My issue is the guy that outbid me for the #1 told Doug he had to sell his 9.8 prior to payment. My bid would have been a winner and now Doug is trying to have me buy the 9.8 at $215k so the guy pays for the auction. That’s not how this works.

I'm not sure I understand, you were both bidding on a #1 1st print 9.8 and the other bidder had to sell his copy he already had at the same price?

Do you happen to have the CGC# for the one that actually sold?

Unless they broke the book out of the case and resubmitted it, it's not the same book.

    9/1/21 Serial: 3866366001

    11/22/21 auction Serial: 3888170001

you're correct, my mistake. had the wrong photo up on my screen. thanks for picking that up!

It looks to be a newer serial # that I don't have any data on it in my database going back to 2005.

9.8 white pages on comic connect - auction starts 11/22/21

I think after both a 240 and a 245k, the floor is around 150... I'm hoping still for 200+ here... and I think it will get that.  There's such a premium on 9.8s.  We'll see

That's a great point and one I've observed with this book and many others over this market boom. The 9.8's relationship to price has shot up multiples while all the lower grades have shot up as well, but not by as much.

This 11/22/21 auction is of the same book that just "sold" for $245K  on 9/1/21. So the sale likely fell through and the original owner is auctioning it this time.

  4. A couple updates to notable #1's up for sale:

A new 9.8 1st print (graded 2 days ago) just went up on ebay for one easy payment of $150,000! This copy has OW/W pages, just like the same seller's 9.6 with OW/W pages that was up for sale and since removed not long ago. Too quick for a press & relisting? I don't know. The seller is very secretive and as others had pointed out, used another photo of a 9.8 in a previous listing on ebay that "sold" for ~75K a while back.

The 9.6 on Heritage is at $42K:

The 9.6 on CC is at $22.7K:

Like most of us I think its best to buy what you like and enjoy more than "speculation" aspect. Having said that, what do you guys/gals think is best to buy - a 9.6 1st print #2 or a 9.4, 9.6 3rd print #1? I remember not long ago when 3rd printings were considered near worthless and something to avoid but its a different time now I suppose.

And while I'm asking questions here's another. I think its safe to assume 1st and 2nd printing 9.8 #1's aren't coming down any time soon or probably ever, but what about 3rd printing 9.8's? The few that sold in 2020 went for around 1,500. The last one to sell in an auction sold for 3,360 in December. Since then there have been four e bay buy it nows of  - 4750, 4450, 3700, 4600. Do you think it will stay around that price, go up ,or sink like a stone?

If I didn't have any TMNT books of the original magazine size I would get the #1 3rd print highest grade I could afford (of those choices). For investment purposes I would get the #2 1st print as it had a lower print run, 15,000 versus the #1 3rd print which had 35,000.

Now if you're talking 9.8 3rd prints, they will have the most room to fall if they do because of the print runs. When there is a correction, and there will be, they will come down the most. The ebay BIN prices are usually wishful thinking but I bet one of those sellers would entertain a lower offer.

Hi icculus, I don't think that shows whether it was legit or not. Or more precisely if the 90k sale actually went through. I believe he said he sold the same 9.8 for 17K some years earlier.

I would believe it did, but the fact that is was sold again within a year for what actually amounts to about a 60,000 dollar loss makes me really question it. Why would anyone do that unless they needed bail money or something?

The 9.8 90K sale is legit. I talked to Ed Jaster, the head of Heritage collectibles about it. He said the person who bought it resold it for the 59K on comic connect (where it was purchased by the Rallyrd group).

I dunno, this seems like bait to get you in the store. What do you guys think these should really go for? $120k? more? less?

I think you're on the mark there, maybe higher, judging from what recent 9.4's have gone for. We'll get an idea with the two 9.6's at auction over the next month. Generally, double the next lowest grade has been about right with the high grade 1st prints. The last two 9.4's went for ~36K and ~39K so that would put the 9.6's around 70-80K, and 1st prints I'd guess sell at auction (HA, CL & CC) in the $140-150 area. Don't hate (this means you Lou) it's just a formula and my opinion.
