Watch my slab collection grow from scratch to BIG $$$ scratch!

I am going to have to live with that thread title, but whatever!

I have decided the correct term for me, besides original comic art collector, is comic reader. I don't collect comics so much as store the ones I read. I bought some Moebius comics the other day off ebay and when I opened the package I realized these were now the nicest comics in my collection, almost without a doubt. So collecting high grade comics was never my thing. Yes, I grabbed some comics second hand along the way, including a Strange Tales 169 and Daredevil 9 and 10 but not much else unless I bought it to read off the rack. But along the way about 25 years ago I started collecting original art due to a chance encounter with Paul Ryan or Sam de la Rosa at a convention. [i recall thinking "artists draw at cons?" with Paul Ryan and "they sell the art used to make comic pages?" with Samuel de la Rosa (who was one of a few Latino inkers credited as "Manuel Labor" on the issue and who told me that he did not like that one bit) but am not sure which happened first.]

Comic art led me to these boards a few years ago. I had resisted the siren call until recently. But Doc McCoy (I think it was) came over to the OA parts of the boards advertising (his?) free David Petersen art in some thread called Pay it Forward. As I was in the process of trading art regularly with a local dealer, I promptly went and claimed said art. Sadly I traded it away almost immediately to the dealer. I apologize; I was single-minded and unthinking at the time but understand my mistake now. So please forgive me.

But PIF sucked me in right from the start. Especially when I jumped on another piece of OA quickly (still have that one, don't worry). Then a strange thing occurred. I watched as some really cool slabs were given away to fellow boardies. When a nice X-Men slab came up I decided to take the plunge and claim it. (Thanks Griff!) I was quickly offered another slab gratis from a boardie (looking forward to getting that one! :applause:). Now this weekend I took the plunge and decided to have some fun and get a few for myself. I figured it really doesn't matter so much if they are comics I have read and admired so much as fun things to look at on the shelf. So I put out the call for cheap slabs and that thread inspired me to start this one and chronicle the rise through the ranks of my first rate collection. NOT! I am not trying to start a new collection, but have some cool comics displayed that will make me smile.

So without further eloquence...

I know the Planet has been getting around but I don't mind. In a year hopefully I will be upgrading after having purchased others I like as well but for now it is great to have.

Any Wiggles fans here? hot potato hot potato!

I will use the premature, untimely execution of the Old Journals as a reason to start anew here. My slab collection looks nothing like it once did and I feel that I am on the precipice of jumping to another step.

Here is a look around the room right now. (In a bit of disarray now since the flooding.)

Initially I was just fascinated with the slabs and wanted to fill space around the room but as time wore on I switched them out to more personally relevant books.

And here are the ones in the box

I know that you cannot see them all, but you get the idea.

About 3 weeks ago I also bought a NM98 9.4 and ASM300 7.5 here on the boards. I used my new favorite payment method, paypal credit. I starting using paypal credit about three months ago...I buy something and then pay it off as funds from selling come into paypal. It works well for me and I have paid for restoration of a comic page, those two slabs and two others very quickly this way. And if selling dries up I have 6 months to pay them off before any interest would hit.

I have some of those "in the box" waiting for the associated movies to come out and hopefully spike the comics a bit. And the Stan comics for...well...anyway. :jokealert: But I am anxious to buy more GA as I have that darn bug! It is developing from a small infection to a full blown syndrome. So those slabs there are calling to me but I am going to resist for once and try and slow my roll on the GA stuff.

But if you have actually been watching my slab collection grow, it ain't scratch no more!!!

okay, why not an update of my current slab collection. Most of it anyway. I have 10 Planet Comics, 4 Moebius Airtight Garage, some BWS covers, and 2 Walt Simonson SS all in a comic spinner rack in the corner where no light gets to it. 7 more around the room.

