More Garth Ennis... plus Clint Eastwood homage cover and new small time publisher... equals collecting opportunity! So three copies went on the Westfield order form. Alas, another miss...

Now this is a GREAT Spawn cover... the dark character superimposed over a bright full moon! It's even more eye-catching when you hold it in your hands...

Howard Chaykin first grabbed my attention in 1983 with the publication of "American Flagg" from First Comics, one of the early independents. Before that, I remember some collectors deriding him for what they considered his lackluster artwork on Marvel's "Star Wars" adaptation. But the Reagan era sci-fi political satire of American Flagg was so new and different, with stylized, almost "digitized" art that matched the jingoistic times... it was great! And made me a Chaykin fan forever. Hence, it was an easy call to pick up three copies of his new Vertigo series in 2001, "American Century"...

I love the fact that Superman is around cuz Donenfeld was peddling Pep Stories and Spicy Detective until he could truly get over. Ironically, the success of Superman led to pressure to clean up his act and might have contributed to the demise of the Girlie pulps

So often I am looking for books to add to the collection and often I forget to appreciate what I have. So posting one of my favorites that’s all. plus it’s Friday and I’m feeling good.

The current Comic Link auction has a Shadowhawk Gallery 1 page in it. The page was penciled by Jim Valentino and inked by Brad Foster. So, it isn’t a Jim Valentino and Chance Wolf page. Here is the page: The page is from a book that was published in April 1994. The auction has 28 days left and the current bid is $700.00. The page sold for just south of $400.00 in August, 2023. Shadowhawk art is hard to gauge due it not coming up for auction that often, and the character didn’t hit the same way that the other Image founder’s books did in the early 1990’s. Was the price in 2023 the outlier or is the current price? Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.

$Blonde superman prototype?$ Funnily enough I got in a rough spicy detective with a superman ad on the back. Never knew DC went blue.

One thing I was always keen on was the return of old long unseen characters brought back in new modern ways... in this case Enemy Ace. This squarebound book also had the added enticement of Garth Ennis scripting...

I think for the majority of creators it makes sense to go Yellow label, if available. But for big names that charge a graded premium that's greater than the yet-to-be-determined verification fee, or for creators that won't do CGC signatures at public signings (e.g. Todd McFarlane), I could see it making sense. As for creators getting the extra money from a signature up-charge, the pessimist in me wants to say that's not going to be true with any artist that isn't representing themself.

It's the FINAL (and presumably harder to find) issue of Hitman! Again, I was a big Garth Ennis fan and I'm not totally sure if I stayed with this series the whole way, but it's very possible with this last issue showing up. I actually read it after opening the box just to see how things turned out for "Hitman" Tommy Monaghan... I won't give away the ending, but have to say it was perfect. Farewell Tommy...
