Don't Knock Twice (2016)

Katee Sackhoff, Lucy Boynton, Richard Mylan, Nick Moran

Directed by: Caradog W. James

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 5.1/10, 22% Rotten

Runtime: 93 Minutes (Watched: 30 mins)

Synopsis: A mother desperate to reconnect with her troubled daughter becomes embroiled in the urban legend of a demonic witch.

Verdict: Bog standard urban legend is true supernatural fare, I could see where it was heading with its standard jump scares, nothing else stood out enough to continue watching past half hour.

Don't Look Now (1973)

Based upon the short story "Don't Look Now" from the collected volume "Not After Midnight, and other stories" (1971) by Daphne du Maurier

Donald Sutherland, Julie Christie, Hilary Mason, Clelia Matania, Massimo Serato

Directed by: Nicolas Roeg (The Man Who Fell to Earth, Castaway)

Platform: NowTV

IMDB: 7.3/10, RT: 97% Fresh

Runtime: 110 Minutes (Watched: all of it)

Synopsis: A married couple grieving the recent death of their young daughter are in Venice when they encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is psychic and brings a warning from beyond.

Verdict: A great supernatural drama with more emphasis on drama, fleshed out characters and story and really well directed. Unfortunately I knew the ending going in but that didn't spoil my enjoyment of the buildup.

Don't Worry Baby (2015)

John Magaro, Christopher McDonald, Dreama Walker, Tom Lipinski, Talia Balsam

Written & Directed by: Julian Branciforte

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 5.4/10, RT: 57% Rotten

Runtime: 88 Minutes (Watched: 15mins)

Synopsis: A struggling photographer and his philandering father unknowingly have a one-night stand with the same woman. Four years later, they learn that either one of them might have fathered her daughter.

Verdict: Didn't interest me at all.

Double Jeopardy (1999)

Ashley Judd, Tommy Lee Jones, Bruce Greenwood

Directed by: Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy)

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 6.5/10, RT: 27% Rotten

Runtime: 105 Minutes (Watched: All of it)

Synopsis: A woman framed for her husband's murder suspects he is still alive; as she has already been tried for the crime, she can't be re-prosecuted if she finds and kills him.

Verdict: Enjoyable enough crime thriller, although the good cast elevates the material.

The Devil's Tomb (2009)

Cuba Gooding Jr, Taryn Manning, Valerie Cruz, Franky G, Zack Ward, Henry Rollins, Bill Moseley, Ray Winstone & Ron Perlman

Directed by: Jason Connery - Sean Connery's Son

Platform: Horror Channel

IMDB: 3.7/10

Runtime: 90 Minutes (Watched: 20 Mins)

Synopsis: An elite group of soldiers on a covert mission to retrieve a scientist from an underground lab encounter an ancient evil in the facility.

Verdict: This was awful, with the cast they had I was surprised it was bad as this. What happened to Cuba Gooding Jr? After Jerry Maguire he just seems to make utter dross.

Down a Dark Hall (2018)

Adaptation of the novel "Down a Dark Hall" (1974) by Lois Duncan

AnnaSophia Robb, Uma Thurman, Isabelle Fuhrman, Victoria Moroles, Noah Silver, Taylor Russell, Rosie Day

Directed by: Rodrigo Cortes

Platform: Netflix

Runtime: 96 Minutes (Watched: All of it)

Synopsis: A troubled teen named Kit Gordy is forced to join the exclusive Blackwood Boarding School, just to find herself trapped by dark forces around its mysterious headmistress, Madame Duret.

Verdict: For a movie aimed at young adults it's actually quite enjoyable, well acted by the young cast and Thurman, very stylish looking but with little in the way of horror just some token jump scares that come with the PG-13 certificate. It becomes a bit amateur dramatics towards the end but I quite liked it.

Downsizing (2017)

Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, Kristen Wiig

Directed by: Alexander Payne (Election, About Schmidt, Sideways)

Platform: NowTV

IMDB: 5.7/10, RT: 48% Rotten

Runtime: 135 Minutes (Watched: All of it)

Synopsis: Scientists have discovered a way to miniaturise life, including humans. This is seen as a solution to overpopulation and people start to voluntarily be 'downsized', forming communities of downsized people. Paul and Audrey Safranek, an average suburban couple, decide to take the plunge.

