  1. Famous last words. If Af 15's go down then the hobby is obviously dead as well. Speaking of "long lines", there are, as I type, 25 copies of Fantasy #15, in various flavors, on eBay alone. If there were people in line to buy them, why would so many copies be available for sale? That there are lots of people who would pay "for the right price" or "if they had the money", but that doesn't really count, does it...? I would buy one for the right price. Am I "in line" to buy one? No. There are long lines for Fantastic Comics #3. There are plenty of people in line for a copy of that book....any copy. And there have been times...hard though it may seem...that even the "third most important comic" has gone down in demand, and therefore value. I don't believe in comic books as an "investment". But AF 15 still has another solid decade of growth in front of it. Easy. -J. Why is it easy to say that AF #15 has another ten years of growth, and what stops that "solid" growth after that decade?
  2. Agree its why I passed on the book entirely. I may regret it later, but that oversize just is a big turn off no way to store well. I don't know.... treasury bag and board, spine side down in a magazine size box with all my other treasury books. There seems to be a new one every month or two, so someone besides me buys them. Eventually CGC will slab them, and I will be ready. And I am sure the print runs on all the modern treasury books is small! Why would CGC slab these? The market is minuscule, they'd need to order an entirely new slab size (not to mention spending the money to develop it), and they've shown that they won't even invest in another encapsulation machine that everyone knows they need to improve the bottleneck that is killing TATs. From an economic standpoint it is unlikely they do this, and even if they did it doesn't solve the problem of them being awkward to store.
  3. I borrowed this quote from a post in the modern thread on these variants, and I thought it would be better placed here. This sticker thing intrigues me, and I have one of my own to see if anyone would know anything about it. I found this Batman #414 on eBay, and thought it looked like a Bullet sticker over the bar code, which is exactly what it is (just received the actual book in the mail today). This book seems a bit old to have been dragged into the "Bullet era" we've been talking about. Does anyone else have examples of these bullet stickers?
  4. Top of my list are Nova #1 and Ms. Marvel #1. People who are buying CGC 9.8s today for those prices are going to wish they hadn't. The Hughes variant of Spider-Gwen #1 selling for $300 raw this past week is another fine example of a book I'd happily sell short if there were such a thing for comics.
  5. As far as I can determine it is the 1st full appearance for at least Ellen :shrug: This hobby is incredibly fickle, and often there is little rhyme or reason to anything. I'll probably get rid of my two treasury copies if I can because I don't collect treasury books and they're in my way... another reason people choose to ignore it I'm sure. Its not fickle the Image oversized book is a one-shot never was a series. This current run is the series and its a different company. The tv option and series is the 215 version. Those are all drawbacks for the Treasury. It is totally fickle - the main protagonist (so far) clearly first appears in the treasury edition from Image. The publisher is irrelevant, it is creator owned. Tim has come on here and clearly has stated that was his first unpolished volley into the comic book world. She more polished in this series. Its like the Gambit uncanny x-men 266 versus the annual issue, the comic book market has made its decision. You can choose to rage against the machine but it is what it is. Just like you stated for many post earlier about how you didn't think the NYCC was worth much cause its a second print. Market has decided - not sure what complaining about it will solve. Ha the market hasn't even started. That was my thought. Most people aren't even aware of the series. this is kind of my thought process... the market is fairly new... i think if/once the tv series takes off the treasury will get more recognition... I have a pretty strong feeling the treasury is never going to be what a #1 215 Ink book is. Even if CGC started slabbing them... few collectors would gravitate toward them unless there is some sort of odd resurgence in the format. I get why T&M actually went with the format, it was neat, but it killed it for most collectors who just don't want to deal with it. It's easier to ignore the fact that it is a first appearance; maybe if we were talking about something the size of a magazine - similar to Starlord - things would be different. Are you kidding? Treasury format was great for this book! Such large pages of great art is awesome! Especially for this book because the art is so detailed. It's just great to look at. And if CGC started slabbing treasurys you would see a surge in the format. Remember that the comic industry is still a huge collectors market. If the ability to slab treasurys was there, more would be made. If more were made, CGC would follow suit. And ya, maybe in the long term for an average collector who is getting into this book because of the show, a #1a Would be their priority, but in terms of hardcore collectors market, the treasury will still be THE book to get. And again, if anyone has a NM treasury they would like to sell, send me a PM. regardless of value, I think the treasury is a really nice book. But again, it's an opinion, so argue all you want. It's insignificant. Lastly, why is everything Frozen? There are way better movies out there!!! Granted the sisters are hot and if there were deleted scenes where they made out, I'd be all over this movie too... But I can name ten better Disney movies that deserve the attention. Pretty sure if CGC started slabbing treasury books, the industry wouldn't start producing many more of them. CGC collectors are some tiny minority of comic collectors. To outsiders, even other comic collectors, our group is a weird niche that is confusing and not very welcoming to newcomers. Slabbing them doesn't solve the problem of storing them, and may very well make it worse. And, you made me break the quote nest.
