Copper Era newsstand vs direct - variants or not?
StuporMan replied to StuporMan's topic in Copper Age Comic Books
I remember having to grab issues out of the back of spinner racks the first day or they'd all be bent in half from people flipping through them like files in a folder -
Has anyone ever seen a spider-man 2099 #1 foil error comic?
StuporMan replied to rckstr1253's topic in Copper Age Comic Books
I have a couple of these as well, signed in Austin before CGC existed. I laugh (but cry inside) when I see signature CoAs now... -
Copper Era newsstand vs direct - variants or not?
StuporMan posted a topic in Copper Age Comic Books
Are newsstand copies considered variants during this era? I remember both direct and newsstand copies being plentiful. I guess one could assume that the newsstand copies were handled by non-collectors and therefore usually found in lower grade. Is this all there is behind the perceived newsstand rarity? -

Bronze age comics that are heating up on eBay...
StuporMan replied to PeterPark's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
I think going off a guide that has been a market standard for nearly 40 years is not a bad idea, even if you don't agree with the standard. That's why it's called a guide right? Age classification doesn't really matter anywhere except these boards anyway. CGC doesn't really care except for when it comes to pricing, that's why they did away with the "modern"/red tier label. Yes, it's called a guide. Some people refer to it as the bible but it's a guide. I've bought and enjoyed Overstreet guides for 30 years but I don't take everything they say as gospel any more than I accept CGC grades as gospel Well said. Might want to add GPA in there. If GPA took all sources of comic sales, including dealers it would be a lot more useful. Most of the data in there I can get myself from eBay or Heritage. Then again GPA is just pricing, it has nothing to add when it comes to the population, categorizing, or describing of comics. Besides, I only buy the Overstreet guide for the articles... -
Silver age comics that are heating up
StuporMan replied to rabidwolf's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
Some books that are heating up (considering no movies in the works) Teen titans (showcase and series) 1st app of Beast Boy in Doom Patrol (probably due to movie/tv speculation) Black Panther appearances in FF and ToS are on fire Wonder Woman Flash (especially Reverse Flash) (low population) Anything pre-hero Marvel/Atlas in any grade Batman/Detective sci-fi covers mid-grade or higher -
I upgraded from the Microtek 9600 (SCSI) to the 9800 (USB) and I'm very happy with it.

Bronze age comics that are heating up on eBay...
StuporMan replied to PeterPark's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
Overstreet isn't the be all and end all any more than CGC is. Overstreet publishes a big book every year. They have a huge board of "advisors". People pay money for advertising in it. I am just a fat old guy with a bunch of comics, and not even particularly good ones after I sold my smattering of SA keys and GA slabs (and most of my good OA) to pay for renovations to this darn house. Who am I to decide what is CA and what is not? I think going off a guide that has been a market standard for nearly 40 years is not a bad idea, even if you don't agree with the standard. That's why it's called a guide right? Age classification doesn't really matter anywhere except these boards anyway. Signature Series KUDOS Thread... You know the deal
StuporMan replied to Pirate's topic in The Signature Room
More kudos to the CGC Team at Phoenix ComiCon this year! I've been going to cons for years, but the CGC reps were like skillful CIA Ops when navigating those crowds Jae Lee was very friendly, worked really fast and the comics turned out great! Hopefully they'll all be back this winter -
When will/will the WALKING DEAD bubble burst?

I think this thread will outlast the bubble. -
There are over 1400 9.8 New Mutants 98
StuporMan replied to Rickyrudd-migration's topic in Comics General
I think you can also accurately gauge the heat on a character by looking at the demand for their 2nd appearance. Especially when the first appearance is unattainable by the average collector. Deadpool's 2nd appearance in X-Force #2 has a census of 174 9.8s and selling briskly ~$30 -
Another Great Reason to NEVER buy a PGX Book or deal with them
StuporMan replied to bcc's topic in Comics General
I've cracked out a few PGX books with fantastic grades to see popped staples and missing interior bits. That was before I heard of this guy. NEVER AGAIN -

When will/will the WALKING DEAD bubble burst?
StuporMan replied to The-Collector's topic in Comics General
Most likely. I don't really care when or if the WD bubble pops. I just want the TV show to get interesting again. I'm disappointed this past month. I am tired of introducing lots of new members just so there can be a big blood bath. I'm totally bored at the thought of another assault on the prison by another group led by the Governor. I haven't read the comic, does the TV show diverge from the comic in this regard? Or is this what basically happens in the comic too? Because if the comic is like this then I guess I'm not missing anything. -

+1 VueScan works great and worth every $. Especially if you have an older scanner or lost your scanner software.

Excellent research. I find the last two panels particularly chilling with the Red Skull's demeanor when facing Cap. The Red Skull seems so confident and cavalier sitting a mere foot away from him.

According to Overstreet, the 1st Silver Age appearance of the Silver Age Red Skull in in Tales of Suspense #65. Technically though, the "Red Skull" in issue #65 was not the REAL Red Skull, but an impersonator by the name of Maxon. In the following issue #66, Captain America discovers this and meets the REAL Red Skull, who then explains his origin. But Overstreet only designates issue #66 as the origin of the Red Skull. So in my opinion, not only is issue #66 the first appearance of the REAL Silver Age Red Skull, but more important because this explains his origin. The Overstreet pricing of issue #65 vs. #66 suggests otherwise. The reason I bring this up is because this same thing happened with Captain America in Strange Tales #114. This is the actually the first Silver Age appearance of "Captain America", pre-dating Avengers #4. But in Strange Tales #114, this was an impostor (The Acrobat) wearing the Captain America suit fighting the Human Torch. Now look at the Overstreet price difference between Strange Tales #114 and Avengers #4 and ask yourself if the real 1st appearance of the real character or the impostor appearance is more valuable ...and if the first REAL appearance is more valuable with Captain America, why not his nemesis the Red Skull? Also, can you think of any other Marvel characters where there is a discrepancy between the 1st appearance of the actual hero/villian vs. an imposter?

When will/will the WALKING DEAD bubble burst?
StuporMan replied to The-Collector's topic in Comics General
Honestly, I think collectors of other ages 'couldn't give a rats-behind' what modern comics go for. Most probably at those prices paid for modern books, if they pay attention at all. Not me, though - I think it's great for the hobby. It gets people digging through the back issue bins at their LCS (thumbs u Actually, wouldn't all this prove that older comic characters have more longevity and therefore have more support for back issues? Besides, people buying older comics aren't always buying them to read them. There's nostalgia, investment, speculation, set building, etc. On another note, zombies aren't exactly a new concept - in film, TV or comics. I haven't seen TWD do anything that hasn't been done in another zombie movie. You completely lost me here.
