From Vincent, " [They were] sent to my office last Tuesday. Fed Ex has thus far been unable to track it down. My concern is that a Fed Ex employee walked off with it. Please let us know if you are offered these books and please spread the news as much as you possibly can. Thank you in advance for anything you can do to help with this."

    Event Auction Highlight:
    Daredevil: The Collection Without Fear

    DD1
Daredevil is one of the great continued success stories of Marvel’s stable as the character has undergone several transformations over the decades. From his earliest iteration as a yellow-and-black suited Silver Age crimefighter, to his hard-boiled and groundbreaking tenure in the 1980s that made illustrator Frank Miller into a household name. In the modern day, Daredevil has enjoyed yet another rebirth due to the staggering popularity of his recently canceled Netflix show, with rumors swirling about a rebooted TV series or an upgrade to the MCU, Daredevil is the hero that keeps on reinventing himself. From the highly collectible key first issue, featuring a Spider-Man cover appearance illustrated by Jack Kirby right up to the last pre-Miller issue, this is a fantastic collection of Man Without Fear comics for those Devil of Hell’s Kitchen fans out there.

From the consignor: “When I was a kid Daredevil was one of the comics that turned me into a lifelong fan. I loved everything about it. I still do.”

“A few years later I was working at a comic shop as a teenager and started collecting seriously, Daredevil was naturally one of the titles I started buying and over the years I put together a couple of mid-grade runs, I just loved the character.”

“Starting in 2010 I decided to do the run right once and for all. My original goal was to get #1-157 in 9.4 or better with an additional focus on pedigree books. I wanted the best possible preservation, page quality, and structure for each book, no matter what the grade. Even with a couple of 9.2s in there, the run is better than I hoped it would be. One-third of the books are from pedigree collections and the ones that aren’t look like they could be.”

Event Auction XXXVIII Highlight: Color Guides

Jim Steranko and John Byrne are revered talents in the comic book industry whose contributions to the history of the art form are well documented. The artists defined the look and style of their eras that not only left a lasting impression on their fans but, so too, on pop culture as a whole. These color guides from some of their most important works are a fascinating look inside the creative process these legends employed while crafting their comic masterpieces.

    ColorGuideX-men142.jpg

Steranko’s stints on Strange Tales and Nick Fury are considered some of the most groundbreaking in the history of comics. Borrowing psychedelic and pop art influences from the era, the previously unknown artist quickly rose to prominence and completely changed readers concepts of what comic book art was, and could be. The color guides to issue #155 of Strange Tales provide a window into Steranko’s exacting approach to his work and his inflexible attention to every detail of his output, from pencils to inks, to scripting, right on down to the minutiae of plotting color guides. All of Steranko’s work from this era is highly regarded and sought after. Simply owning an original piece of these landmark issues will give the winning bidder not only bragging rights but also the responsibility of caretaking an important part of comics history. This is serious business.

    ColorGuideStrangeTales.jpg

It can also be said that no other artist had more impact in the late-70s to early-80s than John Byrne. The Canadian-born Byrne’s tenure on the X-Men set a new standard for comics as his style built on the lessons of the great illustrators that came before him while adding new layers of detail, heft, and energy that had never been seen before. The X-Men went from modest cult success to one of the biggest titles in the industry under Byrne, and it can be argued that the most important storyline in his epic run on the series is “Days of Future Past.” Dealing with disturbing subject matter, and the actual deaths of superheroes, issues #141 & 142 of the X-Men were game changers that set the table for the wave of anti-heroes and darker reframing of iconic characters that would dominate the Bronze Age and beyond. “Days of Future Past” spawned a blockbuster movie and spun off countless storylines in the Marvel Universe. The stunning color guides from these classic issues are sure to become the centerpiece of any collection. Combine the historical significance of these books with the undeniable talent of John Byrne and you end up with a wonderful and valuable collectible as well as a solid investment. Prices on original pen and ink art from the “Days of Future Past” storyline have reached the stratosphere. The original color work done for these books offers a great opportunity to own a piece of the original art process of one of the greatest stories in modern comics history.

Make sure to check out some of the other amazing color guides in this auction: Silver Surfer, Iron Man, Captain America, and Power Man and Iron Fist are all represented in this fascinating collection that showcases an often overlooked but crucial element of the painstaking process of creating comic books.

Event Auction XXXVIII Last Minute Additions

After the catalog went to press, we kept hearing from sellers asking if they could still be a part of Event Auction #38. ComicConnect never wants to disappoint a client and our consigners certainly surprised us with the comics and original comic art added after the deadline passed.

    mis12.551a.jpg  ama12.723a.jpg  act1.14755a.jpg  bat1.17062a.jpg

One of our favorite late additions is the Jack Kirby cover to Mister Miracle #14. In a private collection for over 25 years, this piece is from the artist’s phenomenal 1970's DC period and is packed with nightmarish demonic creatures that only Kirby could conjure.

