About this journal

Well since the old journal format is gone I guess I'll try the new format. Right away I'm having issues...can't seem to fix the position of the picture, even though it appears correctly before uploading. Sigh. Anyway, thanks to dreamtoreal1 for this beauty. Excited to have ronnylama press it and get Claremont sign it at ECCC in March. Hoping for a 9.2 or better, but you never know sometimes. Hope everyone has a great 2018!

Til next time...

Year in Review, or No Comics in 2011

It?s been a great year, but? I figure with it being December and all, it?s a good time to reflect on the year from a collecting standpoint. I?ve had some success in adding books that I really really wanted, and I had to let a few go in order to help pay for them, but I have no regrets (other than paying too much in the first place for the books I sold at much less than cost). So let?s take a look and see which CGC books I was able to add to my collection this year? 02/08/2010 Power-man and I

WonderCon and beyond

It's been a BUSY week! There is a lot to tell in one journal to describe the events of this past week so I'll have to condense it for you as best I can... Wednesday At 3:00am the family and I drove from AZ and arrived in Anaheim, CA at 9:00am. We parked at the hotel, took a shuttle to iHOP and grabbed breakfast. After breakfast we walked across the street, spent all day and night at Disneyland, then headed back to the hotel. Feet and legs were already feeling it, but we covered a lot of

WonderCon Anaheim 2013

I managed to find a few things... Had a great trip. I bought a Saturday ticket, spent several hours at the Con, met a fellow board member...lpersky, it was GREAT to meet you in person my friend! My son enjoyed the Deadpool books and Im looking forward to reading the Cable and XForce series. I wish you all the best with PDot Comics and hope to see you at a future Con. I found some other books I was looking for...Marvel Fanfare 1 thru 4, Fear 20...supposedly there is an Xmen appearance, I do

Why not?

Since I'm here... So I just "happen" to be in town. Decided to take the family to Disneyland for the weekend. What's that, WonderCon is happening? Well, sure as long as I'm here I really would like to go (wink)! I'll let you know if I find any must haves for the collection. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Where are they now?

The original X-men... I read this excerpt from a recent journal posted by wardevil0... I progressed into the Marvel Universe at about the time of Secret Wars, and gravitated heavily toward the XBooks. I kept this up for about ten years, but by 1995 had quit comics completely. In mid 2001, the revitalization of Marvel with JMS on Amazing Spiderman, Grant Morrison on New XMen, and Joe Casey on Uncanny XMen brought me back. Since then, Ive transitioned fully to DC for new books. I just don't fe

What if you could only keep 10 comics?

If you had to go through your collection? ?and choose just 10 comics to keep, getting rid of ALL the others, which would YOU keep? I know, I know, a very difficult decision, but if your house is burning down and you?ve got to grab and go (after caring for your family and pets of course), which 10 books would you choose? I?m not a big fan of the ?What if? series, but it?s kind of cool to think about the concept. For me, this is the list of top 10 books I own that I could NEVER see myself par

What happened to the X-men? (Part 1)

The time between teams (Part 1 of 2)? I really enjoy collecting high grade X-men appearances from the Bronze Age during the time when the X-men did not have a title of their own. It?s cool to see what our favorite heroes (and villains) were up to between the last issue with the old team, X-men #66 (03/1970), and the first issue featuring the new team, X-men 94 (08/1975). Check out this special announcement from Stan (Lee), Roy (Thomas) and Neal (Adams) at the conclusion of X-men #66? ?Thi

What happened to the X-men (Part 2)?

The time between teams (Part 2 of 2)? So what were the X-men doing after their own title ended in 03/1970? Searching for the Angel! This is their story?X-men #62, X-men #63, Avengers #110, Avengers #111, Hulk #172, Captain America #173, Captain America #174 and Captain America #175. SPOILER ALERT! If you don?t want to know how this story unfolds then stop reading now, go pick up the issues above and read ?em for yourself pilgrim (you?ll be glad you did)! 10/1969 X-men #62: the Angel?s life

What do you do with your books?

Storage and display. I love my collection and it?s great to be able to view scans of all my books in the registry, but it?s not the same as seeing the actual comics in person. I?m curious what other people do with their collections. Some collectors out there have hundreds of books. Do all these books just get stored in comic boxes where they gather dust (figuratively), or do they get displayed somehow so they can be appreciated? Personally I like to display four books at a time (on my dresser)

surfer99

surfer99

What are your rarest books?

Always great to find what you're looking for... I was admiring my copy of Marvel Team-up 4 CGC 9.6 yesterday that I have framed and hanging in my room. Its good to appreciate what you have and I don't think we do that often enough as collectors. This is one of the most treasured books in my collection of Xmen appearances. It got me thinking about how hard it was to find that particular issue, and how gratifying it was to finally own it. For me, those are the triumphs in my collecting journey t

What are you reading?

