If the hobby is dependent on people buying and shortly after that flipping for more, I don't think that necessarily makes for long term health.
Everything is an auction now... auctions are never a barometer of true value, especially now that unseasoned buyers have entered the hobby. ( when I bid I'm always struck with the feeling that its just one other person bidding against me.. arggg...and in truth there are not too many high dollar collectors out there)... Also, the quest for the highest graded copy at a premium can be a detriment to the hobby as CGC is still relatively young. We all know there are many great collections out there that have not been graded. As a "collector" I would rather have a nice solid high grade book that I can enjoy, but at the same time I am willing to pay a premium as a "collector" if its something that supports my collection as a whole. The best collections formed in any genre are made by people who are passionate about that genre and do not see it as an investment.

Any idea if this was a long time comic book collector or a drive by newbie speculator to the comic book collectibles market who thought they could make a quick killing and fast getaway, only to get themself financially killed in the process?
Speculation is speculation... collecting is collecting..

There's not a lot that can be gleaned from this result beyond speculation on which variables might've affected the sale. Some may point to the label making a difference, others would point to the apparent condition of each copy (the 4.0 looking sharper than grade while the 5.5 looks more ragged and too much off the right edge). Also, the bidder dynamics might've changed over two days with additional collectors getting onboard for the latter auction ...perhaps looking for bargains... who weren't involved on the 16th (note: This point would've been moot if the books had been auctioned back to back).
Is it about the CGC grade, how each book presents, the label, timing or something in the notes about each book's history? ...Inquiring minds want to know!
Well... these are auctions. Sometimes they are not manipulated.
