I want to share a quick story about losing a pet this weekend, and pass along and inspirational poem with other animal lovers. Over the weekend we had to put our 10-year old bunny Woody to sleep. Back in August this year, he had a cancerous lump removed from his belly, did extremely well in recovery (for his age), but within a few weeks the lump started to grow again. Eventually his body began to shut down on him, and we stepped in to take away the pain. When another of our pets passed last year, the following poem was shared with us, we found the poem very helpful, and still read it from time to time when we think about our friends who have left us.

Just t his side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Yea 10 years is fairly long for a rabbit, but it was a damn good 10 years. Thank you for reading and responding.

My daughter is on her 3rd rabbit.  First one lasted for about 7-8 years (not sure exactly, she was fully grown when we adopted her), the second one not even a year, the current one is going on 5 years now.  Really miss the second one (she was a lop).  She was very "dog like" in her behavior and interaction with us.  We viewed her no differently than our other two dogs.  Just got sick one day and passed away despite a trip to the local animal ER.  Both were carefully buried in our backyard with headstones.

I'm sorry to hear about that. You guys did a great thing by adopting, especially adopting an adult.  Every year the local shelter gets an influx of rabbits about a month or two after Easter, people get them for their kids and then realize how much work it is, then off to the shelter they go.

It's funny that you describe her as "dog like", all of ours act just like cats!! They are litter box trained, jump up on the couch when they want to be pet, and completely ignore you at other times.

Keep up the good work! If you have any pictures to share, that would be cool.

Don't have a lot of pics.  My daughter probably has a million, but I do have these on my phone with her chilling on the sofa with the dogs.  I think my daughter took these during last Christmas.
