A Bad Idea Gone Wrong (2017)

Matt Jones, Will Rogers, Jonny Mars, Eleanore Pienta

Directed by: Jason Headley

Platform: NowTV

IMDB: 5.7/10, RT: 80% Fresh

Synopsis: Two would-be thieves forge a surprising relationship with an unexpected house-sitter when they accidentally trap themselves in a house they just broke into.

Verdict: Listed as a comedy but I didn't laugh once, gave it the 20 minutes rule and turned it off!

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Based upon the novel "A Clockwork Orange" (1962) by Anthony Burgess

Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, Michael Bates, Warren Clarke

Directed by: Stanley Kubrick

Platform: NowTV

IMDB: 8.3/10, RT: 90% Fresh

Synopsis: In the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned.

Verdict: Yes I’ve never seen this! Oddly compelling but I think I enjoyed the language more than anything else, not Kubrick best in my opinion.

A Crooked Somebody (2017)

Rich Sommer, Amanda Crew, Clifton Collins Jr, Ed Harris, Joanne Froggatt

Directed by: Trevor White

Platform: NowTV

IMDB: 6.2/10, RT: 80% Fresh

Synopsis: An attention-seeking psychic is kidnapped and tries to use the situation to boost his popularity.

Verdict: Enjoyable drama about a Medium con man (Rich Sommer) who is kidnapped by a man who believes the medium is in contact with the soul of a gas station worker he killed 20 years before. The medium tries to exploit the situation for his own fame and fortune and that’s where it all starts to get complicated.

A Mighty Heart (2007)

Based upon the true story "A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of my Husband Daniel Pearl" (2003) by Mariane Pearl

Angelina Jolie, Dan Futterman, Irrfan Khan, Archie Panjabi, Denis O'Hare, Will Patton

Directed by: Michael Winterbottom (Jude)

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 6.6/10, RT: 79% Fresh

Synopsis: Mariane Pearl embarks on a frantic search to locate her journalist husband, Daniel, when he goes missing in Pakistan.

Verdict: Detailing the true story of Mariane Pearl’s search for her journalist husband who was kidnapped by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002. Not always compelling viewing but Jolie gives a very good performance as well as Khan who plays the police Captain heading up the search.

A Cure For Wellness (2016)

Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs, Mia Goth

Directed by: Gore Verbinski (The Mexican, The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lone Ranger)

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 6.4/10, RT: 42% Rotten

Synopsis: An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from an idyllic but mysterious "wellness center" at a remote location in the Swiss Alps, but soon suspects that the spa's treatments are not what they seem.

Verdict: The movie is beautifully shot, the cinematography is the best thing about the film. It’s far too long at 2hrs 24mins, the --script and acting are good, it has its predictable moments but it’s hardly a “horror”. There is enough mystery to keep you intrigued to the end though.

A Monster Calls (2016)

Lewis MacDougall, Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones

Directed by: J.A. Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom)

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 7.5/10, RT: 86% Fresh

Synopsis: A boy seeks the help of a tree monster to cope with his single mother's terminal illness.

Verdict: I thought this was a very good fantasy drama, Lewis MacDougall (14 at the time) does a tremendous job as the lead, playing a boy who conjures up a fantasy world in which he consoled by a giant tree, a way for him to deal with the illness of his mother, whilst being bullied at school and separated from his father. Thoroughly recommend this, the trailers may make it seem as if its a family film for a Friday evening but its definitely more of a drama adults will appreciate.

A Family Man (2016)

Gerard Butler, Gretchen Mol, Alison Brie, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina

Directed by: Mark Williams (Directorial Debut)

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 6.5/10, RT: 13% Rotten

Synopsis: A headhunter whose life revolves around closing deals in a survival-of-the-fittest boiler room, battles his top rival for control of their job placement company -- his dream of owning the company clashing with the needs of his family.

Verdict: A decent drama with a passable performance by Gerard Butler, I watched it more for the strong supporting cast but Butler did ok. He plays a ruthless headhunter who will do anything to get ahead in the monthly turnover to take the top spot being left by the top boss and a-class ahole Dafoe. But a family issue arises and makes him rethink himself and how he runs his life. I enjoyed it even with the Hollywood ending.

