From my experience, Heritage has never been a good place to sell TMNT. Not sure why, but their outcomes always seem low.

My view on it was the opposite, Heritage seemed to get a premium on the real top-tier books. My opinion changed when I sold my 9.6 there and it sold for $22K less than a book that hammered 2 weeks later at Comic Connect!

In looking back at 9.8's only, the price fluctuates at both sites. I can't see a clear advantage.

So what’s the deal with Heritage?  I feel like their TMNT auctions have been going low and screwing up the FMV.  A 9.0 just sold on ComicConnect for $20k.  A 9.2 signature series finished at $16,800 on Heritage today and that includes the 20% premium.  What do you all think?

    IMG_9953.jpeg

The last sale I have was 3/20/24 at Comic Connect for $120,000 which would mean this most recent 4/4/24 sale of the 9.8 for $126K was a 5% increase.

For the 9.4, the last sale I have was on 11/19/23 at Heritage also for $22.2K (OW/W pages), which translates to a 8% bump from the most recent sale of $24K above. Although you could argue W pages is probably worth the difference.

For the 9.6, my most recent sale was also 11/19/23 (also Heritage) for $38.4K, which would translate to a decline in our most recent sale of $37.2 of 3.1%.

Prices seem to be stabilizing with these small movements percentage-wise.

  3. A couple more high-grade TMNT #1 sales ended yesterday at CC. Most notable was this $120K sale of a 9.8 SS with Kevin Eastman's signature from 2022 No buyer's premium was noted, so this is a 12K or 9% drop from the previous blue label sale on 1/11/24. There are very few yellow label 9.8's so I compare to the last blue label. This copy is new to my database so it was likely sitting in someone's collection for a while looking nice and new. I have to be honest, I wouldn't have gotten his signature on such a pristine book! It was either daring by the owner or could have been a 5-digit loss had KE accidentally done anything to the book!

    https://www.comicconnect.com/item/1036280#description

This 9.0 sold for $20,367 (including 15% buyer's premium), which is a $2K or 11% increase from the previous sale last year of another blue label on 4/1/23 for $18K.

  4. A new listing on Comic Link for a 9.8, this one SN 0950071001 listed for sale for $159,900. This copy has a LOT of sales history. It last sold by my records back in 2018 for $38K on Heritage. Previous to that it sold on 4/1/16 for $27K on Comic Connect (with a possible quick re-sale on ebay for $24k although that one is sketchy because of the seller's "nick_bridger" history with bogus sales). There were more previous sales, but just know that this copy has been the hot-potato of 9.8's!

Yea that lighting that struck during the pandemic, just like covid, is something we might not ever experience again in our lifetime. If you were looking to maximize profit and did not cash in during this time you might have missed the boat. At least as far as getting those insane prices most collectibles where hitting. Most things have come back down to earth and its probably going to settle there just like before.

Let's revisit this next year or even 2025.

  6. Heritage auction closed at $120K (w buyers premium).

I happened to log in to the live auction feed as it was happening. The last price was at $90K, then it jumped to $100K and then at $110 with no further bids. The total price with buyers premium was listed as this happened at $132K, however in checking the listing afterwards it settled at $120K. Not sure the change. Could have meant the final bidder didn't commit/failed to commit and they took the second-to-last-bid (more likely), or they lowered the buyer's premium (less likely).

Either way, a large step back in value for this book. Seeing as I have one myself I am not happy with the current market of course. A 50%+ pullback in price from the top of $250K on 10/13/2021 is significant.

No, the buyer's premium (total price) was 66K, not higher.

Similar to this one, the total price was $192K. The seller received whatever their arrangement with Heritage was minus the fee. In my case it was the 17%.

To be transparent, there is/was the possibility of listing another high-end book that went along with this. Which likely provided more flexibility to me, fee-wise. I was miffed however, because another 9.6 sold on Comic Connect almost right after for somewhere in the 70-80K range (I'm traveling and don't have access to my DB).

