  1. I want to try Green Lantern so do you guys have any suggestions on good series that I can start collecting in the green lantern sphere of books that is a good read that will not cost me a fortune to start collecting?
  2. Backstory matters little as long as I do not come in the story in the middle of an arc.
  3. I am sorry! I did not ever get any popups when I clicked the link but then again I have a lot of adware protection on my pc. It usually comes up and tells me if it had to block anything though and it didn't for that site. Sorry
  4. Would love to find a used one. Actually what I started looking for but can not find one where I live.
  5. I am sorry. I just tried the link and it loaded the page for me so I do not know.
  6. My books are not in mylites yet. I am in the process of buying and rebagging and boarding my collection now that I have a little extra money to do so but it will take time. I am just looking at good long term storage options for my collection. I personally have not had good luck with standard long boxes. I got most of them from a few lgs back in the day and they just do not seem to hold up well. Also, I am looking for an option that makes the collection easily accessible. I am in a wheelchair and to have to deal with constantly lifting heavy boxes to get to my collection that is not ideal for me and is the same problem I have now. Not to mention, and I do not know why, the boxes I bought from my lcs just did not seem to hold up well. I did not get them damp, overfill them or anything like that but for some reason they did not hols up. I had to replace about half of them when I moved because they just did not hold up so I started looking for a better option. I am still thinking about getting filing cabinets but used ones are hard to find within 50 miles ish of where I live and the logistics of shipping even a new one along with having it brought into the house would in most cases cost me more then the cabinet itself so I was toying with cheaper options that I did not even have to buy all at once that I could add to overtime as I expand my collection. Any advice you could give would be great.
  7. For something like a comic book shop that is consistently open every day those numbers would be harder to iron out, but most of those comic books shops diversify into other areas such as action figures, CCG's, video games, music, and table top rpg games like dungeons and dragons to help keep the lights on. I got out of collecting for a long time, but I did a lot of research when I was collecting and I do know that most coming book shop owners are not going to pay anywhere near what a collections actual value is because they would not make any money and would go out of business pretty quickly. In most cases people walk in the door with some old comics they had as a kid, or comics their dad or grandfather gave them with no real idea of what they have. Most shop owners are not going to take the time to offer anything for a bunch of comics that they throw into their dollar bin. They are going to try to find the few gems that are in the box, pay next to nothing for the "trash" comics and try to pick up the comics that are worth something by naming a flat rate price that is considerably lower then the comics value. That way they have less of a risk of taking any kind of lose on their investment. Most shops are not going to offer real money for issues unless they either know the person or something great walks in their door that they know they can flip and they do not wanted leaving their shop. Most of the experiences I was referring to have to do with people setting up in places like flea markets where what they pay for X space is a known fact if you know where to look, they have no employees other then themselves or maybe one other person and their time. Besides that their only real expense is their inventory and their time. While the worth of someone's time is subjective, when you are trying to charge 3 times what a book list for to someone. that does not know much about the worth of X book and then you have a good idea that the vendor most likely paid less then half of that list price then that is an insane amount of profit on investment for that item. also, from a business prospective if you are selling items at 3x plus what you paid for them and still have a hard time at the end of the day staying in business then you have either overpriced your product, the demand for your product is not there and you need to diversify to handle a changing market, or there is gross mismanagement of funds in other areas and something needs to change. Like I said before, I have zero problem with anyone making money for their time. I support local business, but to me there is a difference between making a profit to keep your doors open and turning around and buying something for 10% of it's actual value and selling it for three times it's actual value to someone that does not know any better just to make a quick buck and wait for the next sucker to walk in the door. Some might look at me and say that is the customers fault for not doing their research and that they deserve what they get for being ignorant of the hobby, but I have always fallen into the camp to think that behavior like that from a seller does a disservice to the hobby because eventually that person is going to learn that you took advantage of them to make some quick cash at their expense. When that happens do you think that person is going to shrug their shoulders and say "You got me." And go on about his day while continuing to be a customer? No, odds are that person will be distrustful of anything you tell them and if they do not leave the hobby altogether odds are good they will never step foot in that shop again. I have seen it happen. With the owner bragging about how he got another one as the guy was walking out the door. You would be shocked what people will say in front of you when you have a disability and people (the shop owner) assumes that you are stupid as well. I have no problem with people earning a living but you should not have to do it at other people's expense just to make some fast cash because a lot of the time the fast cash goes away and you are left with nothing. Most big businesses operate on about an 11% profit margin against expenses for the year. If you do better then that you are above the curve. As a small business you would have to do slightly higher then that to get a decent return on investment versus what a big company does simply because of the difference in volume of sales and inventory, but with that said if you are buying something at a good deal less then it's actual market value you should not have to sell it for 4 or 5 times that just to make decent money. Believe me, I am not saying this to start anything. I really love the boards and all the people here, but I do have a degree in accounting and at the end of the day I just do not like to see anyone taken advantage of like that because of their lack of knowledge and someone else's greed. I do not think anyone here would use those predatory business practices and would give people here a fair shake. I am not stupid, I know there are people like that in this world (I have met several sadly) but I just want to live my life where I have no problem looking at my reflection in a mirror in the morning and I would hope others would want the same.
