REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN!

REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN!

“Reign of the Supermen!” was the third act in the Death and Return of Superman saga, that began in the final pages of Adventures of Superman #500 (June, 1993), with four separate ‘first sightings’ of four different individuals wearing the famous “S” shield.

Each creative team on the four separate Superman titles had their own ideas on how Superman could return from death. The editorial decision was to just use all four ideas, with four very different Supermen appearing in Metropolis - the Last Son of Krypton, the Man of Steel, the Man of Tomorrow and Superboy.

These REIGN books are easy to find raw but are a pain to collect in 9.8 grade. Online auctions can end with a bargain or in a pricey bidding war, and many BINs are overpriced IMHO.

My CGC collection of “Reign of the Supermen!” books as of 3/08/2020 (not counting the Collector’s Editions):

The ‘Reign’ section of my set needed some serious lovin’.

I’m really pleased with this piece, a great cover and a very solid 9.8. This book has been difficult to track down, there have been several 9.8 examples of this book on eBay and MyComicShop.com but they were always listed above $100. My patience paid off when this book was finally listed on eBay as a regular auction, with a starting bid of $0.99 and an ending bid for less than $50.

I remember seeing this watch in a department store display case as a kid, it was before I started collecting comic books, which would have been sometime in '93 when I saw it. I heard about the death of Superman and the watch had me curious, this was the first seed planted.

Congrats!  Love that cover!  Always thought that Supergirls’s pose was reminiscent of Superman’s on the cover of Superman 1.

Thank you, this is actually my second 9.8 of this book. I got my first one eight years ago really cheap, then I sold it a few years later on the boards along with a 9.8 AOS #500, which I got for only $24.99. I made a big purchase and I figured theses cheapie books would be easy to get again.

Well, now a days AOS #500 regular edition goes for at least $90 in 9.8. I regret that decision now, as I had both books in 9.8 holders for less than $50... :tonofbricks:

Check out this YouTube gem on Adventures of Superman #500 from 1993!

Really cool!!  Fun also just to look around the store in the shots to see what is laying around in the background.  This frame caught my eye... Adventure of Superman 499 on the counter...

I saw that too, I also liked seeing all those Newstimes in the background. Man, so many copies of #500, I still can’t believe a 9.8 goes for $80 to $100!

I was actually searching for a commercial I remembered seeing as a kid, about the Reign of the Supermen. I only saw it once in ‘93, it was for a contest to pick the real Superman of the four, with a Super Nintendo as one of the prizes. Still looking.

Also, stay tuned for some upcoming Reign of the Supermen additions!

P.S. I noticed this comic in the background also, talk about out of context! (tsk)

The real Superman wakes up in the Fortress of Solitude, wearing black Kryptonian recovery gear, now known as the black suit, which has achieved much popularity over the years and probably has its own Twitter account. Because of this suit’s first appearance this book will now set you back at least $100 to get in 9.8 grade.  :eyeroll:

2020 has been a terrible year no doubt but it's almost over. This year alone I've manage to accumulate quite a few books for my Reign of the Supermen set. Perhaps this is fitting, the Reign of the Supermen storyline mirrors this terrible year in a way. Like 2020 the storyline begins with great uncertainty, four Supermen appear after Superman's death, adding to the chaos and confusion, then things get really bad... Then finally the real Superman returns.

My latest addition is the final book to don the Reign of the Supermen header.

The reign is over and what a cover! We have Supergirl, The Eradicator, Superboy, Black Suit Superman, Steel, Green Lantern, and the real Superman now with a flapping mullet that would give the Intimidator a run for his money. Superman is back and better than ever baby!

One last addition to my 2020 reign.

P1030602.JPG.409847b975b381d1d9edf26557fdf67a.JPG

I purchased another CGC 9.8 example of this book last October, however, I noticed later on that the top staple rusted. I probably should have tried to return it but I sold it off, with a rusty disclaimer. It's wired to see staple rust on a book from this era but the book came from a seller in Hawaii, probably the climate. Anyway, this piece is much more stronger in eye appeal and in a new holder to boot.

2020 was a terrible year to say the least but I was able to acquire several Reign of the Supermen pieces. Here's to a better 2021, Happy New Year!