Just checking... if it hammered at $66K, then the buyer paid $79.2K to Heritage (with Buyer's Premium) and Heritage sent you $55K, correct?  If so, you got 70% of the buyer's payment and Heritage got 30%.

No, the buyer's premium (total price) was 66K, not higher.

Did you negotiate a deal or have a coupon or something (yes, they're real.  I have several.) When was the auction? The current BP for comics is 20%, of which (unless negotiated otherwise) HA keeps all.  And then there is the fee schedule:

PRICE OF THE BOOK  FEE PERCENTAGE
    less than $5000  10 % ($25 minimum)
    $5000 - $9999  9 %
    $10,000 - $24,999  8 %
    $25,000 - $99,999  7 %
    $100,000 - $499,999  6 %
    $500,000 and up  5 %

A few years ago. Now that I think of it, I did negotiate the fee to be waived due to the price of the book. A nice problem to have.

  10. On 8/14/2023 at 2:04 PM, jaybuck43 said:

Closer to 30%.  10-6% of the hammer price (depending on price), plus the full BP.  So on a 52.8K final, you're looking at 27% of that sale going to Heritage.

That sounds high. I sold a 9.6 through Heritage and it hammered at 66K. My cut was 55K, so 11K in fees or 17% of the full hammer price.

ComicLink does not seem like the best venue for a book of that caliber

I wasn't sure of your comment so I checked my database of TMNT #1 1st prints for sales of 9.8's only. You may be correct, there appears to be a discount to selling on Clink versus Heritage and Comic Connect, at least for the 9.8 grade. Here are a few examples:

    Heritage: 11/21/19 $52.8K

    Clink: 12/5/19 $50K

    CConnect: 4/30/20 $59K

    Clink: 7/7/20 $58K

    Clink: 12/9/21 $198K

    CConnect: 12/14/21 $231K

What's with the large white smudge marks on the back cover photo here?  :p

Looks like somebody placed something on top of the CGC holder and definitely not appealing for a $192K book.  doh!

Exactly. Someone had something either heavy or abrasive on the case. Not smart.

It's a simple but stressful fix. Reholder to CGC but with loads of insurance and painful wait until its back safe.

A couple of #1 9.8's in upcoming auctions:

    ComicLink #1 9.8

    ComicConnect #1 9.8

There are now 42 copies in 9.8 and 70 in 9.6. Do you think the growing population will have a negative or positive impact on the values?

The ComicLink 9.8 last sold on Heritage for $192K just over a year ago on 6/16/2022.

The ComicConnect is a first time on the public market that I can see from my database.

I think the ratio of 9.8 to 9.6 is not a negative for values. The overall # has grown but the numbers are still very small relatively.

  14. A little Heritage re-cap, there were 3 high grade 1st prints that just sold, 9.0, 9.4 and a 9.6 on 3/30/23 and 4/1/23.

The 9.0 sold for $18K. No prior history available for this copy. This is a $500 (3%) drop from the most recent sale of $18.5K on 1/16/23 at Comic Link. The previous sale to that was on 12/13/22 for $23K. So the trend is slowly moving down. https://comics.ha.com/itm/modern-age-1980-present-/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-1-mirage-studios-1984-cgc-vf-nm-90-white-pages/a/7339-94356.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515

The 9.4 sold for $28.8K.  This 9.4 used to be listed on Ebay for ~$50K and was last sold in 2016 for $7,500. This recent sale is a $8,382 (23%) drop from the most recent sale of $37.2K on 6/10/22 at Comic Connect. The previous sale to that was on 4/8/22 for $36K at Heritage. The trend is also down, but steeper than 9.0's. https://comics.ha.com/itm/modern-age-1980-present-/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-1-mirage-studios-1984-cgc-nm-94-white-pages/a/7339-92162.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515