  6. I couldn't disagree more - the problem with those last two movies, especially the most recent one, is that they were terrible. That has nothing to do with interest waning in Peter Parker as Spider-man... I don't even know how you would arrive at that conclusion. Well since you asked. Let's start off with some critics reviews of the last Spidey movie. There's a reoccurring theme here: I saw the movie, I read many of the reviews. The -script just sucked, it has nothing to do with Peter Parker. Nothing. People are tired of seeing the same two Spider-man movies, how is that the character dragging it down? I agree with a lot of the points you're making about Miles, but this one is out of left field for me. No one is going to see an awesome Spider-man movie trailer, and then when the mask comes off go "Awww man! That Peter Parker guy again?! I'm out." It isn't going to happen. Ever. I didn't see any of the rebooted films in theaters, and barely paid attention on cable. I'm just bored to death of Peter, Aunt May, Uncle Ben, and MJ. Miles or even Spider-Gwen would get me back in the theatres. It's easy to get bored with poorly made films with too many villains. Bringing in Miles will do nothing if the films are still poorly made with too many villains. Would Miles have saved ASM 2?
  7. Especially if Marvel wants to stay away from a third version of his origin in recent memory. They can't bring someone in who isn't clearly Peter Parker, unless they either don't take his mask off all film so you don't know who he is (unlikely, since heroes never keep their masks on in these films), or somehow find it to be a good idea to build an origin into the Avengers film. They can change the actor playing Peter, but they can't change Peter without really setting themselves up for explanations they probably don't want to get into.

I can't remember the last time we had this many books that were on fire. This is the part that concerns me. What sustains this momentum, and how does the momentum ease? Slowly or quickly? I've thought the same thing for a while now. Every book is on fire now with no regard for print run or staying power of the character. $300+ on an Ultimate Fallout #4 slab is just dumb imo when I can buy a low grade Spiderman 129 for that price. Something has to give at some point. I've had a similar thought to yours in regards to either ASM #31 or #121 with the Spider-Gwen phenomenon. For what you spend on some soon-to-be-worthless variants you could have some much more key books if you like the character to the tune of several hundred bucks.
  11. Thank goodness that it's become a topic that's being addressed nationally, all the way down to a local level. As comic book fans, I'll bet there's a high percentage of people here that have been bullied in their lives, and I think we all are happy to see it get the attention that it deserves. And this may bring up bad memories when someone feels attacked on a message board. Emotions are complex things to sort out, and if someone experiences similar internal reactions to different circumstances it is easy to see how one (being bullied in real life) could color one's perceptions in a different realm like an internet chatboard.

