for not providing a update on my collection as of late!

    Hiyo!

Whoa! Look at the distance in time since my last post of update of my ever growing collection of comics! Maybe a little too big of a time gap!? Well I think of it as... a tough, third and long situation (Thats Football-lingo for you clueless comic readers!) and I need to convert now and not later, because stretching this to fourth-down situation... is not up for discussion.

... and with that said lets try and fill in the gap or make the yards needed for the first down, shall we?

    So lets see...

Last journal post was on 13th of September, and so I should probably tell you of my hunt for, All-Star Batman and Robin and the Boy Wonder #10(the recalled mis-printed varient version), because not only was it completely hard to track down, but many of them was selling for $100+, whether in bundles with the regular non-varient or by just by itself... on eBay! After not giving up, I finally able to acquire someone selling a perfect near-mint condition from a collector on the Collector Society's Message Boards and not only did my All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder #10 (Regular non-varient) came in the mail perfect this past Saturday on the 20th of September, but the varient verson done by Frank Quietly, came in on the 25th of Spetember!

So here goes an update as relate to purchases ($69.64)to this past last week new releases on the 17th of September at my local comic book shop:

    Action Comics

    (DC) (#869 of On-going series)

    Titans

    (DC 2008) (#5 of On-going series)

    Trinity

    (DC 2008) (#16 of On-going series)

Yeah I know... my insufficiently_thoughtful_person-self walked out there not realizing til I got home and online that... I am missing BatGirl #3 and Batman and the OutSiders #10! So I decided to try out a different store since I was looking to pick up all of books and varients for All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder and All-Star Superman issues, because my regular local comic book shop did not have all the issues!

    On the 20th of September...

I went to this other comic book shop looking for any/all books and/or varients pertaining to All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder.

I got off work kind-of early (10AM early) and had to wait in the parking-lot for the store to open at 12PM... so I read my paperback copy of, Stephen King's The Stand, in the car. When the store finally opened up I saw the the store only had All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder #2 (Varient, Frank Miller), but I did not pick it up, because it was pretty beat-up. I did though after looking around the spectacular store, walked out spending $62.98 on the following...

    BatGirl

    (DC 2008) (#3 of 6 Issue On-going Mini-series)

    Batman and the OutSiders

    (DC 2007-2008) (#10 of On-going series)

    Justice League of America

    (DC 2006-2008) (#14-18 of On-going series)

Now since this past Wednesday on the 24th of September was new releases... lets update you on my recent purchases ($62.92) from my local comic book shop on the following...

    (DC 2005-2008) (#10 (+ Varient) of 12 Issue On-going Mini-series)

    (DC 2008) (#3 of On-going series)

Help on what to send, any suggestions?

I have just joined CGC and I wish to send off a few of my comics I have in my collection, but I'm unsure if they will be worth it.

These are the following comics that might make up my main 3,

Amazing Spiderman 129 - first Punisher, I paid $170 for this example, not 100% of what it will achieve grading wise.

New Mutants 98 - First Deadpool, I paid $105 for this copy from a comic shop - they had there own grading system and they stated it was GEM MINT - I think I might get 9.8 maxium for it but if it goes to 9.9 I will be very happy.

I'm in 2 minds of what to send of my other comics, I have Amazing Spiderman 120 - Paid $60 Got this one just because it relates to my birthday.

Amazing Spiderman 36 WTC issue, already got one graded 9.8, should make 9.8

Learn about how I started into comics and my gradual move to specifically collecting DC war comics.

I'm not exactly sure how old I was when I started collecting comic books, but I do remember where I it all began. My dad owned a coin shop and next door was a used book store. They used to sell old comic books and I would go there whenever I had some money and buy what I thought was neat. I loved DC horror and mystery, anything 10 cent or 12 cent covers, and DC war. The Flash, and the Incredible Hulk were also some of my favourites, but what really captivated me was Sgt. Rock and the Unknown Soldier. Those 2 guys had the greatest stories and fabulous art, and kept a kid like me just always wanting more. I was probably also 8 years old when I started collecting. In 1994-95 when Chris Pedrin put out his Big Five Information Guide, I was hooked. This book was all about DC war and I just stumbled on a gold mine! I remember reading this and re-reading this guide over and over again. In fact, I can still read it again and enjoy it just as much as I did the first time. I remember Chris mentioning that these books were tough in grade at VF or above, and I noted his price guide portion. He said that the books were truly undervalued, and I agreed with him. Immediately after that book came out, I was going to the local shops and traveling to conventions looking for deals. I was fortunate because I had just received a small inheritance and was able to purchase quite a lot of books. I've still got many of these in their original bags with the prices I paid on them. OFF #79 VF/NM $1.25, OFF #80 NM- $2.25, etc... I tried to buy whatever I could afford, and I stayed away from the dinosaur issues. They were very pricey back then, and you know what, they haven't increased much at all since 1995. I wish that I could have bought more of these great books instead of buying 200 copies of X-Men #1 deluxe edition. doh! I had a goal, way back when to complete the whole Big Five, and I wanted them in nice grade as well. It was extremely tough finding these books in grade and I realized that fairly early on, so I decided to not be so picky with grades. If I find a copy, and I can afford it, pick it up. As you may remember, I finally completed my run in December of 2007, and accomplishment that I am very proud of. I'm currently working on my second run, which is probably borderline insane. :insane: Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :sumo:

    avengers 502

Finally got me another Avengers CGC. Issue 502 coming in at 9.8 Not a bad purchase got it fairly cheap like the other. I am really surprised that I have been getting the avengers so quickly rather than Sgt. Rock lol. Although I did win a CGC Sgt. Rock the other day so am waiting for that to come in the mail. Looking forward to that as well as a couple more avengers, go figure......

