Decorating the Morlock Tunnels: Art under $500

One of my favorite pieces I own is the preliminary drawing to the first appearance of Kid Loki. I bought it for $15 and I paid an additional $15 for shipping. Easily the best $30 I ever spent -
I’m interested in one of the pages in this photo. (You can have him contact me if that’s better for him- I can get my info)

September HA Auction Looking interesting
Grant Turner replied to batman_fan's topic in Original Comic Art
It wasn’t him. He just posted on FB that he didn’t bid on this or the Iron Fist page, as he got the page he wanted last week. He was happy that Byrne prices are going up though! -
Strange Tales 106 pg 10 by Ayers! I had to sell off some things I really liked to make room for this but I think it was worth it. The FF is my favorite team, and Reed is my favorite hero, and both were missing from my collection. I wanted the earliest silver age page I could find (and afford) so I’m really pleased with this one. It ties with ASM 1 and FF 12 as only the fifteenth appearance of the team. The page features all 4 members, all identified by name and all using powers. And while not drawn by Kirby, Ayers is at his most Kirby-esque here (especially with Sue) And it’s the first appearance of Carl Zante!

I enjoyed LOKI very much and really wanted to commemorate the experience by purchasing something Kid Loki related. I did a quick search to see if any page from his first appearance was still floating around (it obviously wasn’t, duh me) but, when I put Pasqual Ferry into the comic art tracker search engine, I found a preliminary sketch of his, that I immediately identified as from KL’s first appearance so for $30 including shipping from Spain, I got this, and I couldn’t be more delighted!

The Tales to Astonish 44 page was the one I wanted, but I didn’t want to go over 12k (ended up going for 18) my back up was the Strange Tales 106 page with all four of the FF. It leaked over my max just a bit. Wanted to keep it at 5k, got it for $5,200 (not complaining)

That’s what I ended up doing!

Well, my initial statement was slightly off. Turned out the two pieces I had my eye on were both on Saturday, but the gist was still the same: the marquee piece was second, the piece I would’ve wanted if the other fell through was first. But with that, my strategy did work! I placed my best and final bid on the second piece. I was higher bidder for a week, and then just before pre-bidding closed, I was outbid. Which then freed me up for the first piece which I won! (and truth be told, the second piece ended up going for way more than my best and final so I can’t even be sad about missing out as I never had a chance!)

I’m not looking for some big insider secret here, but I am curious… im interested in two things in an upcoming auction. One ends Thursday and one ends Saturday. I would want the Saturday page more, but I would certainly want the Thursday page if the Saturday one didn’t pan out. How would you plan your bidding for that? I ultimately decided to put my best and final on the Saturday page and if it’s met by Thursday then I’ll move on the other page, and if it’s not met, I’ll let it ride and just say goodbye to the Thursday option. but in the future, what should I do? How would you handle it?

Marvel comic art with Stan Lee handwritten -script notes
Grant Turner replied to comicwiz's topic in Original Comic Art
Here’s an example of Stan’s handwriting from Avengers 9. It’s kind of hard to decipher (I think it says “Not Muscular- one of Don’s biggest faults” and is probably a note to the inker) and an example of Jack’s notes from layouts he did on Tales of Suspense 77 (much easier to read and more focused on story) -
Request addition to comic book notes/desciption

Hi Jennifer- is there a way to see if they added the first appearance info or not? -

I’m very excited about this one. As my collection has sort of settled in, and I’ve got all the high-end pieces that I think I’m going to get, I’ve shifted my focus to those lesser pieces that mean a lot to me sentimentally. Especially pages from series or stories arc I loved as a kid. One of my all time favorites is Defenders 100, so, although not a page from that book, this is from the story arc leading to it (the Six-Figured Hand!) and it features several of my favorite characters; Dr Strange, Valkyrie, Hellcat, Nighthawk, and Son of Satan! Plus it’s the 2nd app of Gargoyle. Maybe most exciting of all, it’s my first page with Sinnott inks! I have a sketch of his, but here is the master at work. Look at that 4th panel, stunning!

Request addition to comic book notes/desciption

Jennifer, im afraid I was sleeping a little in the job. The comic was sent in already before I reached out to make the suggestion. It’s there scheduled for grading. Is it too late now to put a bug in someone’s ear? I can show the evidence to verify the first appearance, and it’s a character that had 50+ appearances plus became a major character on Agents of shield -
I’d like to suggest that you add “first appearance of Al “Mack” Mackenzie to Nick Fury vs SHIELD #3. Can I request that here or is there a dedicated area to make those suggestions?

So happy to add a Power Pack page to my collection. I loved this series as a teen in the 80’s. (Those in the know understand just how hard it is to track down early Brigman PP pages.) this one’s got all four kids, in their newly acquired costumes, and 3 of them using their powers! got it from Singapore and the shipping was almost more than the page, but it was totally worth it. Thanks Weng Keong Tam for making it happen!
