When to slab, when to sell raw?
CHASEnBLUE replied to kcm54's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
All great advice from boardies here as always... IMHO as a lifetime collector and ebay store seller, it boils down to what you want in return considering what you have in raw state. For example, I have approximately 15K comics in my "keep" collection. All purchased by me at cover or less and I have a continuous update strategy/plan in place to stay current in today's market. Grading/shipping maybe $25 at the most each book (for sake of argument) depending on your membership level with CGC. Of many examples most of us here could potentially give, I have maybe 100 (and some change) copies of Venom Lethal Protector #1 remaining as well as Spawn #1 in raw form. At this point in life so many years later, the purchase cost/loss of those books is really nil, though the current or updated investment would be to evaluate and then grade each one with the current grading/shipping costs in mind. If I have 20 that most likely will grade 9.6 or higher, then I stand to gain from my own needs/wants/expectations. The raw copies say at 9.2 below, I would consider selling raw to fund the grading of the higher graded copies. Again, many scenarios could unfold, so consider thinking through, realistically, not hopefully, what is most likely to transpire in your likely return financially vs. the time/energy/money in the unknown or guesstimate returns. Just another perspective to consider...similar to swing thoughts if you are a golf person. We know how that goes... -

Great thread! I should have read this one a long time ago and kept up with it. You mentioned the auctions though I mainly sell slabs, I completely gave up on auctions through my eBay store because I got to the point where the winning bidders would never pay and I would have to start over again. I probably blocked around 20 before I said no more auctions LOL. On course with the recent conversation here, I probably keep 10 to 15 items up on average. Sometimes more depending what's hot in the modern slab world. This average I would say is fine for me since it's a side hobby to pay for my own collection likes and getting my return on purchased books. Lately, it has been anywhere from two to four sold in a week the last six weeks or so. Plus, some side sales off those purchases. Since I built up a decent watcher/follow base for my purposes, I always send coupons when someone buys from me, and the repeat buyers are usually very easy to deal with. I normally give them a small discount and throw a few extra comics in, which keeps them coming back for more and feeds the top-rated designation. Some have even asked me about specific books and I'll get them slabbed, having guaranteed a sale when they get back from CGC. Last year I was just under the threshold we're still lucky to be under - maybe? I haven't really put too much up yet this year, but that could change. I'm still just a little under 5K so far. My link is in my profile here, though I have always preferred to sell here on the boards when I have put up a few runs.

My wife is finally complaining. One of the five bedrooms has way too many boxes now...damn. I do have a storage but freaked out about moving more to the storage though I have not had any problems with the storage for more than a decade...

It's been almost a year since my very good friend opened his comic book and collectibles store. Some members from here have stopped by in support which I truly appreciate! He recently created a very cool promo for his store which I would like to share. If you are ever in his area, please stop by and mention me to him (Daniel), or if you see something you like on his website give him a call and let him know you saw this here. He will hook you up with great deals! I do not get any kickbacks for this from him, he is just a really good man - and if you knew him like I do I am confident you would feel the same. Please see my original post in this thread if you have not already for more info. https://chewmies.com/ Thank you for looking!

Amazing Spider-man #300 Grade?
CHASEnBLUE replied to John Lafleur's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
9.2 - 9.4 maybe based on this one pic. But as mentioned, more detailed pics needed. Looks like potential right side corner issues and a few areas on the spine that need to be seen better at minimum. -
