Bronze Horror is the Bomb, Baby!

Bronze Age Horror (mainly provided from DC) is my favorite genre, as it naturally stemmed from my fascination with classic Horror movies. It's a Friday night. I pour butter into a pan and then some popcorn?(I didn't have a microwave yet). I shiver in anticipation as I hear the host of my favorite weekly show called Creature Feature, which showcases horror movies from the classics in the 1930s up to B-type thrillers in the 1970s. My fascination with horror and mystery origins can be found in

CGC Best in Presentation House of Mystery

Recognition for a great bronze age horror set. It's amazing that after 4+ years i've still not completed the set, although I would be real close were it not due to some stiff competition. I'd like to take a moment and thank those that I've met here and been able to share my love for the genre...it definitely makes it more fun to share. Hopefully you guys can help me close the gap on missing issues so I can wrap the series up...I'd love to branch out in other areas but I'm the kind of guy tha

The Horror Comic Market: One Collector's Thoughts

Is there a struggle for horror comics to maintain its stellar selling records? I've been collecting horror comics from a high grade perspective since 2001, and I've seen a lot of interesting things in the past few years. First, when I started collecting, these books were for the most part ignored by the high grade collecting community. The introduction of CGC helped to bring collectors (like myself) to collect high grade copies of our favorite horror titles, but over the years I've noticed s

Weird War Tales

The CGC Registry Expansion of my favorite war title. I was recently pleasently surprised when CGC expanded the Weird War Tales registry set to include all issues. The title provided a lot of fun reading for me growing up, and now I'm concentrating on a high grade run of the series. Weird War Tales is my favorite war title as it blends in traditional horror elements with another very real horror: war. The occassional book length novels, killer Kubert and early Dominguez covers, and the intern

Unexpected #118

Hard to find issue in high grade...very nice price. A great copy of Unexpected #118 CGC 9.4 White Pages went for a little over $150 on eBay, which I find amazing considering that many high grade collectors have been needing this issue and have complained on its difficulty in high grade. It also sports a very nice Neal Adams cover in a difficult black cover. Congratulations to the winner, because he got a great deal. I've attached a pic of my copy, a 9.6 Oakland. unexpected

House of Secrets #81

One of my top horror grails obtained It's been no secret (no pun intended) that a fellow horror collector was selling off his collection in recent months. I've been drooling over his House of Secrets #81 CGC 9.4 Pacific Coast copy for years, as I think its the best example we have to date. On the boards, we have looked over several 9.4s (there is another Pacific Coast 9.4) and all have more defects than what I prefer in a 9.4. This copy has only two noticeable defects-the upper left has a ve

Witching Hour

Bewitched with new Witching Hour additions. Well, after four years of collecting this title, I moved from a paltry 45% to roughtly 75% with the acquisition of a collection from a fellow horror collector. It looks like this title is becoming more challenging than I initially thought...but I hope to have this being more or less wrapped up in a couple of years. Happy Haunting! Sterling

My Collecting Completion Journal: Updates

Current Status on my comic sets. Snapshot: 2/28/09 Well, it's been a slow go since my last update. Probably the biggest movement has been a 2,000 increase in my HOM set (with only a 4% improvement towards completion) and a BIG jump on my Ghosts set (78% to 91% completion) and Witching Hour set (70% to 83% completion). Phantom Stranger (2nd) 5,300 points 61% completion Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion 4,230 points 93% completion Journey into Mystery (2nd) 1,230 points 84% com

How did I start collecting Moderns?

Bronze Age collector gets sucked into great Zombie series. A few years ago, I admit...I collected all of the Ultimate titles...but I didn't really enjoy or even read the titles. This time...it's different. Thanks to the CGC Boards, I've been sucked into a popular series of Zombie survival. With all of the Zombie craze lately, you might think I'm referring to Marvel Zombies or some of the other short lived mini series. Nope, I'm talking about The Walking Dead... In short, I purchased the TP

Cleaning up my Registry Sets

Keeping my sets in tip top order! I will be busy modifying my registry text and updating pictures with my new scan technique. I'm not sure I'll be done before the CGC Registry Award judging begins, but it will be fun nonetheless. If anyone has any issue I'm missing or in higher grade, please contact me for potential purchase. Thanks! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Ghosts Receives Facelift

Upgrades and registry set fine tuning I've recently upgraded many issues on my Ghosts registry set. Now only 5 issues remain: 1 (I sold my 9.4 because I want a 9.6 or better), 47, 50 (upgrade my 9.2), 57, 81. I've recently uploaded all images to the registry set and made my descriptions easier to read. Hoping 2013 will be the year I can close this one out!