A Most Violent Year (2014)

Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, David Oyelowo, Alessandro Nivola

Directed by: J.C. Chandor (All is Lost)

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 7/10, RT: 89% Fresh

Synopsis: In New York City 1981, an ambitious immigrant fights to protect his business and family during the most dangerous year in the city's history.

Verdict: Massive fans of both actors I had high hopes for this. If slow and methodical are your thing then you might enjoy this movie more than I did, I watched 50 minutes before I threw in the towel, up to that point literally nothing happens and the performances by both were not enough to make me care, shame.

A Wrinkle in Time (2018)

Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling

Directed by: Ava DuVernay (Selma)

Platform: NowTV (UK)

IMDB: 4.2/10, RT: 42% Rotten

Synopsis: After the disappearance of her scientist father, three peculiar beings send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him.

Verdict: I was interested in watching this as Ava DuVernay is heading up the Jack Kirby New Gods movie, looking at the reviews and the rating it really got slammed! The problem I found with the movie was that the real world stuff with Storm Reid's character (her father going missing, being bullied at school) was far more interesting than the fantastical journey they all go on later. I found the three adults (Winfrey, Witherspoon and Kaling) to be overly hammy and Witherspoon to be quite annoying. The CGI was a little hokey in places. DuVarney specifically states that she made this film for a certain age group. So as a 38 year old bloke, this movie is not meant for me but reviewer Mark Kermode (56) makes a good statement that fantasy movies can usually transcend age, quoting E.T. in particular and I agree with him. I agree with him as well that a great fantasy sweeps you up in it and takes you along with it but unfortunately (for me) this never does.

I think 4.2/10 is way too harsh a rating and I'd put it more up at the 6 level.

Acts of Violence (2018)

Bruce Willis, Cole Hauser, Shawn Ashmore

Directed by: Brett Donowho

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 5.2/10, RT: 0% Rotten

Synopsis: At a bachelorette party in a nightclub, the bride tells 2 guys offering blow to go away. They abduct her. The groom's 2 big brothers looked after their kid brother as kids and do so now again as veterans, "looking" for her and the 2 guys.

Verdict: Bruce Willis topping up his pension in this B-grade DTV actioner, think Four Brothers meets Taken but not as good as those two movies. Don't waste your time.

Adventureland (2009)

Jesse Eisenburg, Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds

Directed by: Greg Mottola (Superbad, Paul)

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 6.8/10, RT: 88% Fresh

Synopsis: In the summer of 1987, a college graduate takes a 'nowhere' job at his local amusement park, only to find it's the perfect course to get him prepared for the real world.

Verdict: Not a bad drama set in the 80s with the typical Eisenburg performance and the monotone Stewart, the soundtrack is probably the best thing about it.

After Earth (2013)

Will Smith, Jaden Smith

Directed by: M.Night Shyamalan

Platform: NowTV (UK)

IMDB: 4.8/10, RT: 11% Rotten

Synopsis: A crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity's escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.

Verdict: I may have watched more than 20 minutes of this movie if they had cast a competent child actor, however Will Smith forced his son on us who cannot act to save his life. Terrible performance.

Airheads (1994)

Brendan Fraser, Steve Buscemi, Adam Sandler

Directed by: Michael Lehmann (Heathers, Meet the Applegates, Hudson Hawk, 40 Days and 40 Nights)

Platform: NowTV (UK)

IMDB: 6.1/10, RT: 21% Rotten

Synopsis: Three band members hoping for a big break head to a radio station to play their demo tape and wind up holding everyone hostage with plastic guns when the head D.J. refuses to play them.

Verdict: Started off mildly amusing, typical mid-90s comedy, however I was bored after 40 minutes so turned it off.