Verdict: I remember being intrigued by this movie when it was initially released, I see it got a lot of poor reviews but I love Sideways (by the same director) so went in with low expectations, I did enjoy it overall. I'm not entirely sure what message the film was trying to convey overall, initially there is a bit of comedy when you mix the large and small world, after that it concentrates on Damons character and this is where the film loses what its trying to say. Overall I liked it but unlike Sideways I probably wouldn't watch it again.

Dragon (Wu xia) (2011)

Mandarin language with English subtitles

Donnie Yen, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Wei Tang, Jimmy Wang Yu, Kara Wai

Directed by: Peter Ho-Sun Tan

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 7.1/10, RT: 85% Fresh

Runtime: 98 Minutes (Watched: All of it)

Synopsis: A papermaker gets involved with a murder case concerning two criminals leading to a determined detective suspecting him and the former's vicious father searching for him.

Verdict: Not a typical martial arts movie, its more like a crime noir. I found it to be somewhat refreshing as it focused on the story and characters, it did remind me of "A History of Violence" in a way.

Dracula (1958) - In the U.S. its called "Horror of Dracula"

Adaptation of the novel "Dracula" (1897) by Bram Stoker

Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, Carol Marsh

Directed by: Terence Fisher

Platform: Horror Channel

IMDB: 7.3/10, 89% Fresh

Runtime: 82 Minutes (Watched: All of it)

Synopsis: After Jonathan Harker attacks Dracula at his castle, the vampire travels to a nearby City, where he preys on the family of Harker's fiancée. The only one who may be able to protect them is Dr. van Helsing, Harker's friend and fellow-student of vampires, who is determined to destroy Dracula, whatever the cost.

Verdict: Pretty good if concise adaptation of the book. Christopher Lee only has 7 minutes of screen time, which buys into the whole "less is more" when it comes to horror. He was paid £750 which for 1958 and only 7 minutes work, isn't a bad pay day!

DeepStar Six (1989)

Greg Evigan, Nancy Everhard, Taurean Blacque, Miguel Ferrer, Nia Peeples, Matt McCoy

Directed by: Sean S. Cunningham (Friday the 13th)

Platform: Horror channel

IMDB: 5.3

Runtime: 97 Minutes (Watched: all of it)

Synopsis: The crew of an experimental underwater nuclear base are forced to struggle for their lives when their explorations disturb a creature who threatens to destroy their base.

Verdict: An ok B movie where the monster isn't shown till towards the end (which is a good thing), its watchable if you hadn't seen Alien & The Abyss already. 1989 seemed to be the year for monsters/aliens in the deep with DeepStar Six, The Abyss & Leviathan all having similar premises.

Drive Hard (2014)

John Cusack, Thomas Jane, Zoe Ventoura

Directed by: Brian Trenchard-Smith (Night of the Demons 2, Leprechaun 3 & 4)

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 4.3/10, RT: 8% Rotten

Runtime: 96 Minutes (Watched: 15 mins)

Synopsis: A former race car driver turned driver's training instructor (Jane) is abducted by a mysterious thief (Cusack) and forced to be the wheel-man for a crime that puts both in the sights of the cops and the mob and leads them all on a chase across Australia's Gold Coast.

Verdict: Just plain awful across the board. I have to watch Grosse Pointe Blank to remind myself that John Cusack used to make good movies.

Dirty Harry (1971)

Clint Eastwood, Andrew Robinson, Harry Guardino, Reni Santoni

Directed by: Don Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Escape From Alcatraz)

Platform: From TV

IMDB: 7.7/10, RT: 91% Fresh

Runtime: 103 Minutes (Watched: All of it)

Synopsis: When a madman calling himself "the Scorpio Killer" (Andrew Robinson) menaces the city, tough as nails San Francisco Police Inspector "Dirty" Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) is assigned to track down and ferret out the crazed psychopath.

Verdict: Classic Eastwood. Still a decent cop revenge thriller.