The rest are in these two boxes. The first video is the spec/sell box. The second video is "the collection" in addition to what is displayed around the room. I have 8 older books at cgc now as well, SS2 might be the only keeper there with the rest (Batman 121 low grade!) sell box.

okay, spring is coming! Spring is coming! Here is my yearly plea to you: grow vegetable plants and donate their yield to a local food pantry! There are hungry people in your town and if you already grow veggies  you know that you get too much to eat yourself. please donate the extra produce to the food pantry in your town and let your neighbors and relatives get their own food! The hungry people out there need it more and they are rarely able to buy fresh produce as their money goes to other food and bills but fresh veggies are a blast to grow and the feeling you get donating is immeasurable. So consider adding one or more plants to your gardens and donating the yield from those plants...a tomato plant or a eggplant, uh, plant will produce a good amount!

I am off to plant carrot seeds for the first time. I also have 2 buckets with doors on the sides to grow potatoes with easy harvesting! First time on those as well.

Well, the journey continues

I have incorporated as Fedres Comics LLC

I may be fugging it up a bit, it is tax time and a bad time to try and see a cpa so I will be ironing out some kinks for a while moving forward I am sure.

I need to get the NJ sales tax exemption thing settled, I don't understand the online runaround. That is 7% savings right there. w00t w00t. But no official w00t w00ting until I get the forms filed. :wishluck:

I have been thinking about registering as a business for a while now, ever since that first 5 figure consignment a few years ago. But I have finally gone and done it, and am happily ready to bathe in the benefits of the corporate structure. Wifey is already a non-profit (Cannonball Read, benefits breast cancer or some such, ask wifey not me) and is now quite the multi-hyphenate being part of Fedres Comics as well.

I have been spending so much time separating my collection from what I am transferring to Fedres Comics. It is good looking at your comics! I pulled a ton off ebay (got a fiduciary responsibility now) as well. I bought some art from Mike Mignola yesterday and was like, hey wait, Fedres Comics' owns this now!?!!!?!! (shrug) Already I got The Man stickin' it to me! :sumo:

Anyway, feels good to get it all in order. I am consigning some art to Heritage to get the funding going so look out soon, I will be buying buying buying! (Hopefully!!!) I will also be running a modern sales thread soon, time to organize all the pre-orders I haven't yet opened and all the walmart variants I did!!!

I applaud your energy. Lots of benefits to incorporating. Although any remaining pretense of being a hobbyist is out the door!

Thanks, I am full of pretense so I will be alright.

Update, I am moving! In 3 days. So the comic room is no more, long gone. Everything packed up and in transit. Staying in NJ! w00t w00t

The slab collection has grown nicely but was recently culled with 11 slabs going to mcs (2 already sold). I will be selling on live auctioneers after the new year too! w00t w00t! Good action on there so being incorporated it makes sense. Am using my own stuff for auctions supplemented with smaller consignments as I get going.

Anyway, I remembered this thread and felt it should have a bit of closure, or at least an update, since things have changed a bit. I am now a jaded cgc person, a long way from the naive hobbyist who was chasing shiny things when I started this thread. I was saving for an AF15 and then the recent price hike happened; I had $17K saved but cannot spend that on a wonky 1.5 or whatever $25K gets now. AF15 money long gone too, as I said, I bought a house. (And a Sienkiewicz Hendrix page, and a Mignola Wolfman, and a PCR Clea. so yeah, kinda worked out I guess.)

Love this thread - and that you've been updating it for years now.

But I especially applaud the X-Men # 248 in the first photo - that was the first X-Men issue I ever bought! It was 1989, I was 12 years old and the book was only a few months old, as the current issue was # 251.

I found it at a yard sale a few blocks away for $.25 (5 for a $1). Bought it alongside some '89 Nick Fury: Agent of Shield books. And started collecting X-Men in earnest with issue # 252 -- and Classic X-Men # 39 (mid-way through the reprints of the Dark Phoenix Saga).

Years later I'd pick up a raw 7.0 X-Men # 94 and a CGC 3.0 X-Men # 1, but it all started with that issue of # 248 from that yard sale.
