End Of The Adams Era At DC

Won this at the recent Comic Link auction. Quite the cover by famous horror artist Bernie Wrightson. But this book happens to be pretty much the last of Neal Adams' interior artwork at DC. A career that started with the company in 1967, Adams would end up redefining Batman, Green Lantern/Green Arrow, and make Deadman his own. After this book, the only interior work Adams did for DC was the Superman vs. Muhammad Ali treasury edition in 1978. After that it would be decades before his return to DC.

Year End Comments

Looks like I'm done with purchases for this year. Acquired 17 books for 2018, much less than the previous year, when I bought 38 altogether. But this year it was a matter of quality over quantity, as I picked up many key books. And nothing under 9.2. So, I'll return here next year. Happy Holidays everyone!

My First Qualified

Adams Does Batman/Enemy Ace Picked this one up one ebay. Kind of hesitant at first, but eventually I gave in. It was listed at a buy it now price for just over $100. A beautiful book, detached top staple notwithstanding. And a pedigree to boot. I figure a 9.4 CGC universal would cost an arm and a leg, so I bit my lip and committed. Plus, this has to be one of the most sought after issues by Neal Adams among his Detective books. Enjoy. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here

Another Nice SS Acquired

Adams Deadman Rules Bought this beauty on ebay, making it my first purchase for 2014. And I got it for a great price too! In my recent journal on the Tomahawk 116 I bought, I mentioned that the covers on that title may be the best that Neal Adams has ever done. But the case certainly can be made for his SA Deadman run also. Actually, I think this cover is just so-so. There are some other SA covers more stunning, particularly 207 and 214. Enjoy. Brawling Vision

Adams Avengers Just won this in the ComicLink auction. Might very well be the best Neal Adams Marvel cover. A striking depiction of the Vision beating the out of a skrull. If you're familiar with the story, then you know that the awesome android is going berserk because his beloved Wanda is being held captive by the skrulls. Fortunately for the alien, Thor and Iron Man are able to restrain Vision. A signature copy to boot, signed by Adams and Stan Lee. Enjoy. To see old comments for this

Missed Out On Another Gem

AAAARRRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!! The holy grail on my want list, Creepy 14, was on sale on ebay up until today. It was an eight day listing for this issue in CGC 9.2 with white pages beginning yesterday. Unfortunately, I'm about broke at the moment and my credit cards are maxed out. I had hoped that the book would go unnoticed for its eight day tenure, but no such luck. Sold sometime today in the afternoon. It has been ages since this particular issue has been on the market in CGC. Just how long? The

Armageddon Now!

Finally Got Around To Another X-Men Book Won this one also in the latest Comiclink auction. The first issue to feature artwork by John Byrne. Not a bad cover, I guess. Gotta love that mid-1970s X-Men points/dollar ratio. This one is worth 420 points, five times the dollar amount I won it for. Enjoy. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Adams Auction Win #3

Nice Superboy Scene Here's the final book from the auction. Just when I thought I'd seen every great Adams cover, another one pops up that I'm unfamiliar with. This is actually the first Superboy comic that I've bought since I began collecting again way back in 2002. Just awestruck by Neal's detail on this cover. Enjoy. Third Appearance Of New X-Men

Lots Of Registry Points Here Finally paid for this book which I won in the last Pedigree Comics auction. Cover's okay, never was a fan of Gil Kane. Totalling 1750 points on the registry, it is now my highest valued book as far as points go. And the points/dollar ratio turned out great, as the 1750 is almost four times the amount I paid in dollars. Enjoy. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Lois Lane

Neal's Other Romance Books Returning to the journals today after a lengthy absence. Picked this one up on ebay and there is nothing romantic about this catfight cover! Most of the covers for this title depicted some goofy scenario, regardless of who was doing the writing and art. But of the 15 covers done by Neal Adams, there are about four or five that stand out. I plan on picking up a few more. And they are pretty hard to come by slabbed, as you will notice if you check the CGC census. Just

Mar-Vell In Marvel Super-Heroes

Sorry Silverage Collector Featured here is MSH 13, Captain Marvel's second appearance. I'm actually bidding on this book right now. My apologies to Silverage Collector because I've beaten him to the punch. (Alluding to the journal just prior to this one.) For some reason I just love this cover. It's a beautiful copy, date stamp notwithstanding. Also features the first appearance of Carol Danvers, although it does not state that on the CGC label. Quite difficult to find in such a high grade. Well, here's the first purchase for 2019. Just got this on ebay, where my best offer was accepted. One of the more difficult WWs to find in high grade. Happy New Year!

Adams Tomahawks - Got 'Em All!