The 9.6 sold for $54K. No prior history available for this copy. This is a $10.8K (25%) increase from the most recent sale of $43.2K on 6/17/22 at Heritage. Previous sale to that was $69K on 4/7/22 also at Heritage. The trend is up but could be more stabilizing since that $69K sale was so high relative to the most recent sales. The $43.2K sale shows the perils of auctions for sellers. https://comics.ha.com/itm/modern-age-1980-present-/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-1-mirage-studios-1984-cgc-nm-96-white-pages/a/7339-91043.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515

Did that $92K sale on 6/8/21 take place on CL because i could not find it in botht he Heritage and CC archives?  ???

Rather interesting that the price for TMNT 1 in CGC 9.8 took such a big jump from $92K in June of 2021 so quicky in less than 3 short months all the way up to $245K in September of 2021.  hm

It was the Rally copy (# 1199928001), the fractional ownership site/app.

I know I'm talking to the wind here, but not everything is a conspiracy. There wasn't much on the market at the time, the previous sale was just under a year previous (7/7/20 for $58K). Then yes the price flew in less than 3 months. So, clearly there were sellers on the sidelines waiting for a good price. Then we saw 9 copies from 9/1/21 to 12/22/22 trade between $156K and $250K.

What about the two signature series that sold nearly at the same time, (on eBay?) For $50,000 a piece? Compared to blue label that was $100k+?

I didn't know if those sales ever went through, but sounded like someone needed the money idk 😐🤣

Ebay sales for $50K you say? Hmmmm...those stick about as often as a brick thrown at a rock wall.  Seriously though, I went through my data and don't have any yellow label sales from ebay for anywhere near that price. It's not to say they don't exist - just that I haven't seen it and have no record.

Does anyone know for sure if unsigned copies of a 9.8 or any grade are more desirable than the signed copies? Unsigned seems to be getting harder to find I'm finding

For the first prints at least, there isn't a discernable difference in pricing, from what I have witnessed (also, many early signatures were on the interior covers of these books). However, one book that sold on Comic Link back in 2021 was a large price dip from the going rate (both before and after). The only difference was that the particular book had blue/red and green signature and sketch all over the cover. I think people are turned off by overt defacing of covers with sigs.

For some of the boardies here who had the illusion that TMNT 1 was going to hit 7-figures one day when CC had those near quarter million dollars sales last year, it's starting to look more like the far fetch dream that it was.  Especially when compared to the current reality where it has a better shot at falling back down under 6-figures if the current downward trend for this year continues, as evident by this result in yesterday's Heritage Auction:  :frown:

Modern Age (1980-Present):Alternative/Underground, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (Mirage Studios, 1984) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages....

Sold for only $156K which is a near $100K drop from last year, but then again for the longer term collectors, still a super strong price when compared to the $35K to $60K price range where it was selling for a short 2 or 3 years ago.  :applause:

This reminds me of the 90K Heritage previous peak sale back in 8/1/2019. That brought out all the naysayers, and for a while they were right.  The subsequent drop in sales prices (52.8K, 50K, 59K, 58K) over the next almost 2 years went on until it was finally topped again on 6/8/21 at 92K.

I think we'll see something similar. A couple years from the peak 250K sale of 10/13/21 to reach that peak again. Then up and up.

  19. On 11/10/2022 at 2:40 PM, GM8 said:

Final sale price: $156K, a 16% haircut from the previous sale of $186K on 9/8/22 and a 37.6% discount from the all-time-high price of $250K set on 10/13/21 on Comic Connect. Is this the new bottom? Time will tell.

A dip in the price for this book, but not to the doomsday levels some predict. Previous sale was $223,222 at Pedigree on 3/9/22, so this $186K sale is a 17% drop from that previous sale. Interestingly, this exact book (SN# 1262933001) last sold by my records way back on 11/20/2014 at Heritage also for a paltry $14,938. Oh to have a time machine!
