10x10 (2018)
Luke Evans, Kelly Reilly

Directed by: Suzi Ewing

Platform: NowTV

IMDB 4.9/10, RT: 67% Fresh

Synopsis: Just a few days from opening her new business, Cathy's (Kelly Reilly) fresh start is interrupted when she is attacked, kidnapped and locked in a room. She assumes the kidnapper wants her body or her life, but he is after something simpler...her name.

Verdict: It held my interest, I thought the spin on the idea was interesting however it was filled with clichés and the things that happen during the movie just leaves you scratching your head.A somewhat half-assed effort at a thriller with a twist. Also 2 British actors with passable American accents amused me. Don't waste your time.

1941 (1979)
Dan Ackroyd, John Belushi, Treat Williams, Nancy Allen

Directed by: Steven Spielberg

Platform: Netflix

IMDB 5.8/10, RT: 39% Rotten

Synopsis: Hysteria grips California in the wake of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. An assorted group of defenders attempt to make the coast defensible against an imagined Japanese invasion, in this big budget, big cast comedy. Members of a Japanese submarine crew scout out the madness, along with a Captain in Germany's Kreigsmarine (Navy).

Verdict: A comedy directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Robert Zemeckis & Bob Gale! I had high hopes straight away. Didn't live up to them, it was moderately funny but never seemed to know what it wanted to be, an Airplane rip off or just a general comedy, I felt the "laugh out loud" parts were early on and didn't really give much after that. Turned it off after an hour.

Did you see the theatrical or extended cut?  The extended cut (about 30 minutes longer) is a bit better, but neither film is a real "comedy" (I think of it more in the vain of Sellers' Dr. Strangelove.)

1984 (1984)

Based upon the novel “1984” by George Orwell

John Hurt, Richard Burton, Suzanna Hamilton, Cyril Cusack & Gregor Fisher

Directed by: Michael Radford (White Mischief, Il Postino)

Platform: NowTV

IMDB 7.2/10, RT: 79% Fresh

Synopsis: In a totalitarian future society, a man, whose daily work is re-writing history, tries to rebel by falling in love.

Verdict: Its been a very long time since I’ve read the book but I think the movie captures the essence quite well. It made me laugh to spot Trigger and Rab C Nesbitt in the movie!

2036 Origin Unknown (2018)

Katee Sackhoff, Ray Fearon, Julie Cox

Directed by: Hasraf Dulull

Platform: NowTV

IMDB 4.9/10

Synopsis: After a failed mission to Mars, A.I./ARTI is now used for the 2036 mission with a few human supervisors. A monolith of unknown origin is found there. It will have a big effect on Earth.

Verdict: Feels like something SyFy produced, CGI off a computer game and a low budget one at that, bad ---script and worse voice acting. The only good thing is Katee Sackhoff, she must have been desperate for a payday. I stuck to my 20 minute rule and turned it off!

22 Chaser (2018)

Brian J Smith, Kaniehtiio Horn, Raoul Max Trujillo, Aaron Ashmore

Directed by: Rafal Sowlowski

Platform: NowTV

IMDB 5.2/10

Synopsis: One of the city's last decent tow truck drivers risks everything on a desperate quest to become king of the road and provide for his struggling family.”

Verdict: Did not interest me one bit, gave it the 20 minute rule.

28 Days (2000)

Sandra Bullock, Viggo Mortenson, Dominic West, Elizabeth Perkins, Azura Skye, Steve Buscemi, Alan Tudyk

Directed by: Betty Thomas (Private Parts, Dr Doolittle, I Spy, Alvin and the Chipmonks)

Platform: NowTV

IMDB 6/10, RT: 32% Rotten

Synopsis: A big-city newspaper columnist is forced to enter a drug and alcohol rehab center after ruining her sister's wedding and crashing a stolen limousine.

Verdict: I've hit my first Sandy B movie! I would say one of her less annoying roles but she doesn't really sell it for me, even Steve Buscemi can't stop me from turning this off at the 40 minutes mark.

2:22 (2017)

Michiel Huisman, Theresa Palmer, Sam Reid, John Walters

Directed by: Paul Currie

Platform: NowTV

IMDB 5.8/10, RT: 22% Rotten

Synopsis: A man's life is derailed when an ominous pattern of events repeats itself in exactly the same manner every day, ending at precisely 2:22 p.m.

Verdict: Not a bad sci-fi thriller (light on the thriller) although predictable, ---script was ok, cast was ok. Funny fact, it’s the worst grossing movie of 2017 making only $422 during its one week stay in theatres.

30 Minutes or Less (2011]

Jesse Eisenburg, Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari, Michael Pena

Directed by: Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad, Venom)

Platform: NowTV

IMDB 6.1/10

Synopsis: Two fledgling criminals kidnap a pizza delivery guy, strap a bomb to his chest, and inform him that he has mere hours to rob a bank or else...

Verdict: Not a bad crime comedy, obviously inspired by the events that would be later detailed in the Netflix doc “Evil Genuis”. Eisenburg and Ansari had great chemistry on screen, normally I find Ansari to be quite annoying, his stand ups are at least but here he worked. I can’t take Michael Pena seriously as a tough guy, even in a comedy and Danny McBride seems to play the same character in everything. It’s not a bad movie I just expected something better, more clever from the director of Zombieland.

6 Below: Miracle on the Mountain (2017)

Based on the true story "Crystal Clear" by Eric LeMarque

Josh Hartnett, Mira Sorvino, Sarah Dumont

Directed by: Scott Waugh (Need for Speed)

Platform: Netflix

IMDB 5.7/10, RT: 22% Rotten

Synopsis: An adrenaline seeking snowboarder gets lost in a massive winter storm in the back country of the High Sierras where he is pushed to the limits of human endurance and forced to battle his own personal demons as he fights for survival....

Verdict: Hartnett does a very good job of carrying this movie, the cinematography is very good and the early action sequences are filmed with drones and go pros which gives a first person feel to it. The movie switches to present day and LeMarques past which sometimes is a little on the nose, these parts don’t click as well. It lacks the tension and hopelessness of 127 Hours but it’s an enjoyable movie. It shows clips of LeMarque present day during the credits.