If anything it is worse online because people have no fear of repercussions due to the anonymous nature and physical separation of the Internet. What you call "bullying" is simply people being people. You are abusing the word by applying it to people being "mean." If one can readily confront, walk away from, or avoid the situation, they are not, under ANY circumstances, being "bullied." I agree that you can argue about my interpretation of another's behavior and whether or not I should have feeled bullied. While ultimately it is about how the person feels about a situation that is important, it is subjective to outside parties. While a "captive audience" may be overstating the case, some sort of leverage is needed in a bullying situation so the victim can't remove themselves. For example, it'd be tough for me to bully the president, as I have no leverage and thus no ability to victimize. Tough to bully my boss for the same reason, power imbalance is not in my favor. Clearly cyber bullying is a real thing, with people harnessing the power of the internet to place a victim in a bad situation that it is very difficult to get away from (isn't social media grand?). I'm just failing to see how it applies here. Where is the imbalance being exploited to inflict harm, other than in the sense of one party feeling that their side of the discussion is unsupported?

Yes, much like with GotG, the individual members 1st appearances are worth more in most cases than the first of the team. But again, the first app. of the multiple forms of the teams also good for some nice change. Can't disagree with any of that.   16. You're right, to an extent. #100 is the first appearance of the team, but that sort of thing never has the significance that first appearances of characters will have. So it does have some significance, but in a much more minor way. You're tossing a broad blanked over a very specific situation. X-Force is not the Avengers where people know the team members individually. I highly doubt any of the X-Force will have a solo movie and therefore not the recognition as individual characters. At any rate, I would gladly take an Avengers #1, which has "much more minor" significance. Avengers #1 is more minor than New Mutants #100? I'm sure you don't mean that. Whether or not the team members were better known at the formation of the team (arguably all of those heroes are huge now, but in 1963/1964 they weren't exactly household names either), the formation of the Avengers was a bit bigger deal than the formation of X-Force. I'm really looking forward to the days where people stop relying on movies as the primary driver of a comic's value. Even if you want to rely on this rationale, the fact that the individual team members of X-Force wouldn't warrant solo movies gives some evidence to their relative importance in the grand scheme of things. It doesn't say a lot for the team.

Nobody is saying it's a $400 book, but it's selling for more than $1 which is what it was 2 years ago.   20. Not at all. Today, comic-con is cool, Big Bang Theory is a top show, the Avengers sequel is the most anticipated movie and Guardians of the Galaxy was last year's biggest hit. Demand is at an all time high, all while print media in general continues to decline. This is a peak (or plateau), not a step on an upward climb. Will key silver age issues hold their value? I think so. But will they continue to increase in value? I don't think they will. I don't see increased demand in the future and that's a pre-requisite for increased value. I agree with everything you said except that we are currently at the peak. I believe we may be approaching it, but with the blockbuster movie schedule both Marvel and DC is pumping out through 2020, I think we still have some runway for prices to increase. The extent of the increase largely depends on the current market price and its room for growth plus the increased upcoming movie awareness, but I don't think we are going to stall just yet. My guess, we will see a refocus of value against top keys (Amazing Fantasy 15, Hulk 1, Avengers 1 - and the well known hero golden keys among a few others - probably only 20-30 or so books on this list) and a decline against many minor keys with characters that only stick for a single movie or fade back into "C" and "D" list status. For the most part the hobby should reset itself when major pop culture moves on from the hero flicks into something else for a time (nothing is most popular forever). Time horizon, probably 15 years or so. Just my . I'm not convinced that having a movie slate out to 2020 is that much of a guarantee that prices even remain stable, let alone continue to go up. That's a long time to hold anyone's attention, let alone tie up their money in comics. Lots of things can happen between now and then that will refocus attention away from blockbuster super hero films. Maybe it is just the fact that its Spider-Gwen #1 release day, but when I see the week's new books sucked into a frenzy of flipping on a consistent basis this market is looking more and more unsustainable. I'm not any more comforted by the Bronze or SA markets. It's the go-go 90s again with a market full of people who like comics as long as the prices always go up, which they're convinced will always happen because this time is different.