Comics new and old... Its been awhile since I wrote a journal so I figured Id share what is and isnt on my reading agenda...both new books and old. I would love to hear what others think of these and find out what you all are reading as well. Be warned, I do talk about the storylines in these books so if you havent read them but plan on doing so then you may want to skip my opinion on that particular book. Cable and XForce 12 Im on issue 11 now and I really enjoy this series. Im a Cable a

Visited Comics Shop

Let's see if they have anything good... So I was in Richardson, TX this week on business. The Summit I attended had ended and I had a few hours until my flight was scheduled to depart. Let's see, what can I do for an hour? I was telling a coworker who lives in the area that the rental car return at DFW airport is a pain to find. He agreed, but said I should have no trouble if I used the voice guided feature on Google maps. Downloaded the app to my iPhone and it did work great. Before headin

Venting about sellers

Makes no sense to me... I know there are plenty of sellers here so maybe you can make some sense of this. Theres a book I was looking to purchase on eBay. The seller had it listed at $160 OBO. I put in a Best Offer of $120 since this is what I had recently paid for other, more significant, books in this series with the same CGC grade. This was a fair offer and I had no reason to expect the seller would decline it. I checked it today, and the seller counter offered with $155. Um, what? These ar

Unknown Secret Mission

Among other X-men storylines... I spent some time (OK a lot of time) this weekend researching X-men storylines from the 70's (my forte), looking through the footnotes in each issue, and updating my comic descriptions to link the various issues associated with a particular storyline. Why? Because I like to follow the story along to see how it plays out, and now I can. If anyone else would like to check out some of these great stories, I've put them in order and listed them under their respectiv

TOS 84 CGC 9.4

Looking fancy in the new case... I picked up this book raw from my LCS about a year ago for an amazing price. It looked to be in great condition so I was feeling pretty good about getting at least a 9.0 after a press...Im very slowly looking to complete the Tales of Suspense Cap issues in 9.0 or better graded condition to go along with my reading copies. I previously submitted issue 82, first appearance of the Adaptoid, and it came back 9.4 so when I saw issue 84 came back 9.4 as well as I was

Top 5 List

Random favorites and opinions... On the way home from work today I started thinking about who the smartest heroes in the Marvel universe were. Yeah, random right? Then of course this led to me thinking who the smartest villains might be, then the most powerful, then the best looking women...covering all the bases of brains, brawn, and beauty. With the registry awards coming up now seems as good a time as any to share these thoughts with you and open up the floor to your own opinions. What do y

Top 10 for 2014 it is!

Thanks bagofleas for this annual reminder... We spend so much time and money looking for that next great addition to our collections, it's nice to take a moment and appreciate the books we already own. So on that note I will follow bagofleas lead and take stock of my top 10, comparing it to my last top ten from 9/21/2010...been awhile since Ive done this apparently. The one caveat I will make is that this list is specific to graded books, and not any that are currently raw. 10. Tales of Susp

Time flies

Is it Con season already? So my wife asks me today hey, did you know the Amazing AZ Con was in less than 2 weeks? Well, I knew it was in January...the first con of the year...but I guess time just sorta slipped away from me. I totally did NOT realize it was that close. Apparently she had been talking with someone who thankfully happened to mention it otherwise another week would have gone by, or worse I may have even missed it altogether. I must be getting old, its the only thing that makes se

This week from my LCS 5/22/14

Found a few cool reading copies... I love it when my LCS has a new batch of Silver Age books to look through. Nothing so good this week its worth getting graded, but some nice looking reading copies. This is what I went home with... Tales to Astonish 55 in VG minus Avengers 17 in FN minus Avengers 18 in VG plus All have great eye appeal and make a nice addition to my collection. I would like to have a complete run of Avengers through issue 200 and all the Ant Man Giant Man issues of Ta

This week from my LCS

Picked up a couple of nice issues... I love it when I ask my LCS owner if he has any new goodies for me to look at and he brings out a couple of long boxes from the back filled with Silver Age goodness! This week I was able to peruse some Tales to Astonish and Captain America back issues among other things. I walked out of there with Cap 105 in VF featuring Batroc for 15 bucks and Tales to Astonish 48 in VG featuring the first appearance of The Porcupine for 35. To me these are the kinds of bo

Thinning out the collection

Better to have loved and lost... Ever get to looking at your books and think, "This comic doesn't really fit in my collection anymore?" It's like, you loved it when you first got it, but then your collection just kind of evolved in a different direction. That's what happened to me and I decided that rather than hold on to these books, I will put them up for auction so someone else can enjoy them for awhile. I can also use the money gained to expand my current collection of Bronze Age X-men app

They Have Arrived

Latest additions... I was just finishing my dinner...a carne asada enchilada style burrito, shredded beef taco and a glass of Menage a Trois CA red...not the best of combinations I know, but wine sounded really good and so did Mexican food...then I hear a familiar truck engine and horn honk. It was the UPS man dropping off my CGC books from the Amazing AZ Con in January. Then and Now

My love of comics began with the Silver Surfer. I've been collecting comics for 20 years. I got started when a friend of mine gave me half a dozen Silver Surfer books because he and I liked to surf together. I've been hooked ever since, and the Silver Surfer remains my favorite character of all time. I also enjoy Amazing Spider-man, Uncanny X-men and Wolverine. CGC is a new passion I've developed over the last couple of years. It's the perfect way to preserve, assess the value of, and admire m
