  1. Is it good or bad? I have never had a comic pressed before so I decided to conduct an experiment. I took 4 comics that in my opinion were no higher than 4.0-5.5 (and ones that I didn't particularly care about either), had them pressed and graded. They all came back as 7.0s. I know that this is a sensitive subject for some collectors, but I don't really see a downside when it comes to pressing. I have had books stored for years in boxes and looked as though they had been pressed. I don't know much about the process but apparently if it is done right, you can't even tell that it was done. It seems to be gaining acceptance as well. The pictured comic was mailed to me in a soft mailer with no cardboard or support of any kind. It was bent all over but not creased and looked horrible. Thoughts? See more journals by richard8158
  2. 200 out of 289 I feel like I crossed some sort of milestone yesterday, now having 200 issues in the set graded. My goal was to have from #100 and up at 9.0 or better. Although there are more than a dozen that need to be up graded and still some missing to achieve the goal, I feel like I'm closing in. Below #100 is a different story, where I think the grades will be mostly mid grades. The Quality comics are hard to find even in mid grade. http://comics.www.collectors-society.com/registry/comics/PeopleSetDetail.aspx?PeopleSetID=80699 See more journals by richard8158
  3. Sending this gem out today....express. I've finally had the opportunity to grab a copy of the ever fleeting adventure 38. Upon intitial view this books looks great. I was stunned when I unwrapped it out of the box. There is a small hole (very small) in the mans shirt on the cover. And "apparently" some glue on the spine. But I can't even see it... The pages are flat and have a nice cream to them. But not brittle. There's almost zero spine roll. No major tears. I'm very excited to see what cgc will give this. I'd be happy with a 4.0 a 5 or higher I'd be ecstatic. Will cgc count the small amount of glue on the cover as restoration? The glue I'm assuming is from long ago and by no means is it holding the cover to the book... What do you guys think?? Either way, these are tough to find. I'm happy I was finally able to obtain one.... See more journals by mrbriantaylor
  4. Where does "high grade" begin? I was looking on ebay yesterday and saw 6.0 and 6.5 copies of GI Combat advertised as high grade. I never thought of anything below 7.5 or 8.0 as high grade. I'd be curious to know how others see this designation as well. See more journals by richard8158
  5. The Stats For All To See Re: Detective Comics 411. Thanks to those of you who replied to my last journal. Talia's popularity has definitely increased as of late. In the Comiclink auction that featured the 9.8 copy, there was also a 9.0 that went for $761. By contrast, in a Comic Connect auction two years ago, a 9.4 went for $580! And just a few hours ago in an ebay auction, an 8.5 went for $357. Not too uncommon to find this book in 9.4 or lower. I believe there are less than 10 9.6s and only four 9.8s. I may be bidding in the next Comiclink auction in March for an 8.5 that's listed. See more journals by john ivic
  6. Can't afford to keep her! Well, it's been a while since I posted in my journal, and I must say, it was fun when I had the money to do it. I did once have the #1 set for 4 years in a row, until CGC expanded the set type to go to 2002...and that's what pushed me down. So...I lost some interest in the "ol girl" and was considering liquidating her, along with all the other doubles and slightly lower graded that I have. Just wondering what would be a fair price. Does anyone think that $3k is too much? If so, what would be considered a fair asking price for the set? See more journals by Skeester
  7. 1st DC GI Combat & Grey tone #44 I purchased this off ebay a few months ago, and will be sending it off to CGC next week with a couple of others. I haven't even mailed it yet and am already anxious. See more journals by richard8158
  8. First Appearance With An Adams Cover The recent ComicLink auction saw Detective Comics 411, CGC 9.8, go for $8000! The debut of Talia al Ghul, one month before Batman 232. I for one, did not know this book had become so hot. Must have something to do with the fact that Talia is the mother of Batman's son. I guess the best grade I could hope to afford is an 8.5 - probably about $400. Must be nice to be able to afford this one! See more journals by john ivic

  11. I've finally decided to get more serious about collecting pre super hero Flessel covers. As hard as these books are to obtain I'm going to be switching my collecting habits into a more serious approach of buying early detective (pre-batman) and early adventure and more fun books. I still want to finish my EC horror and sci fi runs but as I've been buying more and more Flessel covers the more they spark my attention away from anything else. I just recently picked up an unrestored Detective comics 8 3.0 as well as the ever elusive adventure 38 to add to the handful I already own. I would really like to be in touch with people that are collecting these as well, but the buying market is so small I feel it's hard to meet people in this genre.. Early Detective buyers and Craig Flessel fans hit me up!!!! See more journals by mrbriantaylor
