  3. That is a pretty good profit margin (IMO). 66 - 150%. I would take that all day long. I remember hearing Warren Buffett talk about when he was 7 years old, he would be a six pack of Coca-Cola for 25 cents and then sell each bottle for 5 cents. Thus he was making a 5 cent profit on a 25 cent investment. 20% is not bad, but not as good as buying comics at 2 - 3 cents and selling them for 5 cents. Then again, every bottle of coke is the same (whereas some of those comics may have gone unpurcahsed at 5 cents). I think many people in this thread have made good points. IMO a dealer has a right to make a profit. Heck, I want dealers to make a profit, as I am not a dealer; I am a collector. As a collector, I want dealers to continue to seek out books for me to purchase and profit gives them that incentive. Now, I think SOME dealers are "greedy", however, every buyer and seller has a choice on who they choose to do business with and who they choose to avoid. There are lots of dealers out there to choose from, as well as many other resources available to sell your books (if you choose to do so). I don't know the exact price point (percentage) a dealer should pay for any given book, however, I do know that there are costs associated with buying, holding, and selling books. These costs include both real costs (fees, storage, transport, shinkage, etc) as well as less obvious costs (the opportunity cost of doing something else with those funds while they hold onto the book in question - which could either go up or down in value during the time it is held). There are many things to factor in when considering the OP's very good question, and I am sorry I cannot provide a more solid answer. Thankfully, I am not planning to sell any books in the near future, so perhaps I will leave this dilema to those who will be left with the burden of my collection once I go to that great comic con in the sky.

  5. @Still Only 35c Hi - Thanks for the link and welcome to what is surely one of the more niche threads on the CGC. Can't imagine why I didn't find your channel before, although the number of comic related threads on You Tube is pretty startling.
  6. Oh, I know. I wasn't even aware of Okajimas until probably 3 years ago or so. I figure it never hurts to ask...someone might have one they would let go for cheap, or at least reasonably priced. I have tried to get one example from every pedigree for a video series I am doing. Videos are posted on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/@ComicBookVeteran Always open to new information on any of the pedigrees. I need to do more and get them posted. PDG
  7. Neal claimed so much of his art was stolen that I would be afraid he would have said art was stolen even as he took my cash and sold and handed it to me.

  9. Here's my advice. I started out exactly the same way. Over time, I realized that I could not get pages that I really wanted by sticking to my limited budget. I found a few tricks to pay for stuff (such as using PayPal 6 months interest free credit -- so I could buy something and pay it off over time), but ultimately, I had to adjust my parameters and expectations. I still try to stick within a budget, however. But what I've found is that the more art you scroll through and look at, the more selective you get. I highly recommend spending about an hour a day just scrolling through the new art listings on CAF, or Comic Art Tracker or even eBay. You will develop a much better eye, and it will help you learn value as well. Every once in a while, a page will pop up that you just know you have to have, and you should go for it if its within reasonable reach. But you still have to have budget discipline. One thing I've found is that even if you miss on a page that you really want, you mostly get over it after a while and something else will come along that you also like. I am speaking, of course, from the perspective of someone who is a middle, to low mid-tier collector. A true historic grail page is always going to be out of my reach. But pages within my (our?) range do pop up from time to time. The only downside to my method is that you have to sift through a lot of dreck to find that needle in the haystack.

  13. I wonder if we shouldn't stop using the term "Fair Market Value." If that's what prices listed here and there are supposed to represent, an offer of less would have to be "unfair." It's too bad that all those lower-priced sales aren't necessarily reflected in published pricing. OTOH, I'm a "market" guy and people should charge what the market will bear. If you're running a business, you have different metrics than a collector does. The idea of a market is to recognize those different motivators and hope that the two can meet somewhere both are satisfied if not pleased. I agree that if you accept a price for one of your books that's unsatisfying, that's on you.
  14. Wait till somebody to reholders this with a 9.8.
  15. Luckily, I attended UC Berkeley during 1973-76, and frequently purchased from Bob. I remember attending the BerkeleyCon in April 1973 and buying Weird Science 19 from Bob. Bob always found interesting ephemera. I remember prying the Donald Duck cartoon poster “Drip Drippy Donald” loose from Bob for $60. Sadly, I traded the poster and a bunch of SA Marvels for my first copy of Four Color 9, and never found another copy of the poster.
  16. We know that Transworld took an astonishingly good stab at reprinting the entire Marvel back catalogue in the 1970's, but actually Odham's made a remarkable fist of it as well in the 60's. Considering that they were really only in the super hero biz for a couple of years, they took a swing at every Marvel title, including Nick Fury and Sgt. Fury, except Daredevil who was only in the Fantastic summer special. They also came pretty close to hitting the buffers on a few of them (they were about 5 issues behind Hulk when they finished, 4 behind the X men and they burnt the whole run of Giant Man).
  17. This. As incredible as Marvel's record was from the release of "Iron Man" through the final Avengers movie, its record since then has been equally incredible. But unfortunately, incredibly bad rather than incredibly good. It seems like it's just been flop after flop.
  18. No I have not watched that interview ... I had assumed you were just talking out your.....or being sarcastic. Apologies. Doesn't look to be official yet though, and I agree if they are going to pre-screen for 9.9s that's probably going to hurt the value on 9.9s and probably devalue 9.8s in general too. Would be a really dumb move from CGC for a lot of reasons. It would be an implicit guarantee that they'll have to hand out more 9.9s, otherwise why would anyone ever pay the price for the screening. And if there's more 9.9s, they obviously become less scarce, and if 9.9s are more common...9.8s lose their appeal to a lot of people as well maybe. I think it would upset a lot of the collecting base. I wonder if the service would be meant more for the people who send in 100 copies of a freshly printed modern book, vs sending in SA/BA/CA books expecting 9.9s? We'd have to see how its all implemented of course. That all said, even if they did implement the 9.9 screening...I'm still fully confident that as long as another 9.9 GSX-1 didn't come out before this auction closes, there's way more than enough dumb money in this hobby from people who never read these boards to propel this particular copy (that doesn't look much like you'd think a 9.9 would with the defects people have pointed out) well higher than the 264k the highest graded 1 of 5 MS5 got.
  19. The problem, at least for me, is that one person showed up here with one ID and gave an email. Then another person showed up, didn't say they had anything to do with the first person, and gave the same email. Later, when confronted, they claimed to be associates. I've no idea what is true or not, but the way they came to this thread seemed shady, at least to me. I've been wrong before, and will be wrong again, and this may be one of those occasions, but something doesn't feel right here.
  20. Good call on the Fantastic and Terrific UK books. In case you don't know, most of those Power House Pin-ups were drawn by a very young Barry Windsor-Smith. I recently shared a video with my almost full run of both titles and showed all the covers and Pin-ups on my YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/live/pcOn5-WnXsk?si=gJJfe1ZHm45RCN7F
  21. And who's to say that the staple indent and color rub wasn't worsened (or even created) by the pressing process that the book likely went through. That would clearly make both handling defects.
