  1. ^Says the Marvelite guy who bought a B&B 28 to dip his toe in the water with DC comics. ; )
  2. Thanks NoMan. Like 01TheDude, I'm a mid-range collector for this higher end silver age stuff. I started the year with #17-400 (more or less) and #3 - 5. Bought 6,7,10 & 16 on the board over summer. Got lucky with a handful of the early key ASMs from one guy (2, 9, 13, 14, 15)- thanks to a phone call from boardie THB at Alamo Con that a Houston collector was in town with a box of early marvel main hero books. That was my major 2016 collection goal.
  3. Buy 'Upgrade' GRR copies of JIM 83 and FF 1 to lower-mid copies of originals. Probably. To fill the gaps in my complete silver/bronze runs: FF 4 X-Men 1, 3, 6, 8, 19, 32, 42 Avengers 2, 5-8 Hulk 165, 188 [excluding most of TTA] Jim/Thor 85- 87, 91, 92, 94, 95, 102, 128, 135, 177, 179, 206 ST 103, 112, 122 [maybe also 111, 115] but only complete to 135. The first four are obviously the biggest. Grade and fresh bag/boards for the ASM 2-441 run I completed this year (might or might not pickup last few 417, 418, 427 and 1 or the GRR)]. Sell a short box and maybe one or two long boxes of mostly marvel silver/bronze.
  4. Interesting, I don't recall seeing a price, about how much was he asking?
  5. I've never seen explanation after thread was 'disappeared,' but this fellow basically posted two lines that said "want to sell this HOS92 comic in 0.2, get in touch with me." No price, scan/pic, or return policy, and not even any references, kudos or similar. Then solar boy rebuked the several members having fun/making jokes about the OT, until it was pointed out that OP was same fellow that started call out thread 'bought Tec 28 from Jamie Newbold missing centerfold.'
  6. ^ Agreed, didn't the general rule used to be that restored grade could be no higher than the book would have received before the resto? Or was that covered by addition of the word "apparent"?
  7. The thing I like best about this place aside from a community-driven resource of information about my passion is that maybe I'll get a chance to hawk some more of my comics here from time to time. The thing I like least about this place is when threads or posts are "poofed."
  8. Fair enough, but "control" can readily be understood to include the ability to censor and delete content they view (without appeal, really) to violate their rules. I agree they don't control what I say, and I only once sent books for grading so I'm not a big consumer of theirs.
  9. There's a back story about which I'm clueless, sorry. That story involves the people and personalities underlying the cause of action (or allegations, anyway). But on the surface there is a company that restores the top key comics into "9.4" graded condition. Some have called them "Frankenstein" books because constructed from different parts to create a monster. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Detective-Comics-33-CBCS-9-4-Restored-WHITE-Pedigree-Single-Highest-Graded-/141860053585?hash=item210784a251:g:KlsAAOSw5IJWezps&rmvSB=true There was a long thread about one such comic, that evolved into a general discussion of these 9.4 books in general (see op for link). Here's one they sold most recently: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Strange-Tales-110-CBCS-9-4-OWW-Slight-Professional-1st-Dr-Strange-Not-CGC-PGX-/142122334957?hash=item211726baed:g:iL8AAOSwknJXyvGV The seller of that comic is one of the plaintiffs, understandably aggrieved because they don't seem to be able to sell these "comic books" for the same coin as before people began to more thoroughly question how much is original comic and how much is restored? Which in turn would probably erode its ability to find new clients for the "upgrade" resto to a 9.4. This is america so they gotta sue *somebody*.
  10. My ASM 33 listed here in PGM has the same looking chips except the paper is all still there - "pre chipping" in grading jargon. Nobody graded it above 5.5 to 6.0 and it's a great looking comic except for top left damage. Just FYI. This AF 15 is a great comic, I'd say CGC would grade it 4.5 with a chance at 5.0. With a small chance a step higher or lower, imo.
  11. It's a good point. During the 70s I don't know *anyone* who would put a signature on the cover of a comic book, today it's common practice. There will always be some people who won't buy a comic with a date stamp. How prevalent that sentiment might be in future is tough to predict, something to keep in mind for big books.
  12. Never. It's loved by a large portion of the hobby. It's just personal preference. Now if the stamp was big or ugly or smudged, THEN it might actually affect the grade in the NM range. +1 I like them most of the time and view them a slight plus. I dislike other marking, e.g. I view signatures as a moderate negative and generally won't buy signed, unless it's on splash page by creator, then I like it but won't pay much for it (except like Frazetta or something). But a clean date stamp is pretty cool, imo, though I don't have many.
  13. Imo, this discussion board provides an invaluable tool for collectors and comic book/art investors for information not otherwise available elsewhere, on the internet or otherwise. Frankly to even call some of those reconstructions a "comic book" should end up with someone, any seller who calls them such, as defendant after being sued by a purchaser for fraud, allegedly I mean. At best they should fairly be called "replicas,", unless perhaps greater than 2/3 of the comic is original, and then a % of original material should be disclosed, to avoid the taint of "fraud in the inducement."
  14. Truly. Just the tiny dog ear bottom right compared to major creases most of the time down there. Great copy.
  15. I don't mean uncommon in existence (as it is typically used, like with gerber ratings). My bad. I meant uncommon in 'frequency that one comes up for sale.'
  16. Interesting stuff. I understand that 8.5s are pretty uncommon.

  19. Great collection, good luck on the pence copy.
  20. I was thinking 9.2 (bottom of spine, micro tears at staples) but, seeing comicquant's, a 9.4 wouldn't surprise me.
  21. Thrice bitten twice shy. Most of the people here are a lot smarter/more savvy/better informed than me about slabbed books. Wouldn't play pro ball either. ; )
  22. I'm actually not upset, just trying to understand what happened. As stated, having not seen these threads by Batman13, it's difficult to ascertain what happened. However, I see a lot of annoying sales tactics going on here. Selling before the books are in hand, starting threads to pimp books, charging 10% extra to see a pic, etc. Anything seems to be okay. Very disconcerting. Did someone actually do this; charge 10% extra for a picture? I am not sure if I am supposed to laugh or if this is seriously what someone did Please enlighten me. I know I did see someone with a thread once who was selling books that he said were coming back from CGC and you could buy them now (sight unseen) or pay more once they were in hand. I made the mistake once of buying in one of those "get 10% off below price if you but it unseen" on a 4.0 FF45. Of course it turned out to have a major subcrease, finally I sold it and have learned never to buy sight unseen. Actually, my new rule is to practically never buy a cgc book on the board, ironically, thanks to another mistake I made with a label notation of interior chunk missing that cuts into panel of art that I missed in the tiny pic (still trying to unload that one, I've made more noticeable disclosure of the defect and it's been slow even at a 'loss'). My own stupi dity often bites me in the bum, but fortunately not for too much most of the time.
  23. I didn't mean to say I thought he was a sweetheart or anything, as I recall his only reason for joining board is to sell a few books, not to participate in any conversation or any post anywhere outside his own threads the 'sale only' forums (other than to promote his sale thread, I mean).
