The Death and Return of Superman Collector's Editions

The Death and Return of Superman saga is so 90s, and also credited with the beginning of the publishing gluttony that paved the way for the market crash later in the decade. One such 90s thing about this set is the number of "Collector's Editions" released. I have most of these and enjoy them, but it has been frustrating finding them graded. These editions crowed just about every comic shop in America but I never see any raw 9.8 candidates. Most of the graded examples are also listed with high BIN prices, so I wait patiently for regular auctions.

All four Superman titles cover dated June, 1993, were released with Collector's Editions along with regular or newsstand counterparts, starting with Adventures of Superman #500. AoS #500 was the prelude to the "Reign of the Supermen!" storyline, introducing four new Supermen. AoS #500 Collector's Edition came sealed with a trading card.

I believe AoS #500 was the most ordered and distributed comic book of 1993. I had my eye on a few eBay auctions for 9.8 graded editions recently and was surprised to see them realize $50 to $75.

The next Collector's Editions were the four Superman titles that followed AoS #500 with Die Cut covers, these editions also came with a centerfold poster.

Action Comics #687D Superman The Man of Steel #22D Superman #78D Adventures of Superman #501D

Then the real Superman finally returned, with two more (and shinny) Collector's Editions for Superman #82 and Adventures of Superman #505.

What I have thus far.

I just need the Collector's Editions of Superman #78, Adventures of Superman #501 and #505. I also need a scanner.

As of this writing, AoS #505 has only 1 9.8 listed for both the regular and Collector's Edition. :whatthe:

Interesting enough these made their way to most baseball card, drug store, toy shop, and book stores. If you look at the back of the tab they were made and distributed by Beckett. If I remember correctly this specific one came from a Woolworths in Cincinnati Ohio.

I was able to get AOS 500 CE at Toys 'R' Us in 1993, so yes, DC distributors sure cast a wide net with these collector's editions.  Ah, the good ole' days. :cloud9:

The AOS 505 CE we were discussing in addition to coming in the Beckett pack shown and one more I have not found the pack or pictures yet, was also found in these 20180420_060425.thumb.jpg.dc7c431b7cad108a4e48fe5198c453e3.jpg

This pack has not only the 505 CE , but also where the Superman 82 second print hidden inside20190913_234952.thumb.jpg.f77b8c026649d36f3df1167f726f9465.jpg20190913_235000.thumb.jpg.c91f806962368f74f7e36731ab05f6f2.jpg

The 500 CE was literally everywhere. After the success of the death storyline they WAY over produced the 500. Not only could the bagged CE be found in many different packs they also started sending them to 3 party companies to include in their multi packs. ( Those "Out of Print" packs) as well as set packs

Here is another Beckett Pack that contains the 75 second print and the 500 CE.20180402_011255.thumb.jpg.2144e04cdf8c47e2afc1f9867201bf6e.jpg20180402_011306.thumb.jpg.a84ee0eef70a70a227bb5f105d5ffeb7.jpg

plus with the major distribution and popularity almost all of the storylines have been produced in many foreign versions as well..20180402_013433.thumb.jpg.339b5df9c147aa85466e7f9ebba8f065.jpg20180402_013648.thumb.jpg.5328702d78d42fdf03e0cb5a0f0a62be.jpg

and I do agree Toys R Us, Kaybee Toys, Waldenbooks were some of my favorites back then. I always found many of these packs and boxes that I could not get enough of and still have most of them.

You are welcome . I always enjoy sharing .  Maybe one day, I will actually be able to go through and properly organize, photograph, and post all of it together.  I have such an extensive collection for several runs, but this one was my favorite.

These four books probably mean the most to me, personally, from my collection.

While certainly not the most “valuable” selections from the Death/Return catalog, they’re the ones closest to my heart as a collector.

I was a bit late to the party, and discovered the Death of Superman story through the TPB. I still remember walking past my local comic shop on the way to piano lessons and seeing it displayed in the front window in February of 1993. Superman, covered in blood, with a sobbing Lois Lane cradling him. What could have done this?! I had to know and promptly picked it up the following Saturday. The one pictured is one of the “Platinum Edition” copies, limited to a run of 4,500 which is pretty darn low for 1993.

While I missed the event that was Superman #75, I would not miss his “return” in Adventures of Superman #500 CE, which I found at Toys ‘R’ Us during its initial release.

Superman #82 CE is still my favorite comic cover of all time. I remember seeing it on the rack for the first time at Osco, my local drug store, stopping me in my tracks.

Adventures of Superman #505 CE was gifted to me by a friend for my birthday that same year. It was part of the “Superman Greatest Hits” set which contained several other random books from “Reign of The Supermen”.  As noted earlier in this thread, the softer Holo-grafx cover makes a CGC 9.8 grade for this one extraordinarily rare.

Item #51812867 Front Cover: Adventures of Superman #498 CGC 9.8

Finally got my hands on this one! While not a "collector's edition" it's still one of my favorite covers from this run.

Currently on the hunt for Action Comics #692 CGC 9.8, if y'all can keep your eyes open for me. :wishluck:

Congratulations, that’s a tough one for sure. I hope you find AC 692 soon.

Thanks! Thinking it must look pretty great as a trio next to Superman 82 & AOS 505 :cloud9:

Is this the one that was on eBay last week?

Yes! Nabbed it as soon as I saw it. Thought for sure I’d be on the hunt for a while, but lo and behold! 💥

This was the last one of the four die-cut covers I needed, as well as the last 'Collector's Edition' to have each in 9.8 grade. It took me over ten years, since I waited for auctions over BINs on all but Adventures of Superman #505, a book which had only a single 9.8 in the census for over a decade, until 2020. The die-cut covers are readily available on eBay and Mycomicshop for outlandish prices if you ask me, thankfully I was able to obtain them all for around $30 to $40 each, but boy did I have to wait.

These look good together!
