  1. I have heard that registered shipping just confirms receipt of the package, but if the recipient says the package was empty, it doesn't help. I think the respectable middleman would have to be someone with a professional reputation within the comic community...I guess I would expect a percentage for doing the work of course. Would insurance cover a "disappearing" comic? I thought about video-ing me packing the book, and signing the tape after sealing...then requesting the recipient also video the opening...maybe too much?
  2. I've sold and bought books online, as well as on these forums in past...never recall selling a single book over $500 though, although I did sell full boxes for around $350 or so. Nothing too pricey. I have a few books that I, from time to time, think about selling, but I've heard the horror stories...you ship the book, but receiver states the box was empty and wants a refund. How do the big guys do it? If I sold a $10k book, and someone indicated they didn't receive it...well, that's more than I'm willing to risk typically. What are the closest to foolproof methods of shipping the book, and protecting yourself from a scammer? I could probably sell locally, but the obvious downsides to that appear...less buyers, likely less money for the sale...but cash in hand transaction. Be nice if someone had a respectable middleman service everyone could use...aside from an auction house. I sell the book, and just get a 3rd party to hold the book, until the buyer provides the funds. Thanks for any thoughts and advice!
  3. I think I'm understanding there might have been some cleaning to the cover, so not sure if that would be resto or not, but I think he's estimating it around a 5.0, with the cleaning.
  4. Got a Facebook buddy selling a nice Golden Age USA Comics #17...no idea if this is a good price or not? I don't see any recent sales, but $1400 seems a little high...you guys have any opinions?
  5. Not bad...I'm looking for something in the 2.0 - 3.0 arena, so $100 - $200 would be a nice amount to go towards my upgrade.
  6. I'm also a completist, and needed an FF#3 at a budget price at the time...I bought my copy probably 25 years ago, and have no idea how much I paid. I'll have to post a pic of my copy when I get home.
  7. I bought a copy of Fantastic 4 #3 many years ago, but it is a Remainder Copy...really nice shape aside from that, so it's a bit heart breaking to see it like this. Anyway, been thinking of upgrading for years, and now might be the time...but wondering if there's still a market for a book like this...obviously, I bought it, so there is likely some interest...but I have no idea what value to assign a copy. Would these be considered poor, regardless of the rest of the condition of the book? Thanks for any input...
  8. Excellent books...cannot go wrong with owning the BWS Conan run, especially at those prices!
  9. Might be awhile...I think I am going to take it to MegaCon in late May, drop it off with CGC. I don't have any slabbed books, so this is new for me to leave my book with someone.
  10. These all make the best sense to me, using a trustworthy 3rd party sounds like the best way to go. Ebay is great for less expensive transactions, where if it goes south, you're not out the bank.
  11. I don't know what day it will hit me, but one day I will likely want to see my collection. My question has to do with how to do the safest transaction these days? I used to buy my "high" dollar books (for me anyway...most I ever spent was $1100 on an AF15, and I found someone selling it on an electronic bulletin board, and mailed the guy a check). I've seen the horror stories...you mail out a book, and the buyer claims the box was empty. Who knows if the seller put the book in the box, or if the buyer just claimed it was empty. Is selling in person the only "safe" method? Even then, who's going to walk into a meeting place with $10k on them in cash? You guys have been doing this for years...what's the best method? Thanks in advance!
  12. I don't think this book has ever been graded or pressed, but I could be wrong. I bought it around 2001...not sure if CGC was grading back then? Certainly wasn't as popular to do, and it was raw when I got it...seems unlikely if it was graded back then, they would have cracked it just to sell it.
  13. Thanks, I think I will check out the .5, to see a good comparison!
  14. What do you guys think? 1.0? 1.5 0.5? Please note missing chunk at bottom staple of front cover. Lots of glare, but hopefully not too much. I honestly can't tell for sure if the staples are still secure to the cover, as there is some very old tape around this area, and I don't want to manipulate the book too much. Centerfold is still secure though.
  15. I have those, and my books are pretty ugly, so they might stand out...but good luck finding them if they're just floating around out there in another state.