  12. Big Five DC war is going to happen I've made up my mind I'm going to start a Big 5 DC war run. I'm starting with a very small amount of books this run is 1050 books(unless I miscounted)I am not counting the OAAW run after it changes to Sgt. Rock , I'm not counting the G.I. Combats when it was being published by Quality and I'm also not going to include SSWS after it was changed to the Unknown Soldier. I have 34 books to start with and no keys to speak of so the hunt should be fun. I have a plan I'm going to read a book and scan the book I will start with the small amount of books I have and just work my way through as I go. I hope to pick up knowledge as I go. If the book is graded I'm probably not going to crack it out to read butt that doesn't mean I won't add a raw down the road to read. I have my checklist done up. It is so much smaller than my Marvel checklist. The plan is to put a halt starting today on all my other collecting areas and just focus on the War. One thing I'm not going to do is sale any of my other books to prop up my funds for the war books. I will get them as I can and try not to go overboard and over extend myself. 13. The aim - every series, every variant First off, this isn't my main collecting goal. I'm not completely fond of all of the variants out there. There are some I like and some which just seem utterly pointless. I guess the idea of collecting all variant covers is down to preference, some like it, some hate it. That being said, I do like the idea of completing them. As of writing this out there are DW 4th Miniseries (begins March 2016) DW 8th Miniseries DW 9th Miniseries DW 9th Year 1 (begins April 2016) DW 10th Year 1 DW 10th Year 2 DW 11th Year 1 DW 11th Year 2 DW 12th Year 1 DW 12th Year 2 DW Four Doctors Miniseries As many of these are ongoing and they only began in August 2014, it seems like a pretty easy task. However, many are American releases and being in England it's hard to get hold of them for ok prices. More often than not, even without postage they are around $40. Even those that are cheap, the postage is often higher than expected. So as it's not my main collecting goal it is going to be tricky, but as they are ongoing series and relatively cheap it should be easier than most. Below is a list of those known to me which I do not currently own and will be ticking off, and adding to the list as I go. 15. Finger bends? Not complaining about the grades on my last submission, most are what I figured they would be. But as I was going through the graders notes, something kept coming up. Finger bends, now I'm not entirely sure what these are, haven't seen this on any of my previous submissions. But I decided to look at the area where these "finger bends" seemed to be and maybe my eye isn't as good as that of the graders, but I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Now on top of that the comics that I submit are normally out of circulation my LCS normally allows me first pick, valued customer I suppose but that flaw just seems kinda off to me. But hey majority 9.8 and 9.6 so not to upset about it. See more journals by pjallen080483

  17. I have more comics then I thought! Although I've sold well over one-half my collection over the years I still have at least 30 long boxes left. I just found a box of autographed comics (Kirby, Williamson, Krenkel, Thorne, Moench, Layton, Golden, Adkins, Vigil and Byrne so far; as well as my Hulk collection from the Silver Age on. I just finished reviewing my Silver Age Sub-Mariner set. I may need three issues to complete. It's a blast to look at these books I have not looked at in over twenty years. I'm reboarding, rebagging and labeling the books for my private collection, mulling over future sales, books to be submitted to CGC and memories of meeting these creators since 1982. What a great hobby/avocation. See more journals by Greenlama

  19. A lot has changed over the last year Hey everybody guess who's back :3 It's been a crazy year for me. In late 2014 I sold off 90% of my comic collection to move to Los Angeles. I had my first kid, a son named Nolan. Now a little over a year later I'm back to collecting. I want to grow my collection to what it was before I moved. I realize there are a good amount of people who really don't care for me here. All I can say is it's a new year I realize I made mistakes in the past. I'm doing what I can to try and make things right. As some of you may remember sometime last year I had won a book from Rich_Henn on eBay and things got messed up so I was unable to pay and ended up being put on the probation list. Some agreed with the decision, some didn't. Either way I've reached out and tried to make things right more then once and keep getting no response. If you read this Rich know I'm sorry things went down the way they did and want to make up for it. It's a brand new year, time to do what I can to right my wrongs and Move on. Hope people can give me another chance to show I've changed This year it's not about quantity it's about quality. I'm trying to buy a few keys Like to find them raw as their normally a little cheaper than slabs Werewolf by night 32 9.0 or better Strange tales 110 5.0 or better Forever people 1 9.8 Jimmy Olsen 134 8.5 or better Thor 165 8.5 or better Tales of suspense 39 any grade Strange tales 169 9.0 or better New Gods 1 9.8 Hulk 181 8.0 or better That's just a small list I'm trying to get by the end of 2016 See more journals by oceanavekid
