I'm sure this is going to stir up some buzz, as I understand there is a definitive line between old collectors, that focus on Golden and Silver Age books, and Modern Age readers/collectors.... let's leave the speculators out of this, if at all possible...
Because this is a topic I'm curious about, which is based on the essential collecting, not the speculation market.
I say this ahead of time, because I know, from a 'collecting', 'financial' perspective, these books are going up in value... BUT
I don't like old grails. I don't want them. I'm 40 and clearly, doing the math, did not grow up reading books from the 70s and earlier. I got into reading books in the 90s... and yes, books that I read back then hold a special place in my heart. I appreciate and understand nostalgia very well.
I guess my point is, specifically to, Hulk 181 let's say... I've read that issue, it's awful. The art is awful, the story is awful, the book is awful. I have absolutely zero interest in having it in my collection. Bragging rights, as it were, doesn't entice me as much as it does the price tag it demands just to own it. To say I own the '1st appearance of...' does not hold value to me anymore. That is my speculator talking.
From a reader and true collector point of view... I struggle with old books, because reading them now is very difficult. This holds true for almost all books I grew up with as well. I own zero books from my old reading days, the 90s. I've reread them. They are awful. Now this isn't true for all old books. I believe that DKR is still a masterpiece for instance. I still thoroughly enjoy reading Days of Future Past. I'm not saying all old books are garbage, but I have a hard time appreciating anything now that doesn't hold the test of time.
Just to be clear, I also think most new books are garbage too lol. Just leveling the playing field.
Anyway, am I really the only one that feels this way? It seems so... but I don't know... just curious really.
It sounds as if you don't really like comics in general

Not to mention the strange mask coloring on Avengers #11. But I guess that wasn’t his fault?

At first glance I hated it but the more I look at it the more I think it could be ok. Similar to how I hated ASM 300 first time I saw it but like it now

I never could come to like Curt Swan's art.
It really does matter WHEN you're introduced to the artist. If you were a Superman fan as a kid you're going to have an emotional attachment.
I couldn't get over how wide Superman's waist always was. As someone who followed bodybuilding, his Supes just wasn't as virile enough for me.
Blasphemy!

I had very similar feelings about my comics 10 years ago, maybe a little longer. But I didn't sell anything, I just stacked the boxes in multiple closets and completely forgot about them. I did not look at them once. If I thought about them I couldn't imagine ever collecting again. About 3 months ago I decided I would finally sell them. Pulled them all out to begin putting together a detailed list of what I have. Next thing I knew I had fallen in love with them again. Haven't sold a single issue, instead I've added about 30 books to my collection. Good times.

Assuming the seller is open to offers, how do you calculate what percentage off to ask the seller?

Personal favorite is the King-Size Hulk 1 posted on the front page. That cover is way ahead of its time and Steranko‘s hulk is perfect, never been drawn better

Very poor presentation.
Easy book to get a better-presenting copy at that grade.
Yeah it’s really strange. Looks no better then a 7.5, if even that high. It’s so grossly over graded it seems like something fishy’s going on, although I’m not sure what.

You can add this one to your list of high grade comic books with odd inserts. It is Action Comics 484 with the cellophane insert. This one still has an unopened cellophane packed stapled into the comic book. The cello package contains a one of 4 different Superman posters. I would be very surprised to see another one come along in this grade or higher.
You can learn more about it by checking out the following post:

I haven’t read the entire thread so maybe this has been said. But looks like seller buys graded books, 9.2 - 9.6, cracks them, takes photographs rather than scans so they can’t be compared to graded books, and lists them for what he/she paid or a little above and is hoping people desire to gamble will sell them. Not a terrible idea, I think people really enjoy sending books in and receiving quality grades.
