I don't think that would have made a difference as the consigner has a large selection of Miller DD art and this was only put up for auction to pay for something he likes much better.

The other cockrum x-men gsx was much more impressive

Its the David Mandel effect, they wanted something owned by Mandel and help him pay off his X-Wing.

It went for 50% more than the Xenozoic Tales #5 Cover which was published the same year.

X-Men #121 Bynre page did not go for a discount but set a record for a page from the issue. The pages you must be referring to are the ones from the Phoenix Saga (129-137) that you comparing to. $81K is a very healthy number for the Alpha Flight issue, pages from that have gone for much less. Comparing a Phoenix Saga Byrne X-Men page and an Alpha Flight Byrne X-Men page is apples and oranges. There was no discount here. I think it got a record for a page from that issue. It went for $30K more than another page back in Sept of last year. There was only one other Byrne X-Men panel page (outside of Phoenix Saga) that went for more than the X-Men #121 in ha and that was from issue #113 and it had the whole team.

I saw it in person at OAX, Cominc Connect had it framed in their booth. I really liked it but knew it would go high.

Alan Davis posted that Paul Neary has died after a long illness. I loved his inking over Alan's work especially Excalibur, he will be missed. Below is a copy of what Alan posted:

Too many entries to police, we had just under 1700 entries not everyone submitted 5 entries each so there was about 350 who participated. Most people post their art during the year but a small number don't and then rush to post before the end of the year. Not sure what evidence you have that people post art they didn't get in 2023. Many don't participate in Best of and rarely post art but I know a number of the that do get a good many of pieces during 2023 and many high end but they don't usually;;y publicize the fact. That may be why a number of you think people post art they got out side of 2023. For me I have been a part of Best of for longer than CAF is been around. I just want people to post the art so I can see what I missed what was posted the previous 12 months. If a few get posted that they own and they didn't get in 2023 I don't mind much. They are sharing and that is one of the reasons for the Best of when it started some 25 years ago.

Its done on the honor system. Pieces that are posted during 2023. The Best of is a way to share pieces acquired during the year. So many pieces are posted in the CAF during the year its easy to miss them. Best of is a way to see the ones you missed poster in the year.

These were pieces that were for sale publically. He would post it for sale even though he didnt own it.

I remember a collector, who would offer comic art to people but he didn't own the artwork. It would be up on a dealer's site or in a private collection. HE would "sell" it get the money, pay the real owner then send the artwork to the buyer and pocket the profits. Both are scums.

I used to be more of an impulse buyer when I started out. At a con and a See an artists I like and flip thru his pile of art. Then find. something I like that is inexpensive, years later I look at it and it isn't part of my core collecting or has a strong story I like. Last 10 years I have stopped the impulse buying and try to concentrate on stuff that really appeals to me. Impulse art is nice but over time you have art you don't have a strong connection to or attachment to visually.

What keeps me from spending 5x my usual budget? Nostalgia It must be something I have a strong connection to reading or seeing when I was growing up. This basically eliminates anything done in the last 25 years.
