  1. Past hour
  2. Ha, I'm *mostly* interested in reading (which is why I ask), though I do occasionally get some finer specimens that'll go unread.
  3. You may be right. would have bid on that had I been sure. The auction catalogue itself made me aware there’s some controversy there.
  4. The Detective 1 went crazy DETECTIVE COMICS No. 1 (pbagalleries.com)
  5. You can take a peek at sold prices on ebay to get an idea of price differences on printings (colors).
  6. I had a hard time getting life insurance in my forties as I was very overweight, smoked, drank, with high blood pressure and had a bad family history. I heard an ad from a guy named Big Lou who claimed he could get insurance for people like us, and he did. I got a million-dollar policy and a second key-person policy for the business. He still advertises, but I dropped the insurance years ago. His rates were great when I used him. If and when you pay off your mansion, 3X salary should be plenty if it is just your wife.
  7. I sold Ian my Detective comics 3 for 11k in 2004 and I was going to bid but had to finish a break job just got home and it sold for 6k I just got in touch with Ian, earlier and he said they all went for far less than he paid.
  8. I thought some of the strongest prices were on beater, restored, and conserved copies. Lots of shallow water demand for these books. Like this one I thought got a great price:
  9. The catalogs for this sale are fantastic. Kudos to Ivan for that. And I'm not saying that just because he quoted me and others from posts on this site.
  10. Depends on if you're going to read them or not. Abridgement is all over the place on pbs, it's usually notated somewhere on the cover or inside whether it's abridged or "NOT ONE WORD CUT!"
  11. I thought there were a LOT of strong prices. But there were a few deals to be had, and I'm glad I got one.
  12. It needs to be sold with the Flash GA comics. Likewise, Ivan needs to put the S&S Science Fiction fanzine "Superman" issue previously owned by Otto Binder and Dick Lupoff and signed by S&S with the Superman GA comics.
  13. Hi, Looking for a grade on this copy of FF 45 that's just arrived for grading - so there won't be long to wait for it to come in! Biggest question for me here is the effect of the crease BRFC. Thanks, as always, for your time and expertise!
  14. I've seen a 9.8 with a spine that looked rougher than the one on my 9.0 Far from being perfectly flat and aligned.
  15. I don't know if it does or doesn't lead to more bias. My overall point is that the scenario you laid out is plausible, but equally plausible scenarios exist to explain why and how this copy ended up as the first 9.9 to be graded in close to 25 years. It's hard to ignore the great marketing opportunity to feed the modern 9.9/10.0 initiative by having a mega key from 1975 hit the 9.9 mark for the first time. It's a great way to usher in a new paradigm where 9.8 is no longer considered a sort of glass ceiling on submission expectations for moderns, coppers, or late bronze. Whether that's what is happening here or not, I don't think a tin foil hat is required to spot the marketing opportunity.
  16. My much worse copy doesn't have any color rub there. What's interesting is there's another GSX 1 from the same submission with the same defect, likely from the two of them being packed together with other squarebounds in whatever collection these were in.
  17. I enjoyed my few conversations with him, and I wish I'd had more. He'd forgotten more about this hobby and its history than I'll ever know. Rest in Peace.
  18. Yes, I realize it's color rub over the staple but it's not a publisher defect, it's from the book being slid in and out from between other books, moving around in a box, etc. The color is missing due to what happens after the manufacturing. So it's either acceptable damage for a 9.9....or it's sloppy grading. They won't say it's sloppy grading because of the press it's getting. But that reason would make sense based on the examples we see in the QC thread for the past decade.
  19. A giant of the industry has passed.
