I have a modern that I submitted (Guardians of the Galaxy 62 to be specific) with a tear of similar size or maybe slightly smaller on the back cover, and that received a 9.0 (never review your submission books on less than 4 hours of sleep, can't believe I missed it.) I originally estimated a 9.4 but had hoped for better with a press. If I remember later I'll take a pic when I get home.

I have received 2 Media Mail boxes of comics that were inspected by the USPS. One was opened, everything was completely unwrapped then shoved back in the box (badly) and stamped 'Opened by the US Postal Servce'. The 2nd was opened and then sealed back up (apparently without unpacking it) and stamped. I was not charged postage due for the first one, but was for the second. Refused the second, returned the first. This is 2 out of (estimating) about 20 purchases that I have made that have been sent media, the rest have all sailed through. Not sure that 10% Failure Rate is worth the risk.

Accepted by CGC on 5/6 - so the pressing was a bit longer than the 70 day time frame at 74 ish.

There are two I would estimate just from the front cover scans that wouldn't top 9.0 (The ASM Annual 19 looks pretty rough and the Transformers 1 has enough spine ticks to knock it down a good bit.) The Secret Wars #8 could be a candidate - post that one over on the 'Can you Spare a Grade?' as someone suggested to get a good general idea on if it is worth pursuing.

Received Invoice from CCS today....am I counting 53 Business days? Not sure if they invoice when they are accepted to press or when press is completed.

Selling my comics since I was a kid need help.
Gravin replied to ComixGrl's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
The Droids #1 and the Sonic books have a bit of value - Depending on condition of course. -
First off I am one of those people that LOVES production errors...and my 'value' rule is that I can go up to 20% in price over the same book without the error. (and usually it is closer to 10%) To me, any more than that is crazy. (But, as was noted above, there isn't a set 'rule' and I know of others that are willing to pay more than that for certain errors and others that love them too, but only will collect the ones that they find in the wild and will never pay more for errors.) My personal advice about getting them graded: to me, the thing that makes double covers fun is the ability to open the book at see the second (or third) cover. Personally I wouldn't pay any more for a CGC 9.6 double cover X-men 166 than I would for a 9.6 standard copy. Raw copies though I would be willing to pay up a bit for.

Selling my comics since I was a kid need help.

It depends on what you mean by 'cool'. Loved that series and have most of that run set aside for my son to read - so yes, they are cool. Unfortunately, they are not monetarily valuable if that is what you are actually asking. -
significant increase of high graded SSOCs
Gravin replied to djmcslick's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Another possible explanation - someone uncovered a case of new/old stock at a warehouse and submitted the nice ones. It definitely does happen...never to ME, but it does happen. -
At some point someone will respond: "It is worth what someone will pay for it." Which is true...but not terribly helpful The following sites are solid starting points that you can check for free comicbookrealm.com comicspriceguide.com EBAY sold listings

Ashamed of my Collecting Origins
Gravin replied to poorcollector's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
I think it is pretty cool that when you got bored you didn't go out and buy a digital subscription (not that there is anything wrong with that) ...you went with paper. You give me hope for the future. -
Alot of eBay is timing - yes there are those of us that rabidly monitor saved searches for certain issues, but the majority of eBay buyers only log on now and then. My favorite story is my first eBay sale - it was some D&D second edition module (sorry, don't remember which one.) and I put it out as a BiN for $20...it went 2 months without selling, I put it up for auction and 4 different bidders went over my $20 original asking and the end price was $41. It is just a weird auction world...

First comic I ever owned, Marvel Team-Up 117, it had been pocket rolled multiple times (Though the cover is still miraculously attached.) There is a stain of what I believe is cheeto-dust (tm) on the back and has more spine ticks than my old cat after a 3 night outdoor bender but THAT is the copy that is in the top loader displayed among my other treasures. (While my 'pretty' copy holds down its place in the stacks of my MTU collection.)

So, what was the first CGC graded comic you purchased?
Gravin replied to nepatkm's topic in Comics General
I remember it like it was last month...because it was. I started posting on here because I was debating if I should submit a pile of books that I wanted to entomb for preservation and display reasons and after seeing so many photos I decided that I liked the look with the cases and finally sprung for my X94 (And just shipped off my first pile to CGC today as well.) -
Who here tried to collect runs of titles? (Completists)
Gravin replied to nepatkm's topic in Comics General
My What If...? that I am missing is 10 ...and now I don't think that I will stumble into that one any time soon. -

Gravin replied to nepatkm's topic in Comics General
Huge fan of runs (and full mini's) Probably because I like reading full story lines - so I don't think I'm really a completionist. I am working on the entire Uncanny Run - Short about 40 issues between 1 - 125 (Including 1-4) and maybe 75-80 issues after 350, but those should be a pretty easy pick up. I am currently focusing to complete my Marvel Team-Up run - Need about 35 issues and an upgrade of my 2.0ish #1 For New Mutants Vol1 I need about 10 more filler issues and am chasing a really high grade copy of the Graphic Novel Also accidentally started collecting the What If...? Vol1 when I realized that I had 29 of the first 30 (guess which one I don't have...) -
Where to find a good checklist?
Gravin replied to riddles500's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
I would suggest ComicBookRealm.com It is free to use, allows tracking of your 'pile' of comics and you can sort your collections into sub-sets and also give you the option of compiling a 'want list' and you can export the tables into something printable if you need. There is also an app available, but I don't think that is free. I am sure that there are other online options that will work as well. Either way, best of luck to your son in his collecting endeavors! -

Thanks all for helping talk me through this. I'll get some edge closeups this weekend and post ...because I am now insanely curious...
-
Okay - I purchased this as a part of a World's Finest lot on Ebay and I assumed that I was getting this issue missing a chunk of the cover, but as it turns out, it was not missing...exactly - the seller included the detached corner. My plans are to keep it for now as a filler in my collection, but should I acquire a better copy in the future I would most likely sell this one. With that in mind, do we believe it would be better from a resale standpoint to re-attach the corner with archival tape or to leave the piece separate? (Or would there even be a large enough difference to be concerned with.) Thanks!

Incredible Hulk 1 - 6 Advice Needed
Gravin replied to Green-One's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
I can't really give much advice other than I think that all 6 as a set would be an 'Incredible' display with the Hulk custom labels. -
Grading Submission and Pressing?
Gravin replied to Fireice989's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Nice book - I wonder how many of those have actually survived in the wild. I agree with the others, pressing should help it some