The Drop (2014)

Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, James Gandolfini, Matthias Schoenaerts, John Ortiz

Directed by: Michael R. Roskam

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 7.1/10, RT: 89% Fresh

This marks the final film of James Gandolfini

Runtime: 105 Minutes (Watched: all of it)

Synopsis: Bob Saginowski finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood's past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living - no matter the cost.

Verdict: Slow burn crime drama with an excellent --script and very good performances. I can't believe how much weight Gandolfini gained since the Sopranos ended.

Avan Jogia, Julia Stiles, Josh Charles, John C. McGinley, Tracie Thoms

Directed by: Bette Gordon

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 4.4/10, RT: 50% Rotten

Runtime: 95 Minutes (Watched: 30 minutes)

Synopsis: A psychiatrist faces his past, present and future when he finds himself involved in the treatment of a young man recently released from prison for a murder committed when the boy was just 11 years old.

Verdict: Boring. Shouldn't have been based on the novel this came from.

Dublin Oldschool (2018)

Emmet Kirwan, Ian Lloyd Anderson, Seana Kerslake, Sarah Greene

Directed by: Dave Tynan

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 6.1/10, RT: 67% Fresh

Runtime: 94 Minutes (Watched: all of it)

Synopsis: Over a drug-fuelled weekend in Dublin, Jason reconnects with his estranged brother, a recovering addict living on the streets.

Verdict: A good drama but it only scratches at the surface of the themes its exploring.

Due Date (2010)

Robert Downey Jr, Zach Galafianakis, Michelle Monaghan, Jamie Foxx, Juliette Lewis

Directed by: Todd Phillips (The Hangover Trilogy, Joker)

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 6.5/10, RT: 40% Rotten

Runtime: 100 Minutes (Watched: 30 minutes)

Synopsis: High-strung father-to-be Peter Highman is forced to hitch a ride with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay on a road trip in order to make it to his child's birth on time.

Verdict: I guess this is a modern day Planes, Trains & Automobiles, I hope Joker is a lot better than this unfunny borefest.

The Duel (2016)

Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth, Alice Braga, Emory Cohen, Felicity Price, William Sadler

Directed by: Kieran Darcy-Smith

Platform: Netflix

IMDB: 5.8/10, RT: 26% Rotten

Runtime: 110 Minutes (Watched: 30 minutes)

Synopsis: A Texas Ranger investigates a series of unexplained deaths in a town called Helena.

Verdict: A slow plodding Western which didn't do enough to hold my attention, judging from the reviews I didn't miss much.

Death Do Us Part (2019)

Known as "Zoo" in North America

Zoe Tapper, Ed Speleers, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Jan Bijvoet

Written & Directed By: Antonio Tublen

Platform: NowTV

IMDB: 5.4/10

Runtime: 94 Minutes (Watched 20)

Synopsis: A couple try to save their marriage during a zombie apocalypse.

Verdict: Essentially a stage play with a Zombie apocalypse going on in the background, I'm just tired of Zombie films regardless of what genre they slip into.

Domino (2019)

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Soren Malling, Paprika Steen, Eriq Ebouaney & Carice Van Houten

Directed by: Brian De Palma

Platform: NowTV

IMDB: 4.4/10, RT: 32% Rotten

Runtime: 88 Minutes (Watched 30)

Synopsis: A Copenhagen police officer seeks justice for his partner's murder by a mysterious man.

Verdict: I can't believe how far De Palma has fallen as a director, this doesn't seem like the same guy that directed Scarface, Blowout, Untouchables and others. This film is a paint by numbers police procedural with some good actors with little to work with but whats worse is the god awful film score!

Defence of the Realm (1985)

Gabriel Byrne, Denholm Elliott, Greta Scacchi, Robbie Coltrane

Directed by: David Drury

Platform: From TV

IMDB: 6.5/10, RT: 100% Fresh

Runtime: 96 Minutes (watched all of it)

Synopsis: After a newspaper reporter helps expose a Member of Parliament as a possible spy, he finds that there's much more to the story than that.

Verdict: A decent conspiracy thriller with good performances but an awful 80s synth soundtrack which is often jarring.
