The Death and Return of Superman Multiple Printing Saga

My journey into this wonderful hobby began in early 1994, when I found The Death of Superman graphic novel at Kroger, I was 11 years old then. The graphic novel collected the seven issue storyline "Doomsday!", the comic book colors inside hooked me. I had heard of this “event” but I was so late to the party that it was over. The Death and Return of Superman story arc was a trilogy of storylines; "Doomsday!", "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Supermen!", all ancient history by '94. After I got The Death of Superman graphic novel I searched out issues for  "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Superman!," not an easy task for a kid with no job (or allowance 'cause I never did chores), who's only transportation were his parents or the school bus. I was able to catch up thanks to few Toys-R-Us trips, where late comers like myself were able to pick up various two packs and packaged sets of comics, with a lot of Superman books. I found most of the issues I needed for "Funeral for a Friend" this way. As I got more into collecting I decided I wanted to have the individual "Doomsday!" issues, even thou I had them nicely collected in TPB form, after another Toy R Us trip, I got all those issues from a box set.

As I started accumulating price guides, poly bags and backing boards a monster began to gestate, who became concerned about condition and value. I then discovered there were actually multiple printings for many of these issues, and the first printings were more valuable! Each printing after the first edition was notated by a roman numeral, next to the issue number and price on the top left corner of each cover. The cover art remained the same with each subsequent printing but the title logo color scheme changed for each issue’s printing. After realizing this the 2nd, 3rd and so on printings I had were tarnished in my eye. All of my "Doomsday!" issues were later printings, and not worth the paper they were printed on, and most of my 'Funeral' issues were the same. As the years went on, and the prices went down, I replaced many of my later printings with first prints, recycling the paper rags I had before.

Then CGC came along....

Around 2007 I decided to start CGC Registry set for this storyline, all 9.8, first prints only, yet by the early 2010's I re-discovered the later printings, becoming enticed by the thrill and challenge of trying to find these books in high grade. I love how unexpected all of this was, I know I never thought the later printings would ever be collectible, and I think it's safe to say I wasn't the only one.

Here are my CGC examples thus far, keeping the thrill of the hunt alive.

Some of my childhood books also survived, thankfully.

I now have my first CGC purchase for 2021, continuing my streak from 2020 of hard to find printing variants. Behold, Action Comics #685 Third Printing!

P1030615.JPG.91e2a4360d62f32b453baf0f19ef4e29.JPG

This piece is only my fifth addition in the Funeral for a Friend multiple print variant category. This is also the first book with three or more printings where I now have each variant in 9.8 grade, and I started way back in 2007 or 08.

I'm really pleased with this latest addition, I have another one for my Reign of the Supermen set coming my way hopefully next Monday - my collection is off to a good start in 2021. Last year I was able to acquire several 9.8 graded books I'd dreamt about having for years, including Adventures of Superman #505 Collector's Edition, Superman #73 Second Printing, Action Comics #683 Second Printing and Adventures of Superman #498 Third Printing to name a few. Last year was also a real shot of vitamin C to my Death and Return of Superman registry set, I started the year ranking in 5th or 7th place if I recall correctly and ended in 3rd place. Speaking of rankings, my friend @Iconic1sachieved the the number one position along with best set presentation in 2020, his set truly is an iconic 1! Don't worry @Iconic1s, you're in no danger of being passed by me anytime soon in the set rankings, I still have a long way to go, I also have yet to go down the Signature Series rabbit hole, so, when the day does come (if, which at this point is a really big 'if') and I have every issue, your signature points will keep you well above.  For those who my not be familiar with @Iconic1sset, he's spent many months tracking down all of the illusive hard to find books raw, submitting several invoices to CGC and ending up with many special books, including several lone 9.8 copies as of this writing for many of these rare multiple print variants, his set is worth checking out.

As far as my registry set goes, I'm currently at 60% completion, with 59 books registered for a set of 98 books. I'm really pleased with my progress and I don't mind the slow and steady path. I've kept myself motivated over the years by breaking this set down into subsets:

Doomsday Teasers - got all four of them! (this was actually not easy to complete!)

Doomsday! (I have six of seven - damn you Justice League America #69!)

Funeral for a Friend (Need two more)

Reign of the Supermen! (nine to go)

The Collector's Editions (Just need Adventures of Superman #501)

The multiple printings

The Platinum Editions

The multiple printings are my favorite, I'm almost at the halfway mark with 19 out of 40 in 9.8 grade.

I'd like to thank @Iconic1sand @onlyweaknesskryptonitefor their knowledge support throughout this journey. I'd also like to thank @FoggyNelson, @1950's war comics, @Bibbo, @kenaran, @kav and @Vfactor1 for all their likes and comments throughout my various journals. I'd also like to welcome newcomer @JoeyClarkKent, I can't wait to see where your collection goes from here.

Congratulations! I definitely have enjoyed seeing your journey toward completing this set.  Good luck!

I’m just now noticing the difference in moon color on the first and second printing of Action Comics #683!

Maybe someone in the printing department at DC thought the title logo coloring would blend too much with moon on the second printing and changed the color. (shrug)

I think you may be right!  I really love that white moon… kinda makes me wonder what was going on that made the moon yellow on the first printing.  Those look great together! (thumbsu

So it's been seven months since my last multiple printing addition to the collection! That just makes this piece all the more rewarding.

P1030665.JPG.722e8651f18665c327d02d0b806d95d8.JPG

Over the last year I lost out three previous times for a 9.8 of this HTF second printing, now I have one. This book is crazy hard to find in 9.8, and commands more of a premium than the third printing. Someday I shall bestow this piece, along with everything else to my progeny! :roflmao:

I just need the fourth printing to complete this set.

I hear you on the TAT, I almost feel like the Best Presentation award was a way to dupe me into submitting books again.

This book is back in the collection, I had a 9.8 previously but let it go to pursue other opportunities. This replacement piece is super sharp.

Just need that third and final printing. There are only two 9.8s in the CGC census, I know where one is, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Check it out, the owner is a good dude!

https://comics.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/ComicView.aspx?PeopleSetComicID=1116360

I had an opportunity for the other 9.8 on eBay years ago for only $50, I don’t know where my head was at as I passed on it, I’ve been kicking myself ever since.

What do you think cat?

Edit: 01/14/2023

There are now 8 copies of Adventures of Superman #497 3rd printing listed in the census in 9.8 grade.
