You guys need to go to a coin show, and see the age of the people at the shows and the prices they are paying. You will stop worrying. Just like them, most of us here will collect until the day we die, propping prices up. When your kids are middle-aged, maybe they’ll start to see prices dropping.
Hmmm...the only thing I will say about this, is that gold/silver/copper and other precious metals have been sought and sourced for centuries, based on usage. Funny books about 100 years. We can melt certain metals and make some serious weapons, bullets, make tools, fill teeth, who knows what, when the big one drops. As for Action #1 during the Apocalypse......it can start a fire for your next meal.

do you suppose rich Russians might try to stash money in comic books?

My opinion, is that CGC is getting inundated with crapola, that shouldn't warrant a grade and entombing in the first place. They simply can not supply the man power or quality control to grade this variant or that mid-grade non-key silver age book, that shouldn't be sent off in any sane universe. Save your money, hassle and time, and go get a 2 mil mylar and acid free backing board and be happy.

I suggest you work in a print shop for a few years. (I did). It's not a variant.

Decided to get a couple of my childhood memories in order. I had a few of these when they came out in 1975-1976. Happy to see some on ebay, so I pulled the trigger, as well as finding a loose one at a Flea Market. Had to pick up the retro sign to compliment the pieces. I will probably pull the completely damaged card ones out and put into a small display case, maybe get the full carded one graded.
(P.S. the click click never sounded like gun fire to me).

His 'style' definitely changed over the years, and not for the better. I hate his rigatoni looking hair thing that he draws.

Mid 1980's Silver/Bronze X-men had a special box in the back room at one of my local antique/comic places. Don't know why the owner felt like they didn't belong out with the other back issues. He also had a FN X-Men #1 he hid that he said he would sell for $500. That was 1990, and I was a broke college kid.
GI Joe was doing well, then some kid in High School was talking about this new book called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Then McFarlane came along.

Edgar Church had this method where he stacked them in a closet, with no bags or boards. They kept pretty nice.

FWIW, I've observed several board members starting threads here to pump prices up on certain books that they then turn out to have troves of. I'm not saying that the first appearance of the Black Cat isn't a key. But to think that it has a sustainable price at $5k is pretty crazy to me given the other books that one could find for the same price that are actually scarce and keys.
This book is incredibly common. The idea that it's worth an incredible amount in 9.8 (and only 9.8 as it's an unadulterated price drop as you go down in grade) because "there are only 416 copies in 9.8" is the best indication of irrational speculation I can think of. If I had one, I'd be selling that puppy as fast as possible and spending it on something that is actually scarce. Ask yourself this- would you rather have a 9.8 of ASM 194 or a mid-grade copy of ASM 14? And ASM 14 isn't scarce but there are half as many certified copies as ASM 194 and only one is a 9.8.
The time to buy this book was 20 years ago. There have always been people pumping up books for their own financial gain at the expense of collectors and their enthusiasm. Don't be either one of those guys.
Totally agree. It's the Black Cat:

To your point, the manga section at Barnes and Noble is huge compared to the graphic novels section.
