REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN!

REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN!

“Reign of the Supermen!” was the third act in the Death and Return of Superman saga, that began in the final pages of Adventures of Superman #500 (June, 1993), with four separate ‘first sightings’ of four different individuals wearing the famous “S” shield.

Each creative team on the four separate Superman titles had their own ideas on how Superman could return from death. The editorial decision was to just use all four ideas, with four very different Supermen appearing in Metropolis - the Last Son of Krypton, the Man of Steel, the Man of Tomorrow and Superboy.

These REIGN books are easy to find raw but are a pain to collect in 9.8 grade. Online auctions can end with a bargain or in a pricey bidding war, and many BINs are overpriced IMHO.

My CGC collection of “Reign of the Supermen!” books as of 3/08/2020 (not counting the Collector’s Editions):

The reign is comin' down harder - in my collection and on the cover of my latest addition!

Superman #80

What a cover! It has destruction comparable to Old Testament wrath (maybe, it's been a while since I had to read any passages), a cybernetic villain and a victim with a serious case of acid reflux disease!

My only issue with the cover art is that it has the Eradicator/Last Son of Krypton featured as an old man. The Eradicator does eventually rematerialize as a severely injured geriatric, as a result of his encounter with the Cyborg Superman in this issue but we do not actually see this until a few chapters later in Action Comics #690. It's petty but I think leaving the hair and visor on the Eradicator intact would have really put the cover art over the top!

Eradicator, take some Alka-Seltzer for the heart burn and some Tylenol for the headache, and get some rest in the Kryptonian recovery chamber.

THE REAL STEEL DEAL...

...IN YOUR FACE!

Superman: The Man of Steel #25

I don't think I would call this a great cover but it has grown on me since it arrived in my collection. Superman must have oily skin, at least he won't have to worry about wrinkles as much.

Sups, might I make a suggestion?

Scored a copy of Superman #83, maybe...

I say maybe because it was supposed to arrive over a week ago.

I hope it arrives soon.

As to why I'm posting about this book in the Reign of the Supermen section when the top cover header says Funeral for a Friend, it's really the epilogue to the whole saga.

The latest and mostly likely final addition for 2021!

Adventures of Superman #504

I've been after this one for a long time, I've only seen one 9.8 on eBay in recent memory and I lost out on that one. I got this one for a very good price on Heritage, it also came with a CGC 9.4 of the same issue. I'll most likely sell the 9.4 on eBay after the holidays, thou I doubt I'll get much for it. This latest addition does not complete my Reign of the Supermen set but I can say I now have all of the black suit/Kryptonian recovery suit issues.

Okay, not what I meant...

I meant this book, from “Reign of the Supermen!” - Born Again!

Just arrived today and looks sharp!

That now leaves Action Comics #690, Adventures of Superman #503 and 505, Superman #78 and Superman: The Man of Steel #'s 23-4 to complete the Reign.

I won this beauty on ComicLink a few weeks ago, a snipper tried to outbid me in the last few seconds but I dodged the bullet! I'm really pleased with this one, while not rare, it does seem VHTF in CGC 9.8. I love the heat this cover puts out, you really feel the intensity and you know both players are ready to rumble! Just five more books to go to have the complete "Reign of the Supermen!" storyline in 9.8!

Speaking of heat, check out a few of the interiors from this issue, and it just so happens to be Valentine's Day as of this writing!

Lex Luthor II looks like he just stepped off the cover of a romance novel! Too hot!

And if you’re saying, “Brandon, the Bengals lost.” Yes, that’s true, but it was a hell of a run and the future is wide open. Collect what you love and keep your eyes and ears open for those books that elude you.

Beautiful book!  Congratulations!

Thank you, I got it for a great price on mycomicshop.com. Hopefully prices are coming back down to earth on these books, I’ve seen several Reign books listed for $50 now, or maybe it’s just one reasonable seller who’s consigning these.

I remember seeing this watch in a department store display case as a kid, it was before I started collecting comic books, which would have been sometime in '93 when I saw it. I heard about the death of Superman and the watch had me curious, this was the first seed planted.