Alienator (1990)

Jan-Michael Vincent, John Phillip Law

Directed by: Fred Olen Ray

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 2.8/10, 9% Rotten

Synopsis: In a far-off corner of the galaxy, a well-armed rebel battalion ambushes the armies of the great tyrant, Baal. A massacre ensues. Thousands of innocents perish and the leader of the rebellion Kol, is captured and sentenced to die. Today on a dark prison planet, where no man has ever escaped, the commanding executioner prepares to send his prisoner straight to hell!

Verdict: Now here's a movie! Its terrible, its hilariously bad, so bad I couldn't stop watching it! Its just so funny how bad it is. The bad acting, the terrible --script, the music made by a 5 year old with a synthesizer, this movie is so bad Jaden Smith would have fitted right in! What was Jan-Michael Vincent thinking, what was he paid more importantly!

Alive (1993)

Ethan Hawke, Vincent Spano, Josh Hamilton

Directed by: Frank Marshall (Arachnophobia, Congo)

Platform: NowTV (UK)

IMDB: 7.1/10, RT: 62% Fresh

Synopsis: A Uruguayan rugby team stranded in the snow swept Andes are forced to use desperate measures to survive after a plane crash.

Verdict: Based on the real life plane crash in 1972 in the Andes carrying the Uruguayan rugby team, family, friends and supporters, the survivors reluctantly turn to cannibalism to survive. The film is obviously of the 90s and sometimes feels like a TV movie but it’s still does a good job of conveying what these people went through and the extremes they went to survive, 2 months they were up there before rescue. Amazing.

All is Lost (2013)

Robert Redford

Directed by: J.C. Chandor

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 6.9/10, RT: 94% Fresh

Synopsis: After a collision with a shipping container at sea, a resourceful sailor finds himself, despite all efforts to the contrary, staring his mortality in the face.

Verdict: Redford puts on an acting masterclass with very little dialogue, at 77 he insisted on doing all his own stunts which really adds to the realism. Simple story, “Our Man” wakes up on his yacht with water pouring in from a hole in the side, he finds a wayward shipping container has smashed into it. The rest is a story of survival which I found utterly compelling.

All I See is You (2016)

Blake Lively, Jason Clarke

Directed by: Marc Forster (Monsters Ball, The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace, World War Z)

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 5.4/10, RT: 26% Rotten

Synopsis: A blind woman's relationship with her husband changes when she regains her sight and discovers disturbing details about themselves.

Verdict: Lively plays a blind woman married to Clarke who undergoes an operation to restore her sight in one eye but is her life as she believed it to be? I didn’t find out, I was bored silly by the first 40 minutes.

Allied (2016)

Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard, Jared Harris

Directed by: Robert Zemeckis

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 7.1/10, RT: 60% Fresh

Synopsis: In 1942, a Canadian intelligence officer in North Africa encounters a female French Resistance fighter on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. When they reunite in London, their relationship is tested by the pressures of war.

Verdict: Pitt plays a Canadian wing commander sent on assignment and ultimately falls in love with his contact Cotillard. Can’t say much more than that without giving away a plot point but I thought it was a very enjoyable spy come drama come WW2 actioner, Pitt is his usual self but I thought Cotillard was excellent.

Alone in Berlin (2016)

Emma Thompson, Brendan Gleeson, Daniel Bruhl

Directed by: Vincent Perez (Queen of the Damned, Crow City of Angels, La Reine Margot)

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 6.5/10, RT: 58% Rotten

Synopsis: After a Nazi German working class couple loses their son in World War II, they decide to retaliate by secretly leafletting handwritten cards in Berlin denouncing their government.

Verdict: Based on the 1947 novel “Everyman Dies Alone” by German author Hans Fallada which in itself is based on the true story of Otto and Elise Hampel whose only son died during the occupation of France. They both revolt against the Nazi regime by writing on postcards denouncing Hitler and his evil regime and leaving them around Berlin. Daniel Bruhl plays the police detective tasked with finding them, ultimately it’s a tale that anyone can fight against tyranny and make a difference.

All The Money In The World (2017)

Michelle Williams, Christopher Plummer, Mark Wahlberg

Directed by: Ridley Scott

Platform: NowTV (UK)

IMDB: 6.8/10, RT: 79% Fresh

Synopsis: The story of the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother to convince his billionaire grandfather Jean Paul Getty to pay the ransom.

