I like to compare these modern comic CGC 9.8 pump-and-dump schemes to how TCG corporations do business in this day and age. Artificial scarcity. Essentially, legally printing money.

Insiders of publishers or their direct retailers/wholesalers get first claim to their freshly minted books, which are guaranteed to be NM/M. Some factors then easily pump up their value, such as artwork or rarity. To avoid depreciation over time due to busted speculation, these first owners quickly flip them at high prices to whales willing to pay money for them.

The same issue has plagued TCGs forever (Pokemon, Magic the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!). Rarity, strength or usefulness of card, etc. We've moved on from the days of collecting holo first edition Charizards to collecting cute anime girl holofoils that only appear in 1 of every 1,00 packs at $500+ a pop.

It really depends what someone means by "Moderns". The way that I am reading these comments is ALL Moderns. There are these sub-levels, I will say, that pre-sell 9.8 base covers and base variants that usually are cheaper than buy-in 6 months later. Also, the endless ratio, store, and convention variants that never amount to any value but people scoop them up. But, there are plenty of Moderns that do have value.

Dealer incentives? Check. Convention exclusives? Check. Pre-graded 9.9s? Check. Special acetate overlays? Check. Adding 'Newsstand' to CGC labels? Check. Influencers "Buying" multiple copies and hyping on social media? Check.

    Hard to deny LGB's point.

Good thing only Modern's have jumped in price due to social media hype.

Love buying pre-code at these low prices.

If you didn't agree with the price of the book 3 years ago your response to someone suggesting it was time to sell wouldn't have been to deny the existence of the bubble.

    And the price keeps falling:

So because prices go up and down on a regular basis, that means the bubble for the hobby has burst? Collectibles do not have a flat price over years of time.

What kind of logic is that?

You keep moving the goal post as your comments are dis-proven.

Your initial post in this thread in November 2020 shows no argument against the value at the time, which was around 1.5k, triple the price of what it was selling for at the start of 2020. You defended the character because he was in Ultimates 3. So three years ago you weren't opposed to the price, it continued to increase during the pandemic, but then the bubble popped, but there was no bubble according to you, or it was a different bubble because of the pandemic, the book continues to crater and you don't think it should be 1k, but again there was no bubble, so what exactly are you saying?

The book was tremendously overvalued at the end of 2020, the original poster had a two plus year window to sell it for a profit, you gave bad advice, and the book continues to be one to avoid at current market price.

I never commented on the price of the book until last week.

I'm not looking to be contrary here, but this seems like a rather "after the fact" reason for a book to be worth $1000.

I can't imagine that the reason the Blue Marvel book is valued so highly is that he appeared in Ultimates Vol. 3 alongside two minor characters that have already appeared in the MCU. Doesn't that also describe every other character who appears in Ultimates Vol. 3?

Booster Gold and Blue Beetle are both going to be in the James Gunn DCU, and they often cross over with Fire and Ice, who first appeared in the uncollected/low print run Super Friends, but that book hasn't spiked.

The book is definitely valuable, so it has something going for it, but I've yet to hear any convincing reason as to why.

Marvel spec > DC spec for the past 10 years.

Again, I’m not saying the book should be $1,000, I’m explaining why some value it for more than cover price.

Where did I say that?  I was interested of seeing the video where the creator of the character was saying he is buying all the copies online and I stumbled to watching that speculator video also. I was not looking for some information I could care less how Blue Marvel is selling.

But you do care as that was why you first commented. :insane:

Blue Marvel may not be *unknown,* but he's certainly not *well known.*

Yeah I've never heard of this guy.

If you're interested in how the comics may tie to the movies (and speculation), The Ultimates (Vol. 3) and Ultimates II somewhat relate in terms of characters. Blue Marvel is a central character and it also integrates America and Ayo (1st app) who have already appeared in the MCU. Thus why the book is speculated on and relative pricing. It's also a good story.

I don't understand how did you come to that conclusion but what I was saying that the first youtube video that I saw was some card guy who seemed kinda unfamiliar with comics but was pushing this book two years ago. Like UXM 130 I have always kinda thought that it was undervalued (I hate that word) like NM copy should be like 100$. It is a 1st appearance of a well know X-men character, lot of 2nd appearances, part of Dark Phoenix Saga etc. well now the book is rising a little because maybe Taylor Swift will make short cameo as Dazzler in Deadpool 3. The speculators are maybe thinking that there will be a CGC signing and after that they will have a great collectible that Taylor Swift fans will pay huge amounts..

Adam Blue Marvel is unknown character, will not appear on future movies/disney+ , no NBA, NFL star is going trick or treating in Adam Blue Marvel costume.. so if Adam Marvel was a great character in some short storyline years ago it does not make his first appearance valuable.

Because you said you were looking on youtube for information?
Who thinks that Taylor Swift needs to do a CGC signing? xD
Blue Marvel is not unknown. And thus why I made the comment that you don't know anything about him.

Well that is my opinion about the book. I also see it as a complete hype thing. Like when I searched for the creator youtube video there was also a video about some speculator who started his video saying wow what a great spec this is.. just learned about this character year ago.. yeah this will be worth so much more in the future etc.

So you don't know anything about the character then? Not that I'm saying he's worth the current price, but at least I have some knowledge of his integration into the Marvel universe and not a random youtube video. We are in an era where social media is used more and more to discuss comics, speculation, etc... That's something we all have to accept.

When you wrote this in response to another user stating the modern market was in a bubble:

"How long have people been saying that?"

And then the bubble burst...and the book continues to fall in price...

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/266461731083

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/335082197715

And thanks to your graphic we can visually see that when the statement was made it was at the beginning of the pandemic market. Then the pandemic pricing ended. And now it is back to that previous market pricing (where the bubble supposedly was).

The pandemic market is completely different than the market that everyone has been saying was going to crash for the past 10 years. Because, well nobody knew about a pandemic market then.

Sad :| You can buy a issue 1 cgc 9.8 from ebay 750-800$. I would say the real price for the book should be like 200-300$ 9.8 and a high grade raw maybe 40$. Modern book with character that makes pre Disney+ Moon Knight look like a household name.

I wish that's how market pricing worked. There are 20 sales this year ranging from $750-$1,200.

Right, which means the topic creator should have sold the book sometime in the past three years, you know when we were in the bubble that you suggested wasn't real.

I never understood why this book sold for what it did and was watching a video on Youtube yesterday where the creator talked about buying up all the available copies whenever he could because the original ones he owned were lost in a flood. Then I came here and did a search for the book and this topic popped up and I thought it perfectly dovetailed with where we currently are.

    When did I say that?

Again there is nothing to support the value of the book other than rampart speculation yet. There are plenty of
books that are just as scarce with 1st appearances that pull anywhere near that value. I think its the greatest con
book in the modern market. My local shops have all 4 copies slabbed on want $1.9k for them. They been sitting for
    2 years now.

That's been how the Modern market has worked for 10+ years?

For me having a snug fit is very important.  I had always bought Hot Flips resealable bags because they fit the books nicely, but more recently they changed to a slightly larger format and the books swim a bit in the looser bags.

Has anyone tried these bags from Superior Fit?  I was thinking of trying them out.

Nice, didn't realize they made them for comics.

Their ones for sportscards are really nice. Very tight fit.
