$20,000 AF15 Comic Book STOLEN at MegaCon 2023!
gcstomp replied to SpineTic's topic in Comics General
Thoth, that is your take? Calling someone 70 something a hard working old man is "equally ugly" as the disparaging comments that have been lobbed at Greg? No chance Greg would feel that way, and yes, I have known him for decades as has most anyone else who has set up in southern state shows. This is not a serious take, this is a grasping lemme get a shot in, a whatabout ism. -

The ugly characterizations of people who insist on piling on to a 70 year old who soloed megacon as a dealer, and suffered a loss, displays the worst of people, and of a mindset. Where are you in your path to think it is wise to kick a hard working old man who is down. As seen on vid greg has mature attitude of, I woke up today, and the sun was shining, so l am a little down but not out. I am not in a place in my head where i could take a hit like that so graciously. -

In the vid, Greg admits he was not vigilant enough and repeatedly blames himself for allowing the theft. He is around 70 years old, and treats the comics in a certain casual way I have noticed with some older comic guys that have seen and sold everything, under the sun. Maybe not fair to call it a fogginess, but Greg has the relaxed demeanor of someone who is older and has done things in same This show, a record attendance Megacon, where Saturday was so crowded you could not see past 1 booth to your left or right. It is crazy pants for him not to have a more secure set up and hire another pair of eyes to help him. But I get how it happened, it always worked for him before, without incident. -

That is greg white. And he has been a comic dealer for half a century, using that same booth configuration and old school wood racks. He has done literally hundreds, maybe thousands, of shows, dealing in every big silver age key that there is. He recently started dealing in graded books, but for most part just deals in raws. Note, the rack configuration he uses, he has 1 shelf of graded books, all the rest are raw, and that is the only 1 shelf on the entire rack that could fit a graded book height wise. -

Family was told not to enter certain rooms, not at all allowing family to participate in his life passion during life. Friends were not allowed over, no one was even allowed to mention the comics to others, and the family themselves were not even allowed to see any part of collection that took up every dollar and minute of the mans spare time. This is all from the video snipet, the full length doc will clarify further. I cant wrap my head around the multiple 40' shipping containers he had built under/around house to hold collection, and the multiples of every key in high grades. But for what purpose, to die, while having pushed your family away, and now family get heckled for how they disburse this lifes obsession, that for decades had maybe created a hostile family dynamic? A lawyers with aspergers contributing to compulsive accumulation, resulting in maybe the biggest find in decades. I would guess family is even underselling the value of this hoard.

Question about moving huge lot of modern books
gcstomp replied to UncleAnwar's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
Moving 10 long boxes of moderns, without any keys is the easiest thing in the world. Are there any $50+ books to pull, and send to mycomicshop for consignment? Answer, no. So 2nd step is to take a handful of pics, list on the big free sites for local sale. Offerup, and craigslist. Gently explain modern bulk sells for a box price to the friend. Have them pull a few books they may want to keep for themselves, if any. And list the 10 boxes for $500, assuming it has a lot of marveland dc. If it is mostly indie, mayble lower lot price. Books will be sold before dinner time. -
Nostradamus is not my street name, I cannot see into the great beyond. Yet I can be reasonably sure the owner will not want to spend 25k. What level collection would it be worth such a spend? Not a $25k collection, 100%, lol. $250k collection, that would be a 10% spend, no that is way too high. Forget wow, cataloging will be a great chore and so i would not want to do that work for less.... Unless it is a $500k plus collection, it would just not ne justified unless someone had some court ordered reason to have a cataloged value by a certain date.

The big annual art fair here in south florida had a bit of a mind bender this past year with a piece that was sold. It was a banana taped to a wall with a piece of string dangling. I believe it sold for 50k. To me, it was not art, and had no value. Nfts have value to many people. I know it is a growing thing. But to me it is scary silly, as in evidence of how some people have more money than they know what to do with, or worse, i am too old to wrap my head around this art.
