  1. Just had to add my recent experience to the thread. I have not used CCS in more than 3 years because I wasn't happy about the results. Since then I taught myself to clean/press and I am pretty good at it and the resulting grades back that up. I've been able to upgrade books I cracked at home and raw books come back with great results too. Now, why would I use CCS again recently? Well, I had two books that I bought based on the grader notes hoping to bump them. One of then (9.4) had an indent on the front cover that I could sort of see with grader notes stating the same, and the other (9.2) did not look pressed at all with a stacking bend, some spine ticks and some dirt on the back cover, but no grader notes. These are bronze age books that I would normally take care of myself, but I was curious about having CCS have a crack at them, and I felt sure that the defects were definitely pressable and just maybe I had a better chance of getting those bumps. I fast tracked them too. Unfortunately, the book with the indent came back same grade (9.4) with grader notes still saying there was an indent on the front cover - ok maybe I was wrong, the indent was not pressable. Maybe. The other book that clearly was never pressed came back same grade (9.2) but went from white pages to off-white to white. I am going to chalk this up to a bad decision on my part, but I do have to note that the reason I stopped using CCS a while ago was because the pressing just wasn't any good. They didn't press out what I knew then and know now is pressable. Comic book condition and defects and all the rest is subjective of course, and even though I own officially thousands of CGC books (don't remind my wife) and I have been submitting/cleaning and pressing for a bit, I am no expert, just someone with more experience than the average bear. However, I can't help but feel that I wasted my money on a service that I should have known was going to disappoint. No I won't use CCS again, doing it myself works out way better. I just had to remind myself of that.
  2. Well, I have had poor experience with 2 out of 3 ASM #25 Remastered books encapsulated by CGC. Now, I just received a brand new copy (9.8) because I can't stay away from them. This book has been encapsulated in the double wide holder and the inner well is tightly fitted to the comic book. This is the same style of holder (whether new or not, I don't know) that is used on the ASM #800's of which I have over a dozen in different variants and duplicates. I theorize that this new ASM #25 will never ever see a issue with SCS -- because its encapsulated in a properly designed holder for a thick modern book. My hope is that 1) CGC will come back to me on a resolution for my already shifted and damaged book, and that the copy I have in progress will be slabbed correctly. Moving forward, I am scrutinizing all of my books for issues with how they are slabbed, and in fact, I've already started to and will continue to reslab all of my books in older holders. It's cheap enough, and it gives me piece of mind for my enormous investment in comic books.
  3. You would think that ASM 25 is not the first thick/heavy book that has been slabbed, I know I have plenty of them. I fully believe the issue is caused by the way the chosen holder secures the book. I don't know what the solution would be, I also know that CGC must have some R&D going on, since they keep changing the holders. I guess we shouldn't collect, grade or slab thick books because they will be damaged in handling.
  4. I recently received three slabs from cgc, I had "reholdered", rubber banded together with just a bit of bubble wrap not secured to the books at all. I was surprised, given that I sent the books in for reholder (on my dime) because they had cracked in shipment from ebay...go figure. With 175+ books currently submitted for grading, I am a bit nervous and holding off submitting anything else.
  5. I just returned a 9.8 ASM 25 Remastered I received because straight out the shipping box, both staples were shifted. Then I checked the one I already owned that looked just fine when I put it in a storage box with my other books. Yep, top staple shifted - not bottom. For both books, I could tap them back in place. I have an inquiry out to CGC customer service, but I also have an ASM 25 submitted to grading. I am hoping if this is a case issue, my new book is slabbed correctly. ASM 25s aren't the most expensive books I own, but they aren't cheap and they don't show up too often for purchase, so getting a resolution that involves not owning these books at all -- well, would suck.
  6. First time posting, long time collector. I have an issue with my CGC 9.8 Amazing Spider-man #25 Remastered variant and its quite a disappointment. I bought two of the books at 9.8 within the last month, one came in right away, one took a little longer since it was from Canada. The one from Canada arrived with both staples slipped, ie, the book slide to the right and pulled the staples from the cover. I consulted the shipper and we decided that I would return it. That was two days ago. Tonight I decided to pull out my first copy -- that was fine two weeks ago, and noticed that the top staple had slipped too. I've read the stuff about shaken comic syndrome on these forums, and I honestly don't buy it. I've get tons of slabbed books delivered in all kinds of boxes and packaging styles. I have had slabs arrive cracked - never saw a cover slide like, now, TWO of the same comic book arriving at my house. What I did hear from my buddies on Instagram is that this happens with thicker books, and Amazing Spider-man 300 - which I have several of at 9.0 up to 9.8 - were notorious for this issue. None of mine have that problem right now, and hopefully they won't spontaneously develop it by sitting in storage boxes. Since I can't find any useful information out there about how CGC is going to respond to my frantic request for help -- I thought I would appeal to the community to appease my nerves. Not only did I pay a lot for this book, but I have one in to CGC for grading, and I replaced the one I had to send back with another one -- at a hefty premium that is on its way to me. I included pictures of the book I sent back for refund, but my book has the same issue but with only the top staple.