Some truly incredible comics were submitted too. A highest-certified restored copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC 9.6 is stunning and a CGC 5.5 was added late as well. Want to see if he’s more powerful than a locomotive? Check out Superman on the cover of Action Comics #13 CGC 2.5. One of the greatest covers of the Golden Age in Batman #1 CGC 1.0 and a notably Bat-free cover on Detective Comics #28 CGC 8.5 Billy Wright copy.

    Don’t miss Adventure Comics #48 CGC 6.0, Adventure Comics #247 CGC 7.0, Amazing Spider-Man #1 CGC 7.5 Stan Lee Sig, Avengers #9 CGC 9.6, Flash #139 CGC 9.4, Green Lantern #7 CGC 9.4, Marvel Family #1 CGC 6.5, Showcase #22 CGC 6.0, Startling Comics #49 CGC 8.0, and Sub-Mariner #1 CGC 9.8 Stan Lee Sig.

  9. NO BUYER'S PREMIUMS — What you bid is what you pay!

The Joel Shuster illustration on this cover is a classic of simplicity and dynamism and has eye appeal above its grade. It is important to note that this is only the third appearance of Superman on the cover of a comic and that there are just fourteen copies of this incredibly rare issue that have been certified unrestored by CGC. We almost never see the book on the marketplace let alone at auction - you can throw away the guide on this one! Also of note, this is only the third time that we have offered an unrestored example of this highly desirable and truly scarce tenth issue. Out of Superman's first three cover appearances, Action #10 has the fewest unrestored copies certified by CGC with a mere fifteen issues. With over forty unrestored copies of the mega key Action #1 and twenty-seven issues of Action #7, it's no surprise that Action #10 surfaces far less often.

This issue is special in terms of it's significance as well as it's scarcity, and has a great pre-World War II cover with Superman destroying an enemy plane with one mighty punch! Serious Superman collectors already know how tough this early issue is. It should be noted, that an opportunity to acquire such a scarce and desirable issue like this one does not present itself often.
    Overstreet Guide 2018 VG- (3.5) value = $41,300.

If you are a new customer planning to make a first-time purchase over $25,000, please contact us 24 hours in advance of the item closing at 212.895.3999 or support@comicconnect.com so that we may approve your account for bidding. Walking Dead Collection: Original Art & Comics

Before the biters, floaters, geeks, lurkers, and roamers stumbled their way across our home theater screens in AMC’s The Walking Dead, the walkers first shambled their way into readers hearts in Image Comics’ mold-breaking 2003 comic. The book picked up readers, popularity, and buzz, gradually gaining a cult following. With the 2010 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series alongside the announcement of the TV series, the book is a smash with merchandising eclipsing all modern titles.

Collectors are ravenous for original art, memorabilia, and high-grade copies of the series along with the rare reprints and special editions that nearly every issue is replete with. ComicConnect’s Walking Dead Collection auction night is packed with investment-grade comics and collectibles.  Original art collectors can pick up a Tony Moore splash page from issue #1, a Tony Moore interior page from #3, the Charlie Adlard splash from issue #39 and can choose from over 100 original art lots.

While the now iconic television series has enthralled millions, its origins began in illustration. While comic books can be quite cinematic in structure, adapting them to the screen still proves problematic for many films and tv series. For instance, certain elements that worked great for the comic, might read differently to a television audience. This collection of production art is a rare opportunity to own official Walking Dead artwork from the talented John Watkiss, featuring alternative concepts of previously known characters and scenes from the comics and new ones made only for the TV show.

John Watkiss (1961-2017) was a British artist, known for his painting and his work in comics and film production. His career led him from cover artist for graphic novels to storyboard artist and character designer. The artist has collaborated with numerous high profile studios on projects including Tarzan, Atlantis, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and Sherlock Holmes. Watkiss' work has been featured in the British National Portrait Gallery and The Ford Motor Company Museum.

  13. Hi-

We migrated all the interviews on ComicZoneRadio.com to a new site but sadly lost the 3 Jay Maybruck interviews, some of the best interviews from the series. Jay Maybruck was one of the original co-founders of Sparkle City Comics. The interviews were riveting in that Jay really shared the good, the bad and the ugly about his career in comics. If anybody has these interviews please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Vincent Zurzolo

  17. My Comic Shop History is a podcast hosted by filmmaker Anthony Desiato (My Comic Shop DocumentARy, By Spoon!, Wacky Man, and the upcoming My Comic Shop Country) exploring the business, culture, and fandom of the comics retail industry. In Season 1, a comic book store fell, a community united, and a podcast was born. Each subsequent season of the podcast, currently in its fourth cycle, has tackled a distinct part of the comics industry, including collecting (Season 2), national comics retail (Season 3), and comic conventions (Season 4). The podcast also includes the subseries Beyond My Comic Shop (featuring stories in and around the comic book world) and My Comic Shop Book Club (discussions of classic favorites and current hits).

    EPISODE DESCRIPTION
Host Anthony Desiato kicks off the second half of "Con Season" with industry veteran Vincent Zurzolo, COO of the famed Metropolis Collectibles. Anthony and Vincent view decades' worth of convention history through the lens of Vincent's extensive experience on the con floor.