  8. Has anyone tried these for comic book storage? https://www.wayfair.com/home/pdp/storex-plastic-archive-storage-box-letterlegal-usm1218.html?piid= I have been trying to find solutions for storing my collection and have kind of put collecting on hold all but a few comics here and there. I live in the country so it is hard to find used filing cabinets and the logistics and expense of buying a new one is a little overwhelming so I have been looking at different storage options for my comics. So, has anyone used this for comic storage? What are the pros and cons of this storage solution.
  9. I understand that this is CGC boards, but I also know there are all kinds of collectors here, so do you guys know any good X-Men series I can get into reading without breaking the bank? Looking for something with a good story that I can get several issues of without having to morgage my house lol. Thanks guys.
  10. Funny, considering because of my disability I usually am the guy that has to walk (roll away) or argue to get something at a decent price. They see the disability and the wheelchair and they think that they found an easy mark. Understand I have no problem with people making money for their time but not at a 200 to 300% profit margin. If you can keep someone else from being taken advantage of then good for you man. I commend you.
  11. I guess I should have been more specific. First, a chunk of my collection is from the 80's and 90's. I know from a price standpoint those books are just about worthless but they are worth something to me. The time I spent collecting with my father, and some of the stories I read make the collection valuable to me from a personal standpoint. I guess in a way I answered my own question, however, I would also like to get back into collecting from a more serious standpoint. My income is limited because I was born with a disability that does not allow me to get out as much as most but as a kid this hobby was one of the reasons I did not go crazy (my childhood consisted mainly of me being at home or school) I got out of. collecting because of a tramatic event that took place right after I graduated and have not had the money to collect for several years. Not to mention I got engaged to a girl that thought comic books were a little kid hobby and a total waste of money. She tried to get me to sell off my whole collection a few years ago but the guy saw my disability and thought he could get them for nothing and I refused to give away a huge chunk of my collection for a few dollars store credit in his very overpriced shop. (He had issues in his shop that were likely mid grade keys. I would say 5.5 or 6 from what I looked at for prices higher then people were selling 9.6 graded keys on eBay at the time.) It was a joke. I never went back to his store again. Anyway, to make a long story shorter the woman I was engaged too left me to be with someone else and I moved back to my home state. For the first time in years I am not literally spending every dime I am making on bills and would Like to start collecting again because as I started going through my collection after moving I remembered how much I missed it. I guess it is just after being a casual collector for years and being out of the game so long I feel like there is so much I need to do and I am kind of lost as to what to do first in terms of storage and rebagging and boarding my books and coming up with some way to organize and keep up with my collection. After that I can look into getting some of the xheaper keys that I have really wanted to add to my collection. Thanks for the replies so far sorry if I was a little vague
  12. Okay guys for those that do not know me getting back into comics after being out of the hobby for over 20 years. Still have all of my existing collection. Did not realize it was quite so large. (Still counting but at this point looking at over 1,000 books) not sure of value on hardly any of them but I am wondering if I should replace all of my bags and boards with mylar. But we are talking a pretty big upfront cost. I am just kind of overwhelmed at the moment over the amount of bags and boards I am going to have to buy. Besides selling a good portion of my collection do you guys have any tips on how you deal with these kinds of issues?
  13. Hey guys just wondering what you usually set aside in your monthly budget for comics? How much do you spend on back issues vs new comics? Do you buy them through ebay? Do you get subscriptions or buy from a shop? I am trying to get back into collecting but i feel so lost about storage solutions and what i really want to collect I am just feeling a little overwhelmed but in a good way. I would be thankful for any advice.
  14. I just had someone that knows what they are doing measure the inside of both of my filing cabinets. The first one is 12 1/2 wide and the second is 12 inches wide so sadly I am going to be missing about an inch to put to rows side by side in the thing. I have seen some people that have placed them the other way in the filing cabinet with several small rows across the width of the cabinet. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Will I lose any space by doing it this way? what will I have to do to prepare the cabinet if I went with this option?
  15. Okay, sorry for replying to a post that has not seen much traffic in the last little bit but I was wondering if Collectorz.com is a really good service. Originally I was looking at Comicbase but if I go that route I am looking at an up front cost of about $300 (unless, they offer discounts for purchasing the barcode scanner and the software together, which I am not sure I would even be able to do.) This seems like a cheaper option especially if I can get a barcode reader really cheap (although, I will be honest, I am not sure what types of barcodes I would even need to be reading for comics. I want to be able to put them in fairly quickly because I think I have upwards of 1,000 comics or more that I have not touched in a bit that are going to have to be organized. Would collectorz.com even be a good option for me if I want to put my collection in quickly or would I be better of spending the money on something like Comicbase? I will admit the idea of buying the mobile version to put on my phone as well to have at my fingertips if I am out somewhere is really appealing.
