We shouldn't limit it to the top winners. We should count how many prizes there are, then 1st place gets first pick and so on until we run out of prizes.

That way we don't discourage people from wanting to donate a prize. If everyone donated, essentially everyone would get a prize depending on how well they did in the contest. We just shouldn't make donating a prize mandatory!

That way if someone is new and wants to test how well they grade or place, they can wait to donate a prize until the next contest. Especially if we're going to do 4 contest's a year, as hinted at.

The top scorer gets his pick of the prizes.  If he doesnt want what CGC offers, he is free to pick something else.  On down the line for 2nd place 3rd etc.

I'm tending to agree with these two. Also, thank you! I'm very excited CGC is doing this :whee:

  2. I'm amazed and grateful to be a 2x winner, thank you to the very kind judges. Everyone really stepped it up this year, congrats to all the winners! Even the posts that didn't win were fantastic :golfclap:. Thank you so very much @electricprune   for doing this a second time and letting others share in your winnings, again. You're wonderful for doing it (and just in general, I'm sure). (Big props to Skow for being a step above the rest and hooking up onlyweakness, just amazing, as was the idea to post the thread as an entry).

Thanks for doing this. We need more stuff like this around here.

Most definitely, I've been waiting for something fun like this and a huge huge thank you to @Point Five
for putting this on (and allowing me in).

  4. A Requiem for Thirdgreenham’s Grading Contest

(sung to the tune of Snot feat Corey Taylor’s Requiem – I was going to link to the song but was unable to find a radio safe version, sorry, needless to say there are plenty of not radio safe versions on YouTube if you would like to sing along – Also, Long Live CMFT)

    We were ready for anything

    Everyone knows some pain

I see loss every time someone says Thirdgreenham

When you know the contest is hard

And all the boards begin to care

    Who the best graders are

I bonded and had fun and it was everything

But it had to go away, feels like yesterday

Loss of fun in a certainly hard time

The pain, the loss, it’s unreal

So, I know you all understand

When I say it’s gone or it’s left

Without the contest, what fresh heck is this

    It is not gone

    Memories inside of us

    It is not gone

    The grading is within us

    It is not gone

    Thirdgreenham’s light is in us

Now it’s time to mourn the loss my friend

    And through this song

The Grading Contest memories won’t end

    We will see that

The legacy lives on without you

Until the day you left us

Without the contest, what fresh heck is this

    It is not gone

    Memories inside of us

    It is not gone

    The grading is within us

    It is not gone

    Thirdgreenham’s light is in us

Why’d you have to go? I need another chance

But the contest is gone and hope’s gone with it

Death of hope without you in it

    It is not gone

    Memories inside of us

    It is not gone

    The grading is within us

    It is not gone

    Thirdgreenham’s light is in us

A spark from grading, forever glowing brightest

    Cannot last

But to say ‘please grade me’ is

To wipe the tear away fast

I hold up my prizes and cherish

    The guesses that I had

Since it is gone I’m missing each second

    Wishing for it

    Back!

It was the Thirdgreenham grading contest that got me hooked on boards to begin with (before that, I just lurked here and there but mostly just checked the CGC return time thread) and was, without hyperbole, the most fun I had online in years (since matched by the Secret Santa / Raffle event each year on the boards, but never topped). These boards are really my only form of social media and the contest was the first thing to really force me to involve myself instead of just lurking. I still have the prizes I won in each contest (as well as all my SS and Raffle gifts). The first prize I ever won, or item I ever received, on these boards was the prize I won from Kav in the grading contest (Adventure Comics 271). He also included a small doodle on the package he sent me (pic below), which I have in a place of honor on my bookshelf. Everyone was so kind and I remember thinking that these boards were just an amazing place. (By the time a few more months of lurking had passed, I realized that it was certain things that brought out the best in the boards, but also things that brought out the not so great, which just made the contest all that more special). So a huge thank you, to @thirdgreenham to @sckao to @kav and to everyone else who made it such a fun and uplifting experience each year.  I miss it, especially now. :sorry::foryou:

  5. Spoiler

Yay! Thank you! It really was fun to write that out. Big thanks to the judges, though I hope I'm not the reason the American judge was beaten. It's so incredibly generous that you decided to turn 1 prize into 3. Big congrats to all of the other winners! I have no clue what books to pick. Thank you!!

    Ok entires are officially closed!!

Winner will be posted by 3 PM Eastern Time.

I had a blast participating. It was a unique idea for a contest and it was nice to be creative for a bit. Thank you so much for putting this together and congrats on the registry win!

  7.                 An Ode

There was a nerdy child, long ago

Bullied and beaten, as these things go

    Books and comics became sanctuary

To this child as he did grow

    Through maturity the fascination stayed

    Escapism from the world decayed

One room now a wall to wall library

Best known as the reality blockade

Then one day, a new site was found

The CGC Boards, where nerds abound

Where the best can be legendary

With comics that leave you spellbound

From then on, a slab convert was born

Though he quickly began to mourn

So many raws but ‘Cases are Necessary!’

But how to pay became a thorn

Until the amazing contest of Electricprune

Who most kindly decided to share his boon

For proving his ToD set had no contemporary

A hero, he offered up 3 slabbings, submitted soon

So, allow me to dedicate this ode to you

To sing praise of your feat… and as my entrance, too

Everyone, raise a glass and cheer, as is customary

We will sing your ballads long after your reign is through!

    :martini:

  8. So, a late winner will wrap the contest. Question 3 has been answered by @Max Carnage. The answer I was looking for was an owl, both a typical Druid's familiar in D&D and who appeared in the 1928 short story book The House at Pooh Corner. Two, now very famous, characters debuted in that book, Owl and Tigger. A tiger would not usually be a low-level Druid familiar, but I know several DM's who either have or would allow it (usually it is conditional on a good backstory), so either answer was acceptable. All questions have now been answered. Thanks to all!
