Love these books, dawn of the comicbook as we know it,

Me too Jack (thumbs u I've got a little pile of them & they're fun. not too expensive & show a cool snapshot of the time period.

I agree they are a great backbone series of the dawn of comicbooks....

He is a smattering of early numbers.......many had different cover for back cover.....neat and inexpensive books.......jb

Like you and Jimbo, I love those early Famous Funnies. I tried for years to complete them all, but was never able to do it. The #1 eluded me and eventually I tired of the quest.

I will admit Billbo, there's a certain ........ serenity that comes from just buying what comes my way & not trying to complete the run. Ideally it'd be fun to have a complete set, but I could say that about nearly every comic title :)

I'm with you Jimbo. I'm doing a little of both now. Some runs I don't want all of the books. Others I do.

We're fishin' the same pond my friend :hi:

I've got a soft spot for a few of these myself. Here's one that seems like about the right time to share, give or take a day. Happy 80th birthday, FF #6.

  2. A big thank you goes out to cosmic farmboy for letting this book go from his collection,a book I think he would have preferred to keep. And a GIANT-SIZE thank you to Frisco Larson for a gift I'll never forget.

I've been looking for a copy of this book for several years without any luck. You could easily say it had become number one on my want list.I love the Zip title, and the cover really knocks me out.So imagine my surprise when I invited a close friend over for a little geeking only to find this book in his recently acquired stack...then he proceeds to flash a big smile and exclaim happy birthday geek! Needless to say I was on :cloud9: what a tremendously thoughtful thing to do.

Thanks again Frisco!! I do believe I'll have this book in my collection until the end.

The Zip 3 is now in a far better place. Here's to happy endings! (thumbs u

  3. I really like a lot of the Avon Strange Worlds title. I was at the show for a little bit on Saturday, saw that book, thought about it for a while, decided to maybe come back for it later, and then got sidetracked by a couple MLJ Blue Ribbons at Terry O'Neill's booth. Glad to see at least it didn't leave town!

  4. #5

This is a SWEET #5. Looks fairly high grade. You thinking of slabbing it?

The census shows a 7.0 & an 8.5 as the two highest they've graded, so your's is in rarified air.

Thanks. I plan to have it graded eventually but not in a hurry.

I have a low grade raw #9 to add to the club that I will aim to scan this weekend.

    Hey Rob :hi:

I'll stake a claim for having the lowest grade #9.

    And here's a #50 for the club:

  5. Here is my raw copy I bought from MrBedrock eons ago.I just love the look on the Red Skull's face.

    ------------------

Very pretty copy, Russ! It's a fun Red Skull cover, that's for sure.

I also like Schomburg's pencilling of Cap himself on the covers of #3 and #4, before Timely seemed to settle on a "lankier" house style for him.

  6. Here ya go:

    You know, D,

    1. based on what you've posted in this thread, and

    2. remembering a few weeks back at 143ksk's place how you seemed perfectly content lingering over a very modest copy of Weird Comics #3 while the rest of us passed around MLJ's, EC's, Timely's, etc...

...well I'm starting to think you're kind of a Fox Comics fan. hm

Congrats on those high grade Zoots. Beautiful collection.

  7. Hey Steve, very cool indeed. Always amazing things like this survive.

This piqued my curiosity a bit. Looks like Archie was about to settle into a nice radio spot for a number of years. According to myoldradio.com, Archie began on the Blue Network radio system on May 31, 1943 (see Pep 42 cover?), switched to the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1944, and then continued on NBC from 1945 until September 5, 1953.

And I have to admit I'd never heard the phrase "Eastern War Time" before.
