  1. This cover could be interpreted in many ways.... Casper and Wendy enjoying their own special brew of Cloud Beer? Or maybe it's supposed to be some type of twist on an ice cream float. Or since the cover is October, perhaps Warren Kremer was celebrating Oktoberfest after all. Maybe he was thirsty You decide Anyway, as the Germans say during Oktoberfest...Prost! to Warren Kremer and all his many years of great covers! http://comics.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/ComicView.aspx?PeopleSetComicID=790298 To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 4. Complete from the 1950s thru 1970s Picked up Richie Rich Vault of Mystery #1 from the last ComicLink auction. This completed my early RR#1s set. http://comics.www.collectors-society.com/registry/comics/PeopleSetDetail.aspx?PeopleSetID=4422 To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 5. It's taken me a year to add 50,000 points to my collection. I upgraded Richie Rich Success Stories #2 from 9.0 to 9.2. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
  6. Spooky #5 CGC 9.4 I haven't sent any raw comics in to get certified since 2007. I decided to use my Collectors' Society Coupon on a few Spookys that I acquired from Bill Carpenter back in 2002. I was really happy with the results. Spooky #3 CGC 8.5 Spooky #4 CGC 6.0 Spooky #5 CGC 9.4 Finest Known Spooky #7 CGC 9.4 Tied for Finest Known To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 7. I've added a few Spookys to my set this week. Take a look http://comics.www.collectors-society.com/registry/comics/PeopleSetDetail.aspx?PeopleSetID=18349 Here's a nice black cover for the Flea Circus to enjoy. 8. It's taken me about 3 1/2 years to add 100,000 points. In the first few years of the Registry, 200,000 points would put you in the top 10 or 20 contributors. Since then, there have been lots of sets added and more and more people joining. I enjoy watching other people's sets grow and viewing their scans and descriptions. Here's what put me over 200,000. 9. Richie Rich #21 I've been collecting RR for several decades now and finding a high grade RR#21 has been nearly impossible. With only 3 copies certified by CGC over the past 10 years it is easily the most difficult to obtain. There are lots of listings for raw low grade ones, but, nothing in high grade. Most other issues have at least 6 or more certified copies. Issues with 3 certified: #21 Issues with 6 certified: #12, #13, #22 Issues with 8 certified: #14, #24 Issues with 9 certified: #20 In 2003 I bought a huge collection of high grade Harvey Comics (Richie Rich, Casper, Spooky, Little Dot, Little Lotta, Hot Stuff, etc) from Bill Carpenter and he only had a VG copy of RR #21. I knew Quinton Clem (Harveyland) had a certified set of RR including the #21. Over the years I asked him many times to sell it, but, he would never part with it. I was fortunate to be able to acquire it in a Heritage Sunday Auction last month (Sep 2013). In 2009 when the 9.0 first came on the auction block I'm sure I passed on it thinking Heritage will soon slab another file copy in a higher grade, but, so far, that has never happened. Maybe they are sitting on a pile of them and at some future date will send them off to get certified and sell them or maybe this 9.0 is as high as it gets. 10. (Collectors' Society --- Harveyland) (ebay --- spookytuffghost) Sometimes you don't know your friends are gone until you see their collection up for sale at Heritage. Quinton was a great guy and every week had Harvey Comics listed on ebay. I never could figure out how he kept acquiring them all, but, I do know that he was one of the 1st to purchase file copies from the Geppi collection. In the late 90s he helped me fill in the last few holes in my 1st Richie Rich set. I remember buying my 1st Richie Rich #1 and Harvey Hits #9 (Richie Rich's Golden Deeds) from him. For many years I did not know the true identity of Harveyland who early on surpassed my Richie Rich set to be #1 for years 2010, 2011, & 2012. I remember back in the 2001 to 2003 time frame his scanner was going bad and all his listings had horrible pictures. He finally purchased a new scanner and I congratulated him on his much better scans. Anyway I'll miss seeing his listings on ebay. He was a great Harvey Collectors. The following is his obituary. I can't believe they didn't mention anything about his real passion of collecting Harvey Comics. July 10, 1963 - August 11, 2012 SALEM - Quinton Clem went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, when he passed away on August 11, 2012 at the Benedictine Providence Home in Mount Angel after a year-long battle with cancer. He was known for his kindness to everyone and sense of humor, which he maintained throughout his treatments and hospice care. Quinton was born in an Army hospital in Berlin, Germany to MAJ Robert Dale and Mrs. Mylet Jean Clem. Upon his father's retirement and re-location to Salem, Oregon, he attended Candalaria, Liberty, and Salem Heights Elementary schools in south Salem. He was the youngest of five Clem kids, and as the baby of the family, was teased about being "the favorite child." After relocation of the family, Quinton completed high school in South Sioux City, Nebraska and then earned a bachelor's degree in Business Management from nearby Wayne State College. He returned to Salem in 1987 and was employed