In less than 8 years both Supes & Bats will be public domain
tth2 replied to Chicago Boy's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
The company won't be stripped of these characters. They can continue to produce Superman & Batman comics just like they've always done. And they will also have a huge advantage over others using those characters because DC has superior distribution channels and commands more and better shelf space. Just because someone writes their own Batman comic doesn't mean that they'll be able to get comic stores to carry their comic, or imagine trying to sell it directly online and get a Google search result for your Batman comic to appear ahead of all of the search results relating to the DC Batman. Similarly, just because somebody wants to make a Batman movie doesn't mean that they'll be able to get a studio to do it or to distribute it. -

Which would explain Vinnie's casual handling of the book. I mean, if it's already restored and gets a little more damage, what's a little more restoration between friends? -

I'm always confused in these kinds of situations as to which is the correct answer. If I say I'm sure it's a restored copy, does that mean I'm taking the "over" or the "under"? -

Privately owned corporations didn't exist in Shakespeare's day. The assumption was that IP rights belonged to individuals, who would eventually die, and that created a natural expiration of IP protection. Corporations, which can in theory live forever, have distorted the original intention of IP protection. If corporations should be able to hold on to copyrights forever, then why shouldn't they also be allowed to hold on to patents forever? I'm not aware that Disney has suffered any great harm (or harm at all) as a result of losing its copyright protection over the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse. -

the way Vinnie went at the packaging, I was convinced it was the reprint copy If you little people had handled as many copies of Action 1 as Vinnie has, you'd be casual about it too! -

No wonder I never noticed it. -
Just use multiple standard boards to achieve the desired firmness.

Ah, of course, the Church Captain America #1. I knew there was a major Church Timely hero book I was overlooking. -

What's the contest? 100 meter sprint? 100 meter butterfly? Marathon? Discus? Arm wrestling? Free throw shooting?

Based on your scans, I don't think it needs to be conserved at all. In fact, unless there are more significant issues that are not revealed in your scan, disclosed conservation could actually harm the potential resale price. Residue and white out don't bother most OA collectors unless it's really distracting, which it's definitely not in your piece. They're part of the charm of vintage OA since they were produced for commercial purposes. If you're planning on selling it anyways, I definitely wouldn't bother.

Very cool piece! Burma is a particular favorite of mine. I can't answer your first question, but as to your second question, I can't imagine selling Caniff OA anywhere other than Heritage. Every Caniff piece of note that has come to market, including the very first Terry & the Pirates strip and various WW 2 miscellanea created by him, has been sold on Heritage.

As mentioned a few posts above yours, it was finally purchased by a real buyer (a Boardie actually). -
Don't tell the comic book submittors, as they're liable to go ballistic if they hear this! Seriously though, that's great and congratulations. CGC are clearly prioritizing this new line of business and putting resources behind it to make it successful. As they say, you only get one chance to make a good first impression.

Not really strange, but adam strange.
-
So even though people were a bit surprised by this recent price, you're saying that the consignor may have actually taken a hair cut, particularly after Heritage's fees? Wow.
-
Which was surprising because they've been kind of dead for a while.

If I could have swung it back then I would have but sadly economics were quite a bit different. There were so many books I was after back then, and every time the Church National 7 came up, it became cheaper(!), so there was no urgency and I prioritized other books because I figured "I'll always get another chance if I don't win it this time". Stupid! -

It's all relative. Obviously it's not common compared to Hulk 181. But for a GA mega-key, that's pretty "common"! -

What blows me away on many of Peter's books, including the non-Churches, is how vivid the colors still are. -

Love this cover, and you got it at a nice discount from Mr. Keller, if I recall correctly! -
