Anyone Remember Skywald Magazines?

Won this in the recent Pedigree Comics auction. These mags were around for the first half of the 1970s. At the time, many thought of them as the poor man's Warren mags. But since then a cult following has developed for these books, more or less. A bunch of them were up for auction here, which was a surprise, since you rarely see slabbed copies of these turn up on the market. Along with Nightmare, there was also Scream and Psycho. I like the provocative cover on this one. Enjoy.

Mr. Ivic, I dig your style! From your Lois Lane collection to your most recent acquisition. I love Skywald, at least the covers. I have a few raw Skywalds in my collection but I’m afraid to read them, cause they’re nice quality!

I had my eye on several mags in that Pedigree auction, including Scream #5 in 9.8. I had no idea what to expect price wise.

Nightmare #17 is a great cover, I love the shameless gratuitousness of many of these covers, the tattered clothing of the damsels always seem to leave just enough fabric in the right places.

Thanks for the compliment Brandon! And right you are about the stimulating Skywald covers. Mind you, the Warren mags were just as guilty in that regard.

Skywald was my first exposure to The Heap. I still have the one shot from the early 70's, and I have picked up quite a few G.A. books that contain Heap adventures since then (although technically, I don't necessarily think they are the same character). I don't think The Heap was too provocative...

I skipped these on the newsstand but picked up a huge box of these and Wardens about 1981. Found some great covers, but didn't really care for the stories by either company. When I was selling, Warren was much more desirable, and Skywald was almost an afterthought. I have dozens but haven't looked inside one in decades.

Hi,

those are great mags!!

they are relatively  tough in hi grade, very collectible in lower grades also as many collectors like low grade readers of these.

I recently gave  a few, nightmare 7, scream4 , pycho 1 ,and  few others to HERITAGE. I have stacked up quite  a few of these over the years and still have many. I decided to 'let a few go" for now though. Will hold the rest.

I enjoy them and if they ever get more folks  aware and "chasing them" they wont be so cheap anymore!

take care, Scott