with Bi-Mart for two years before accepting employment at SAIF Corporation, where he worked for over twenty years. Quinton loved his family and was considered to be the favorite Uncle to the Clem and Salchenberg nieces and nephews in the Salem area. He was unofficially adopted into other families that he loved and who loved him. Quinton was very proud of his accomplishments at SAIF, especially his recent promotion to Claims Director. He spoke often about his respect and admiration for the managers and fellow employees, and they returned those feelings through their tremendous outpouring of support and love to Quinton during this past year. Quinton is loved by many because he loved each one of us. He is survived by his brothers Dan (Debbie), Doug, Jeff (Katie) and sister Cathy (Tim), uncles and aunts in Nebraska, and many nieces and nephews, including his extended families: the Levines and the Cottings. Quinton will always be missed very much. We are comforted and find solace in that he accepted Jesus as his personal Savior. Quinton feels pain no more - in God's presence he now knows only joy and comfort. A Memorial Service for all (family, friends, SAIF employees) will be held at City View Funeral Home, 390 Hoyt Street SE, Salem, OR on August 20, 2012 at 2 pm. A reception following will be hosted by employees of SAIF at 400 High Street SE. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos and stories about their relationship and time with Quinton. Any donations made to the American Cancer Society are greatly appreciated. Richie Rich #12 is the 3rd Rarest in the set in High Grade. I own the 7.0 and Quinton owned the 8.5 and the 9.2. Here's a scan of the 8.5 I won from his estate at a Heritage Auction with his picture superimposed on it. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
  11. Met the Flea Circus and had a great time! I noticed in one of bagofleas' many posts that the Flea Circus is headquartered in Tallahassee. As I was going to be driving thru last month and I just read the post of him meeting Tnerb, I decided to reach out and ask if he'd like to meet somewhere. It's always akward at 1st meeting someone new, but, after a few minutes of trading comic stories, we became friends. I've been reading all of his posts and also watching his interest in Harvey Comics start to catch on. New competition. I search his Casperss Ghostland set and noticed he didn't have #82 which I had mistakenly purchased a duplicate, so I brought it along as a gift. I had no idea that he did the same and I got Casper's Ghostland #48. Total Awesome!!! Thanks Stephen! I felt a little burned because he brought out the Spooky Spooktown #20 CGC 9.6 (Black Cover with Frankenstein hanging up Spooky and the Ghostly Trio in the closet) WHICH HE OUTBID ME ON! Oh well, I least I got to hold it and know it found a good home. http://comics.www.collectors-society.com/registry/comics/ComicDetail.aspx?PeopleComicID=397735&PeopleSetID=48624 It was great looking at his New Mutants #10 in Gem Mint 10! I've never seen a 10 before. http://comics.www.collectors-society.com/registry/comics/ComicDetail.aspx?PeopleComicID=131698&PeopleSetID=20205 Sharing your passion in comics face to face is very rewarding. 12. Another Enhancement Pushed To Production Without Testing CGC you need to hire a quality assurance tester. Once again you've moved a change into production that has removed all the CRLF (Carriage Return Line Feed) in everyone's descriptions. Now there is no spacing at all. 13. Creamy Peanut Butter One of the most annoying things that most dealers do once their inventory has been slabbed whether it is a banknote, coin, or comic book, is to put a sticker on it. I hate stickers. I hate sticker residue even worse. You start peeling from the corner then you you get part way and the sticker starts ripping. What a pain! You end up with a gooey mess all over your 9.8. Heritage stickers are great! 99.9% of the time they come off easy and peanut butter method is not needed. Metropolis and ComicLink are tied for 1st place with the biggest sticker, most difficult to remove, and most annoying!!!! Why they can't just place their monster size sticker on the bag instead of the slab is beyond me. I think we should all revolt and demand at least 10% discount from each because of their annoying stickers and the time it takes to remove! Step 1: Peel the sticker off the best you can. Step 2: Use your fingernail to scrape as much sticker residue off. Step 3: Put a small dab of creamy peanut butter on your finger, put it over the sticker residue, and gently rub using circular motions. Step 4: Wipe of peanut butter with a damp paper towel. Step 5: You might have to repeat Step 3 & 4 one more time. Step 6: I alway finish up by spraying Windex on the area and wiping it clean. I hope this helps everyone.
  14. Another Milestone Reached It's been a big climb to 150,000, but more than that its been lots of fun!!! I'm glad that Geppi decided to sell off all the Harvey File Copies and I've been able to pick up a few gems. Here's a picture of what put me over the 150,000 mark. 15. 1000th comic added to the Registry Richie Rich Billions #37 Inspired by the Mount St. Helen's eruption, Richie's volcano explodes and covers him and Freckles with money. Richie asks, "Ever see volcanic-cash before, Freckles?" To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