    "BIGGER BETTER FASTER MORE!"

Stop the Registry, I want to get off. I have been addicted to the Registry. I know it. As a collecting resource it holds no equal, but it has turned into something else entirely. The old adage of, "BIGGER BETTER FASTER MORE!" comes to mind. Add this. Move that. This is right. That is wrong. Enough is enough. It isn't fun anymore. I am not interested in a competition. I am not interested in an award. It isn't supposed to be a chore. I am waiting for the day when I can create my own sets. That is when I will enjoy the registry again. End of rant.

  12. Well, it took a lot longer than I thought it would, but I've done it! I've bagged/boarded all my old Incredible Hulk books. I now have a clearer sense of my inventory...

It took a lot longer than I thought it would. Given the fact that I physical limitations, the task probably took longer for me than it would for anyone else. Also, I was taking the time to scan the covers into my PC as I bagged/boarded, which slowed things down. This became too tedious, however. In the interest of finishing the job, I forwent the scanning step.

I had told a few people (on the message boards here, for example) that I estimated that I had over 200 comics that needed to be properly bagged/boarded. Okay, I exaggerated. (At least I?m man enough to admit it!) I guess the number seemed a lot higher to me at first. Anyway, here?s the list of what I have...

    MARVEL COMICS

    Incredible Hulk:

    #109, #110, #115

    #263, #279-308, #310-377*, #380-383, #385-391, #393-394

    * Note: I have a number of duplicates issues within that sequence of issues

    Hulk Annuals:

    #11-13, #15, #16

    Incredible Hulk vs. Wolverine:

    #1 (80s reprint)

    Secret Wars:

    #1, #2, #3 (2 copies), #4 (2 copies), #5, #6, #7, #8 (2 copies), #9, #10, #11 (2 copies), #12

    DC COMICS:

    OMAC:

    #1

    Dingbats:

    #6

    Weird Mystery Tales:

    #23

    PREZ- First Teen President:

    #1

    Forever People:

    #7, #8

Total number of re-bagged/boarded books: 151

Although not boarded, all these issues were bagged. However, I guess as a kid I was lazy at times and did not tape shut some of the bags. It is surprising how much difference a little piece of tape means. For a few of the issues that were bagged but NOT taped shut, the covers are in fine shape but the pages had yellowed.

It goes without saying that the later issues are in the best condition. Although I am a big time novice at grading, I would say, for the vast majority of books I went through, most are in FINE condition, with a few exceeding that and a few falling below that. I was quite surprised at times to find that some issues (#279, for example) had a clean crisp front and back covers as well as white pages! Others had decent pages (cream?) but the covers were worn. (I used to take some of the comics to HS. Hey, what did I know?) Overall, I was pleased with the majority of the condition of the books. I was happy to see I had the full set of McFarlane?s Hulk run, as well as all the Mr. Fixit issues.

There are, as you can see, a few breaks in the numbers. I hope to (over time) fill in a few of the holes. I might be too big a job to try and collect all the issues that fall prior to #279. I will probably stick with filling in the small gaps in the numbers that come later.

Funny thing ? I am probably still not done. I think I have more issues somewhere in the house. I have to go looking around. For now at least, I can claim I?ve reached at least one of my goals ? to transfer all my old (HULK) comics from old bags to new bags/boards. A few books (all of Secret Wars, for example) I put in mylar bags. They may not be in NM condition but I?d like to keep them in at least in the FINE condition they are in now.

I?ve also been adding to my collection. I?ve purchased a few new comics. I?m up-to-date with the new (Red) Hulk issues. I?ve also purchased What If?Planet Hulk, Transformers Megatron ORIGIN (sketch cover) #1, SKAAR #1 (variant cover), and World War Hulk (variants) #1-5. I?m thinking about starting a collection of all #1?s. (Hey, it could be fun!)

I realize (to some of you) my collection may seem modest at best. Hey, I had to start somewhere. Honestly, I think I'd like to keep it relatively small. I?d like to keep it at a level I can manage.

Lastly, I want to thank all of you who help me get this far. Much THANKS!!!

  13. Another great addition to my comic registry!!

I am happy to report I just won a great CGC graded 9.6 Batman: Year One Part 2 by Frank Miller on ebay. I should be getting the comic next week sometime and am looking forward to adding it to the registry.

I think parts 2 and 3 feature the best cover artwork ever seen on a comic, and the story line is fantastic throughout as well.

I am very excited to have obtained this great addition, and look forward to adding parts 3 and 4 as well.

See you all at "The Dark Knight" in IMAX next week!!
