  1. Thanks for the report and pics.  I haven't been to a show since covid.  I find I can find anything I want on the internet and I don't have to deal with the crowds, travel, hotels.  It might be different if I was still trying to complete runs and wanted the 50 cent and dollar boxes at shows, but nowadays I'm only looking for higher priced items and I can shop better on the internet.

Going to a couple more nice high grade science fiction titles for a minute...

The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart Of The World by Harlan Ellison   Avon V2300     1st Printing July 1969       $40

Cover art by Leo and Diane Dillon. A very tough Ellison 1st PB to get in this high a grade.

Very Fine Minus/Very Fine.  Bright whites are a standout, super square, fresh, with white pages. Covers have a few finger bends and a pressure mark on the back cover, light surface wear but this is a new looking book.

Dormitory Women  by R. V. Cassill   Lion Books No. 216   July 1954     $20

Another scarce Lion Books PBO.    A notorious title with a classic GGA cover that remains uncredited.

Very Good/Very Good plus. Looks better but has a split at the top back spine, not visible from the front. Spine is still tight and solid. Pages slightly uneven. Otherwise looks nice with no hard creases and wear is mostly around the edges.

Jailbait by William Bernard  Popular Library #392  1st Printing  1952    $15

Classic Belarski JD cover art and one of the most famous pb covers ever for sure.

Very Good. Spine is solid with slight slant. Has a bunch of light creases and general wear, book has a bend to it from storage that would probably straighten out with a backing board in the bag. Covers retain some gloss, pages tight and supple. A must have that still looks nice on display.

Nice to see your post Mike - I've been reading your blog for many years now and I always enjoy reading about the books that you've purchased and your travel adventures!

Nice to see your post!  I’m still chasing after those Dave Stevens covers.  Not as good as you as unearthing those rare ones.

  9. I just turned 60 this year.  I guess I've have lost interest in comic collecting, but I think mostly because I have most of what I want.  Since covid hit, I've been working on completing runs I started years and years ago.  Below I've listed the titles I've completed the last couple of years.  At this point in my life, I don't have the energy to start new big runs, like ECs or pre-hero Marvel.  So that's why I like the idea of a small run like the E. Taylor photo covers.

I'm still trying to get a copy of every comic with a Matt Baker cover.  I'm also trying to get a copy of every Dennis the Menace comic ever published.  I've hit a brick wall with both -- the comics I need are hardly ever offered for sale.  I probably have a better chance of finishing the Dennis goal as, when the comics do turn up for sale, they don't cost much.  Baker obviously is much different.

My biggest grail right now is to find anything signed by both Bettie Page and Dave Stevens.  You'd think there would be something as they were friends, but I've never seen anything.

My wife often says I still spend a ton of money on comics.  That's true.  Finishing some of the runs were expensive.  Also, when I do buy something, it tends to be expensive.  Like, my favorite character has always been Spider-man.  I'm missing 2 key issues:  Amazing Fantasy 15 -- and I'll never get that one, it's gotten too expensive.

And ASM 129 -- I have a coverless copy but I wanted a nice copy. So I finally got a nice copy last year and it was pretty expensive as you can imagine.

I do know.  The Girl Comics is the most desirable.

    Girl Comics 3

    Film Stars Romances 2

    Famous Stars 5

    New Romances 11

    Great Lover Romances 15

    True Movie and Television 1

    Miss America V4#3

    Sweet Sixteen 4

Thanks for the list.  I've gotten to the point in my life where I've gotten most of the comics I want.  The last couple of years I've been finishing up some last runs (Sandman, Swamp Thing ....).  My only collecting goal right now is Matt Baker covers, and they are hard to come by (as I'm sure you know).  There's the current Heritage auction that I'm following, but I'm sure the ones I want will be out of my price range -- as my sights are on retirement and my priority is travel, not comics, there's only so high I'll go.  At some point in your life, at least for me, your priorities become experiences, not comic books.

But this list is fun.  My parents loved Elisabeth Taylor so it'll be special from that point of view.  And it's only 8 comics.  Thanks for the suggestion.

If you're going after those, might I suggest a small adjacent challenge and include the Liz Taylor covers

The comics in the original post are actually mine.  I was just wondering if I had all the MM photo covers.

How many photo covers does Liz Taylor have, do you know?