  20. The story of a new collector going after the heroes from his childhood and the series that got him into starting a collection of comic books in the first place. I will keep this post updated with every new transaction, flub up, additions to my background/life and more. Hopefully it will be a good read. 10/29/2011 I joined the CGC forums in hopes of collecting a character I had loved growing up, Steven Rogers. Cartoons and video games were my introduction to Rogers growing up, along with the films made in the 70s and in 1990. When finding out the price of the books, the early Cap books, I knew I was in over my head and unless I won the lotto, collecting Cap would be a no go for me unfortunately. I decided to focus my efforts on Deadpool. Complete opposite from Rogers but Wade Wilson was fun to play in the Ultimate Alliance games and that drew me into him. After going through some private messages with some collectors here who wanted to sell some CGC Deadpool titles, I had to pass on this collecting also. At the time I wasn't financially stable enough to start collecting anyone really so I abandoned ship and forgot about comic books and collecting. 02/05/2016 Fast forward to now. I have a MUCH better job than I did when I first joined. It gives me some wiggle room with starting up a hobby. Still not enough to buy a Captain America #1 but maybe one day! I could at least start buying some Cap lots on eBay though! In the last month I had a friend lend me the Deluxe Hardcover Edition of Saga. I asked him about the series after seeing it was an Eisner Award Winner and that IGN named it their Series of 2015 or something to that extent. It was also their 2014 Series also, so back to back wins in that category. I became a little curious about a series regarded that highly, regardless of what I think about IGN for the most part, and figured I would ask my comic book buddy. I started reading the book on a Friday night and couldn't put it down. I became hooked INSTANTLY. After I finished it up I jumped to the trade paperback he also lent me. I had both books read by Saturday evening and immediately jumped back and read them all again, twice in one weekend! I asked my buddy if he had any single issues for sale and he said no, just the trades. He sent me to Midtown Comics website and I immediately got on and grabbed 20-32, all the back issues they had, in addition to 13B. I then jumped on eBay and started looking for 1-19. I found a 2-20 lot and used a MasterCard gift card I received for Christmas and used the full amount on that lot to ensure I won it and I did. Now I'm left with finding #1 raw, currently working on that with a member now, to complete my raw run. While searching for the raw issues I did come across a good deal on a couple of CGC 9.8 copies of #22 and #23 on eBay for $50 shipped and nabbed them up. I have also picked up a 9.8 SS (Vaughn and Staples) #1 first print thanks to a member on here! I have also signed up for a 9.8 subscription from BeachBum and also got a few back issues (16, 17, and 32) he had around. So I have gotten off to a good start on the CGC run. 24. And it's the single highest graded! A few years ago I went to one of my storage facilities out of state, to try and locate my comics which sat there for over 20 yrs. I finally found them, one of the top 2 was Incredible Hulk 181. After submitting for grading, it came back a 9.2. Since I needed the cash, had to sell it. Nonetheless, I did pick up a reprint of Hulk 181 around that time, submitted it for grading, and just got it back. Although it's about a quarter of the size of the original (and about a zillion times less valuable than the original, ), this one came back a 9.8, and it's the single highest graded! Cover is an early version of Hulk 181. And Now...The Wolverine! See more journals by BBOY
  25. A personal goal was hit. I have been busy lately trying to strengthen my collection. My first goal this past year was trying to get the top spot back on my Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery set. I set a goal of December 31st of 2015 to do that and did make it but only by days. It may not stay that way but I am working to complete this set by the end of 2017. I've worked more hours this year than I have in any year of my life so I have had more funds for comics. I also hit the 50,000 point mark and the 250 CGC book mark recently. I know some have single sets with more points but it's a lot for me. This year I want to focus on Journey Into Mystery,Silver Surfer and Swamp Thing sets. Long range I plan on collecting until I retire. Which looks to be around 2022 or 2023. Posted below are a few recent pickups. The Thor is a Pacific Coast which is one of my favorite pedigrees. I've already started on the Journeys and posted two of them. I hope the picture is sized correctly as I used my work phone and not my camera. See more journals by Rockblazer