At Last.....After Six Years And I'm the first collector on the registry to do so. A feeling of satisfaction, to say the least, upon completing the goal of acquiring all of these books in high grade. And this last one is a Mass. pedigree to boot. And like all the Tomahawk covers by Neal Adams, it's a stunner. Enjoy. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. High Grade Conan Acquired

Adams Inking Not Noted Won this during the ongoing Comic Link auction. Highest graded, obviously. On the CGC label, Neal Adams is not listed for his inking done on this issue. Don`t ask me why. Maybe due to the fact that Adams only partially inked. Anyways, a nice win nonetheless for the price I won it for. Enjoy. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. One More Adams Lois Book

Soon To Be Slabbed Purchased this from Comic Connect just recently. Love the green cover here, my favorite of Neal's work on this title. Sold to me as a 9.0, hoping that CGC sees fit to give it the same. Was unable to find a high grade slabbed copy anywhere. Lois has Superman backed into quite a corner. Marry you, Lois? No worries! The Worth Of Comic Books According To Dealers?

In Response To SW3D One way to gauge the worth of certain books is obviously to go on the net and see what the established dealers sell them for. But here's where things get bizarre. Let's take Witching Hour 1 from 1969, CGC graded 9.4. A book that also happens to be on my want list. One rather famous comic dealership in NYC is asking $895 for a 9.4 with ow/w pages. Another, less known dealer on the internet is asking $324.95 for the same CGC grade with white pages. Now, which copy do you thin

Neal's Debut

Of All Titles!?! Up for bid on ebay and ending today at 9 p.m. is Archie's Joke Book 44. This happens to be Neal Adams' first pro work, dated January, 1960. A CGC 7.5 with crm/ow pages. A historic issue, considering how far Mr. Adams has come. And he was only 18 at the time he did this work. Included is a scan. Enjoy. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Heart Throbs 120

Intense Adams Cover Finally managed to get this one on ebay. Last time I checked there were only five copies on the CGC census. Actually a combined effort here, with the cover art being credited to Jay Scott Pike along with Adams. Well, it's got Neal's look all over it, so it's good enough for me. Enjoy. O'Neil And Adams At Their Best

Just Say No To Drugs Just won this during the current Comiclink auction. An incredible story that continues onto GL/GA 86. This storyline might very well be the summit of the O'Neil/Adams work during this run. And the cover is awe-inspiring, to say the least. If only the comic book covers of today were this good! I think the drug issue was covered a few months earlier by Marvel in Spider-Man 96-98, but this is the story that gets down to the nitty-gritty. Enjoy. To see old comments for th

Star Reach

Provocative Cover By Adams Picked this one up recently on Comiclink. A cool, sexy cover by Neal Adams on this obscure title. Just how obscure? Well, the registry does not even allocate points to these books. I think this was a stab at adult themed stories outside the jurisdiction of the comics code authority, like the Warren magazines. Enjoy. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Adams Auction Win #2

One of Neal's Finest The second book from the comic link auction. Awesome Spectre cover with Wildcat in the foreground. And it's always nice to get the 9.8! My winning bid was somewhat lower than what you would usually pay for this book in 9.8. Gotta love those c-link auctions! Be back with the final journal on the last book I'm bidding on. Enjoy. Neal's Batman At War

Joe Kubert.........Or Is It Adams? A fine b&b cover here by Neal Adams. Picked this one up recently from Comiclink. As if it wasn't enough that Adams art was brilliant, he could also mimic the art of other comic book legends. Here he does his best Joe Kubert imitation and if you look at his name in the bottom left hand corner, he's even written it the same way Kubert does. Sold the 9.0 I originally had and upgraded to this 9.4 Rocky Mountain pedigree. Enjoy. To see old comments for th

Lane Again

My Second Adams Lois book Bought this one from fellow registry member dover. A pretty good representation of the early work by Neal Adams on DC covers. At this time, his covers were very much science fiction themed, as opposed to the social commentary that would come later in his work. Now the only Lois Lane book I want is issue 85. Enjoy. Bob Hope 108

Just won this in the Comic Link auction. Extremely hard to find in high grade due to the dark green cover. As a matter of fact, there are only five copies on the CGC census. And only a single 9.4 has been graded higher than this one. This replaces the 7.0 slabbed copy that I've had for the last 15 years. Artwork by Neal Adams, who began his career at DC doing the humor titles. Here we have Bob joining a biker gang calling themselves.....The Ghost Riders? Hmmm. Predates Marvel's Johnny Blaze

GL 82

Picked up this one from a local dealer. Another book that I've reacquired, having sold my copy last year due to the pandemic while trying to avoid falling behind on the bills. From the glorious Neal Adams run on this title. This issue is one of the few that deals with a horror storyline instead of the social commentary that made this run by Adams and O'Neil famous. Enjoy.