Verdict: The movie that was completed at the time the allegations against Kevin Spacey became public, Scott wanted the film released instead of being shelved so he re-shot all of Spaceys scenes replacing him with Plummer who was his first choice anyway but the studio talked him into casting Spacey as a bigger name.

The film is based on the true story of the kidnapping of J.P Getty’s grandson, Getty was once the richest man on the planet and the film documents his refusal to pay the ransom of $17million. The film is overly long, not always that interesting but I stuck with it to see the conclusion as I knew nothing of the story, the performances by Williams and Plummer are very good but it’s definitely one of Scott’s more average movies, quite forgettable to be honest.

American Fable (2016)

Peyton Kennedy, Richard Schiff

Directed by: Anne Hamilton (directorial debut)

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 6.1/10, RT: 73% Fresh

Synopsis: When 11-year-old Gitty discovers that her beloved father is hiding a wealthy man in her family's silo in order to save their struggling farm, she is forced to choose between saving the man's life or protecting her family from the consequences of their actions. AMERICAN FABLE is a fairytale thriller set in the 1980s rural Midwest about a courageous girl living in a dark - sometimes magical - world.

Verdict: I watched for 40 minutes and was frankly bored.

The Accountant (2016)

Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal, J.K.Simmons

Directed by: Gavin O’Connor (Warrior)

Platform: Amazon Prime (UK)

IMDB: 7.3/10, RT: 51% Rotten

Synopsis: As a math savant uncooks the books for a new client, the Treasury Department closes in on his activities, and the body count starts to rise.

Verdict: Affleck plays a forensic accountant who is hired to look through the books of a tech company owned by John Lithgows character. The movies flashes back to Afflecks past and does a good job of revealing why he acts he acts the way he does. It starts off slow but once it gets going I thought it was very enjoyable, good performance by Affleck and good amount of action/fighting. Recommended.

American Hustle (2013)

Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence

Directed by: David O.Russell (Three Kings, The Fighter)

Platform: Recorded from T.V.

IMDB: 7.2/10, RT: 93% Fresh

Synopsis: A con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F.B.I. Agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and the Mafia.

Verdict: Plot is loosely based on the “Abscam” scandal of the 70/80s ran by the FBI. Bale who plays a small time con man with his partner Adams is pinched by the FBI who is then forced to work for them, scamming the scammers. Great cast, great 4 performances although again for me I felt it could have been trimmed somewhat by 20 mins, still enjoyable though with a surprise cameo by an actor I didn’t know was in it. It looks great but I think it needed to be deeper to be a drama, it’s a good crime caper though.

American Made (2017)

Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright

Directed by: Doug Liman (Swingers, Bourne Identity, Jumper, Edge of Tomorrow)

Platform: NowTV(UK)

IMDB: 7.2/10, RT: 86% Fresh

Synopsis: The story of Barry Seal, an American pilot who became a drug-runner for the CIA in the 1980s in a clandestine operation that would be exposed as the Iran-Contra Affair.

Verdict: Doug Liman has described this film as a “fun lie based on a true story” and that’s how you have to view this film, it resembles nothing of the real story of Barry Seal. This film was made for Cruise though who you can tell is having a lot of fun making it and it is a fun film, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

American Assassin (2017)

Dylan O’Brien, Michael Keaton, Sanaa Lathan, Taylor Kitsch

Directed by: Michael Cuesta (Episodes of Homeland, Dexter, Elementary)

Platform: Netflix (UK)

IMDB: 6.2/10, RT: 35% Rotten

Synopsis: O’Brien is on holiday and proposes to his girlfriend when she is gunned down by terrorists (reminiscent of the Tunisia beach attacks), fast forward and he has undergone training in martial arts and gun usage with the aim of infiltrating the terrorist cell and avenging his girlfriend, but he gets drafted into the CIA to be trained by the scenery chewing Keaton.

Verdict:I watched about 50 minutes, I thought it was a bit boring and very paint by numbers, I’ve seen the same done better.
